Skip to comments.FYI: Outgoing Santorum votes AGAINST Gates (SecDef Nomination) (mocks 'talking' with Iran)

Overall, 52 Republicans, 42 Democrats and one independent voted for Gates. Three lawmakers _ Sens. Joseph Biden, D-Del., Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C. _ did not vote.
Two Bush allies, Sens. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and Jim Bunning, R-Ky., voted against Gates, citing his criticism of the war and his view that the U.S. should engage Iran as part of a solution.
"Mr. Gates has repeatedly criticized our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan without providing any viable solutions to the problems our troops currently face," Bunning said. "We need a secretary of defense to think forward with solutions and not backward on history we cannot change."
Santorum, who lost his re-election bid last month, mocked the idea of engaging dictators and talked at length of the evils of "radical Islamic fascism." When it comes to reaching out to Iran to discuss the security of Iraq, Santorum said of Gates, "I think he is in error."

Yes, even if Rick Santorum runs and loses in the primary it will be a precursor for the real run in '12 or '16.
You know I have a theory that McPain_in_the_poopa will lose in the primaries, will run as an Independent, and hand it to the RATS by knocking out the GOP candidate.
However, I still say that the primaries debates will show Rick to be a worthwhile candidate for the next time around.
I agree with that, right now.
I got to believe that intellectual honesty will not always incur the political death penalty, as it does now.
Rick's an odd duck, embracing SocSec reform in a state where it guaranteed him a loss, as its population is so dang old. Just another example of the man's honesty.
IMHO there will be a disaster coming inolving Gates as Sec. of Defense.
This is sadly true. But a primary run in order to keep the party at least somewhat attentive to life/border/security issues wouldn't be all bad.

I like your thinking!
Would New Jersey take NYC too.
No, you got me confused or I got you confused.
A total misunderstanding of the ME thought process:
Negotiator = weak -------> loser
Gates is a loser BEFORE he starts to negotiate. He's supposed to be the rock behind our troops. He comes in with a near-unanimous vote by pleasing everybody.
Last time I checked; you don't win ANY war by pleasing everybody. If everybody is pleased and even calling you victorious you must have lost BIG!
I agree. I just don't understand it.
Yep.... Philthydelphia does belong in NJ.
Then why don't you nudge him a li'l? LOL
This really good man should in all fairness be our next President.
Santorum For President!
Santorum was born in Winchester, VA. Pennsylvania may be drifting into the deep blue condition of the other Northeastern states. He might consider re-establishing a career in the state of his birth, which has not yet fully gone over to the dark side.
The difference between Chamberlain and the Democrats can be thus summarised - one could learn, the other will never learn.
Now why didn't I think of that?
Maybe I'll just give him a call and suggest it; what do you think? Or........I could make a trip to Pittsburgh and flat out tell him in person!!
Who knows, maybe I will!
Point well taken.
