Pelosi's 100-hour agenda includes popular measures but no dramatic action on the war in Iraq.
WASHINGTON When Democrats take power on Capitol Hill this week, House leaders will kick off their legislative campaign with a lightning-fast 100-hour agenda.
MP>But there won't be a revolution.
In marked contrast to the Republicans who swept into the majority in 1994, incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her legislative allies are not planning to amend the Constitution or eradicate federal agencies.
Instead, their initial legislative foray will focus on modest, politically popular issues, including initiatives to expand stem cell research, lower prescription drug prices and tighten congressional ethics rules.
Pelosi's program is expected to receive a warm reception on Capitol Hill, even from some Republicans. Less clear is whether Democrats can follow up with solutions to the deeper problems that are troubling a restive public.

The Democrats - Lowering expectations for the Masses...
I would hardly call shutting down conservative free speech "modest".
What, in the first 100 hours?
I suppose they'd like a "thank you?"
No surprise. I expect the House Democrats to be relatively quiet for the next two years. How quiet is going to depend on how well Rep's Hoyer and Pelosi are able to keep their colleagues in line. They know that the major obstacle our party faces in winning future elections is the perception that the Democratic party is composed primarily of radical socialist moonbats.
The focus afterall is on 2008.
I see Bush vetoing two of the three mentioned. He definately has not changed his mind on embryonic stem cells. Drug prices should be a non starter with the market really starting to work nicely.
One of the problems the Dims have with free speech is that, while they find it and the truths it engenders taxing, it can't be taxed.
Despite the rhetoric and bluster they are now dealing with reality, somewhere they haven't been for a long time.
The far left base will melt down quickly when they realize their heroes can't or won't impeach the President , or pull out of Iraq by Thursday, or imeach the President, or impose universal healthcare, or impeach the President, or raise taxes, or impeach the President...
One thing I appreciate though, is with demoncrats in office, I have acquired the title of "wealthy". Although it is a hollow honor because as far as they are concerned, anyone not on welfare is "wealthy".
Correct. Rats don't mind the speech part much, its the free part that bothers them.
LOL! The SS system is so imperiled that its current surplus was over $172 billion last year, up from only $156 billion the year before. I'm constantly amazed when Republican Party propoganda finds it way into a news story, even one appearing in the LA Times.
Repukie propoganda finding its way into the LAT is even worse than the lies appearing on Fox News, ABC, and WND. There, I expect a consistent Repbulican bias. A certain amount of objectivity and respect for truth are expected from the LAT.
Yes, that is an excellent point. This was sold as a "retirement" scheme but it has been "pay as you go" and then some.
It is actually an income transfer from the young and highly productive to the old and less productive. One can debate its wisdom at its inception but people have planned their lives around it. Face the music. It is transfer and Congress has worded such they get the additional dollars you pointed out for whatever will buy them more votes.
good post.
