Geneolgy is quite addictive. Unlike drugs, it seems to be a healthy addiction...........

Yeah, it IS an addiction! My computer desk is covered with 'stuff', and I have boxes of papers that need to be organized. (My February project - I keep telling myself!) LOL!! I have the Family TreeMaker Program (a gift from my husband), that I have to start entering my data into.

Can anyone recommend a good, basic guidebook or website to get a novice started?

Start with yourself. Then start gathering information about your parents and siblings: Birth dates/places, marriages, children, etc. Then grandparents.

It's easy - and addictive! I use these websites:

Rootsweb (It's free): http://www.rootsweb.com/
I use the surname lists to find anybody else researching my names.

US Genweb (Free): http://www.usgenweb.org/
Scroll down and click on the state you want to ressearch in. You can also jump to "WorldGenweb" from there.

Ellis Island Website (free to search, but you have to order copies of the manifest, though there are "ways" to make copies if you know how to go about it!) http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/

Family Search (The mormon website) I've had some luck here.
The website is free, and basic information:
http://www.familysearch.org/

Ancestry.com (membership fee required). It's a bit pricey, but I use it a lot! I have the US census and access to the Newspaper archives. Lots of other stuff included. You can choose which package you want:
http://www.ancestry.com/

That should get you started on the web, but be aware that not all information submitted to these sites is accurate. I try to get my information from original sources as much as possible.

Thanks! You have now given me a reason to spend more time on line. Keep your location a guarded secret, my family does have access to this computer and I can not guarantee your safety.

Deflowered in May perhaps?

Between 1890 and 1914 an estimated 125,000 Britons emigrated every year to the United States, with 50,000 going to Canada and 25,000 to Australia.

My grandfather, who died at age 96 in 1981, immigrated to Canada in 1905.
Quebec City was his port of entry.
