The weather channel barely mentioned it.

yes, I understand that, but I was quoting NOAA's prediction/time frame for waves action in Hawaii, should they begin there.

The local news channel (KTVU-SF/CA) just noted that "Japan's Meteorlogical Agency has noted a change in sea level has been observed" and "residents on Kuril Islands are being urged to move to higher ground".

There wasn't anything more than that and the typical "Stay tuned".

There are several reports on the magnitude, most recently 7.6-7.7. The location is deep sea off the Kuril Islands. At this time no reports of any serious tsunami in the local areas. We'll have to wait and see.

Hope your son packed warm jammies......it's cool in Kaumana.

Only seconds ago USGS revised their magnitude upward to 8.2 (from the old one of 7.9)

So now the USGS and NOAA estimates are both 8.2

Report on yahoo saying tidal levels had fallen 4 inches in Nemuro, Japan, a sign of a possible tsunami.

Thing to remember about Tsunamis is they don't spread equally in all directions - you basically get two "beams" extending perpendicular to the fault...

Which is why the Tsunami from the last Kuril quake was higher in Crescent City CA than it was in Japan.

Truly remarkable to have a couplet of 8+ mag quakes so close to each other in time and space.

Anchorage is basically invulnerable to tsuamis. There was no Tsunami damage in Anchorage from the second largest quake ever recorded in 1964 that was just offshore, one that caused a massive tsunami in other areas of Alaska.

that's ok, I have two cousins who work for NOAA - one in Hawaii handling this stuff, and another with earthquakes. They keep me straight too.
