NEW YORK (AP) -- More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past.

Although I am sure it is high, I doubt 95%.
One could cadge a research grant and do a study on the remaining 5%.
"Although I am sure it is high, I doubt 95%."
My thought exactly.
Born in the 40's? Baby boomers!
Of course they got rid of hubby and the kids, got the dog-chewed-on-it short haircut and moved to Santa Fe where they quit having sex but claim to be 'very sexual beings'....
I think that's why the number is at 95%. Still counts as pre-marital sex.
My wife would be one, so we are at 50%. She still thinks I'm great.
Yeah! The baby-boomers were chaste as the wind-driven snow!
Maybe my family is a bunch of freaks, but both my parents, my sister, and I all fit into that 5%.
I don't buy it. I know several friends who abstained, as well.
But I seriously doubt the number of parnters was as high for those born in the 1940s as they are today...
First or second marriage? Heh heh heh...
First marriages may see lower numbers of premarital sex, but the second and third could be skewing this considerably.
It's like the divorce rate. First marriage failure rates are a lot lower than the overall marriage failure rate.
Thats it...because of this PROOF we must never again even suggest virginity and purity to kids or anyone for that matter...its now a dead issue. Everybody try on the shoe before marriage now, after all 95% of us did so...just ask these folks.
Not too long ago the homo's were trying to make you believe 10% of the US is gay, and that all females would soon have AIDS, cuz they were the fastest growing group.
Oh yeah, and McKinsey and his big survey...? They were taken using US PRISONERS as survey subjects....
I'm married, what is sex? :)
My second, her first. And you are right about the stats. I remember hearing Paul Harvey talking about the divorce rate. He said it was 50% or so. But he went on to say that with some people having 2, 3, 4, and some more marriages, the real stat is that 75% of marriages actually survive.
Figures lie and liars figure.
The study itself is at:
Good for you!
Same here, my parents, my three siblings and myself are part of the 5 percent.
Coincidentallly...or maybe not...the length of our marriages to date are: 57 years (parents)...siblings and myself: 32 years, 26 years, 26 years, and 24 years.
And the other 5% lied about it.
For the proposes of this study, "vaginal sexual intercourse".
I wonder if that was a "heterosexual pre-marital sex" survey or what?
If we don't include the 10% gay population, does that bring the 95% down to 85%?
What a bunch of crap....probably a taxpayer-funded study, too.....
One could cadge a research grant and do a study on the remaining 5%.
Some folks are just dog ugly
I wonder how the divorce rate of the 5% compares to the rest. I know the couples who don't live together before marriage do much better than those that do.
Maybe the respondents were confused and thought the poll takers meant 'test driving cars'. Or, the respondents were thinking manual manipulation of their own genitalia.
I was born in the late 30's. In college in the Middle West many of us lost our virginity or were sexually active. On the whole though it was not the first date, and not unless we thought we would continue to date the person. Not like "hooking-up", although as one accumulated several years of experience and friends, it might become "friends with benefits". In high school in the East it was not as common, although some girls from working class families had a "reputation." One 15 year old college track girl got pregnant by her steady boyfriend. It was a bit of a scandal
My mother was in college in the late 20's. She and her friends used to go from New Jersey to "speak easies" in New York City in the Village. I doubt she was a virgin when she met my father.
I don't know...it was culturally OK for women to like men back then. Things are tougher, now. ;)
Then I really have to call BS. (I'd highly doubt it even if it included oral.) I'm definitely going to read this thing and see how they went about their research.
I wonder if they considered "rape" as sex before marriage.
According to numbers I've heard (perhaps, their own), up to 25 % of women have been raped.
Actually some of us were and some of our children are. Shock of all shocks!
If this was figured "per capita" it might be my fault.
God forgive me, I once was lost.
I believe it. I don't know a single virgin before they were married.
LOL! So true...
And of all the people getting divorced, HALF of them are women. Whooda thunk it?
95% huh, is that with or without a partner.
That'd be me.
Just celebrated our 20th.
Since some are using length of marriage as a criteria in favor of being part of the 5%, I should add that my marriage of 44 years ended with the death of my husband, and my parents were married around 50 years.
If you read this thread, you'll see that some people don't have pre-marital sex.
I find it hard to believe that you've never met anyone who was a virgin before they were married. I grew up in a politically and socially mixed community, and I knew lots of people who did not have pre-marital sex.
You can include gradeschool nowdays.
This country is going to hell in a hurry...
But then again, I wouldn't be pursuing a particular agenda via my research.
Oh, I am sure they have a divorce rate that is bad too considerng the day and age, but I am willing to bet it is better than average by a mile. I do not trust this "poll" either. I don't think I would trust a Poll on the issue. The best way to measure is that of marriages lasting 50+ and then you may have a good measure. After all, they at least are most likely 1st marriages and by their years may have held the higher standard.
I just hope example and teaching will yeild that standard for my children. I neither trust in man or self but God for this. I do not give up hope either.
I know the couples who don't live together before marriage do much better..."
Lived with my husband almost two years before marriage. Married for 44 years. My son lived with his wife for 4 or 5 years before they married. Now together more than 10 years.
Says who, do you think everyone will admit they had sex before being married. Unless you were hancuffed to them you realy don't know.
It always seemed to me that this kind of "study" is as much a waste of time as it is meaningless. Who knows what the figure is? Who cares? We do or should know that many of the people answering the big question have one lying agenda or another.
Perhaps a worthy study might involve whether yes or no furthers the human condition. Even that would require an existential yard stick of meter length.
Does the definition of sex include necking as well as intercourse.
