Van Hollen Promises Crime-Fighting Blitz (New WI Attorney General)

In his inaugural speech, incoming Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen promised a 100-day blitz to fight crime in Wisconsin.

Van Hollen, the state's top-ranking Republican and a likely gubernatorial candidate in 2010, called upon Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle and a politically split Legislature to support his agenda, which calls for:

• Restoring public faith in government and elections.

• Reducing the backlog in cases at the State Crime Lab. The backlogs were a major issue in last fall's election, and Doyle has promised to work with Van Hollen to find increased funding for the lab.

• Fighting violent crime in Milwaukee, which Van Hollen said "must not be permitted to rob the freedom of families to feel safe on the streets of their own neighborhoods."

• Combating methamphetamine abuse, which he described as "the most dangerous drug law enforcement has encountered."

• Tracking down Internet sex predators who target juveniles.

Van Hollen narrowly defeated Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, the Democratic nominee, in the tightest race of this fall's elections.

Van Hollen said his victory "was an example of bipartisan support based upon my extensive experience in law enforcement," and pledged to work in a bipartisan fashion with Doyle and state lawmakers.

"The safety of our families should not become victim to politics as usual. Our first question as elected officials should be what is the right course of action - not if an idea was the product of a Republican or a Democrat," he said.

I have to take exception to this statement, as it sounds like a liberal said it (Dianne Feinstein said something similar once):

- Fighting violent crime in Milwaukee, which Van Hollen said "must not be permitted to rob the freedom of families to feel safe on the streets of their own neighborhoods."

To heck with feeling safe, people need to BE safe.

He should start by investigating Diamond Jim's criminal misconduct in the 2002 Gubernatorial election.

I know you are just tickled, BUT - the Attorney General is the top lawyer for the state, not the law enforncement officer.

I know. I'm just pleased to have our ex-sot Peg "The Keg" Lautenschlager out of that position, and that Kathleen Falk was defeated. (Both Democrats.)

If JB does ONE thing towards cleaning up crime, it'll be a vast improvement. :)
