Where did this BS come from? Based on past history dims should have picked up a hell of a lot more seats. Who exactly was predicting the Democrats were going to pick up more than 6 seats?

It's not a "who," it's history. During the campaigns some GOP wonks showed that historically the the mid-term election during a president's second term always resulted in big gains by the opposing party. Although they dims made gains, they were no where close to reaching historical gains.
That's different than saying dims wouldn't make enough gains to take over the House and Senate. In fact, if you look at the historical gains and losses over the past 20 years you would see that the GOP has steadily risen in a sort of two steps forward, one step back fashion.
