That's only true if you avoid politics. If you talk politics with a liberal, they will never, ever forgive you for being conservative.
I easily forgive them for being liberal, so I don't get it, but that's the way it is.
Do you think that is because for them often it becomes their religion and is therefore the most important thing in their world and they are so convinced that this is the only way.
