Good luck Guam. One of the things that worried me when I worked in the Navy is whether a tsunami could suck out the caison of a drydock. I hope the people of Guam remain safe and the Naval Base there suffers no damages.

OK, well said then. I agree that tide stations are for scientists to determine the probable effects, not for casual observers and so we shouldn't be trying to get too much information out of that data without being properly trained.

Thank God looks like it is over.

Like I was saying the nature of the wave propagation likely did not send the highest waves to the western Aleutians or to Northeast Japan - those locations are parallel to the generating fault and it's possible waves may be higher in locations perpendicular to the fault.

One tidbit for the many people that enjoy seeing scientists get egg on their faces...

This portion of the Kuril Trench where these two great earthquakes in November and then tonight occured was SPECIFICALLY singled out by a paper in Science in 2003 as an area where due to the nature of the geology of the trench in that area, it could not generate large earthquakes.

http://www.gps.caltech.edu/~simons/pdfs/21_song_simons_combined.pdf

They even made a specific "negative" prediction that such quakes would never occur there, in 2004.

It's Bush's fault.

By not signing the Kyoto treaty and sending more troops to kill terrorists in Iraq, he is making the earthquake gods angry and they are lashing out in fury.

If only Pelosi or Hillary were president, then the earth would be at peace"

That would likely be the "Peace of the Grave", would it not ????
