Minimum-wage bill to cover U.S. Samoa
San Diego U/T ^ | 01/14/06 | ap

Posted on 01/14/2007 9:06:45 AM PST by RS

"House Democrats say a just-passed minimum-wage bill will be changed to cover all U.S. territories – including American Samoa – "

"Spokesmen for Pelosi and Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, the author of the minimum-wage bill, said it excluded American Samoa at the request of nonvoting Delegate Eni Faleomavaega, a Democrat who represents the Pacific island territories in the House.

Raising the federal minimum wage would devastate the local tuna industry, Faleomavaega said in a statement last week, adding that American Samoa's economy is “more than 80 percent” dependent on Chicken of the Sea and StarKist."

Prepare for an increase in the price of canned tuna. I'm sure the environmentalists will approve, though.

Nancy Pelosi targets WIC,(women,infants,and children).

What food benefits do WIC participants receive?WIC foods include iron-fortified infant formula and infant cereal, iron-fortified adult cereal, vitamin C-rich fruit and/or vegetable juice, eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, dried beans or peas, tuna fish and carrots.

pelosi and the dems going after moms and babies, how mean spirited;)

It just means a bigger subsidy for Pelosi's constituents. That's probably why she has no problem increasing the min. wage in Samoa. She knows the government is picking up the tab anyway.

Hey, Faleomavaega should understand...this is what Democrats
and their fellow-travelers in PETA want to happen.

Damage the tuna industry as retribution for those dead dolphins.
And turn more people into vegans.

Funny how even some Democrats fail to get/read the memos about
their party's REAL objectives.

To paraphrase Hillary!'s preaching to the healthcare field:
"It's not our fault that Sea Kist built their business on a culture
of animal abuse!"

WOW.

In reality, it means both canneries are going to shut down..

Hmmm, since I have lawsuits against both, maybe this means they will settle..

Is Samoa excluded or not? This article is shamefully written.

This is a victory for Republicans. Unemployment in somoa will make the effects of the minimum wage obvious.

The next step should be to force the wage increase to go into effect before the next election, so it becomes obvious who's responsible.

The Democrats have just destroyed the economy of American Samoa.

And that was just during the first 100 hours. Think what they can do in the next two years.

No, it illustrates how the MSM is easily conflicted when faced with the unvarnished facts of economics. In this case, the denial vector (it is more a tensor, to translate reality to liberalthink) got pointed at protecting supporters of the minimum wage rather than spinning plausable denial about the Samoan cannery jobs.

This makes it even more interesting -

Originally it was to cover ALL the Pacific island territories EXCEPT Samoa - Why ? Starkist Hedquarters is in Pelosi's district !

It’s a travesty that hundreds of employees of a thriving business in a far off land will probably lose their jobs, devastating the local tuna industry, because of Democrats elected through no fault of their own or even the right to vote. I can't think of a more cruel example of taxation without representation. The depraved dominatrix, Mistress Nancy, has drawn first blood with her whip.

The employees of Chicken of the Sea and StarKist should have the right to declare their home Not-American Samoa during the next two years rather than suffer the unjust economic tyranny of socialist Democrats in the U.S.

I'm not sure the Republicans in Congress expected things to go this far. I think they expected to get some publicity that would allow the bill to die quietly in conference committee.

Instead, the Democrats call that bluff by showing how dedicated they are to legislation that "feels good" instead of doing the right thing. As if any further proof were needed that these people are concerned only with consolidating and expanding their own power. Hugo and Fidel must be proud.

82 Republicans (40% of the GOP caucus) voted for the bill. It goes to show you that nearly half of the GOP in the House are socialists just like the Dems.

Don't get me wrong, I am not defending RINO's, but the problem with the minimum wage is that the average american is just too stupid to understand why it is a problem, so I am not surprised that if it was going to pass anyway a lot of GOP congressmen voted for it.

I disagree. The real problem is that conservatives in the GOP do a pitiful job educating the American people on their views. With 12 years of GOP control they should have been able to demonstrate to the average American that government mandated wage rates are wrong.

What the GOP should have done over the last 12 years was introduce legislation to abolish the minimum wage altogether. The debate should not be whether it needs to be raised or not, but whether or not it should exist at all.

Wrecking the economy through ill advised policies is a victory to nobody.

There's probably a little bit more going on here than meets the eye. The minimum wage for the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands was hiked in the original bill. The CNMI is traditionally a Republican area, while American Samoa has traditionally been represented by Democrats. The Democrats seem intent on conforming the CNMI labor and perhaps other laws to U.S. laws due to abuses in their dying garment industry. American Samoa also has been allowed to make its own laws in some areas. By requiring the Democrats to make anything that they want to change in the CNMI also apply to American Samoa, it might make the Democrats think twice about whether the changes really need to be made. The Democrats are on notice that further wrecking the economy of the CNMI will come at a price - unfortunately, potentially harming American Samoa.
