Your picture of the ducks reminds me of the story of a male coworker who bought ducklings in the spring and raised them on his pond all summer as meat birds. After shooting and eating the first one at Thanksgiving, he decided to buy a dock de-icer for them, to keep them comfortable all winter. He will likely start naming them soon. (:

I've been around long enough for My Humans to know
That I like to be fed before they get up and go
About their business which I do not fully understand

Though they must love it, for the perks I enjoy are grand
Which is why I have already sat upon The Big One's chest and looked him in the eye
And have taken my place in the Kitchen waiting for him to comply

If someone doesn't show up soon I may begin to loudly question "Why?"
For I am a benevolent ruler and really do not wish to complain
Nor take over the world like "Pinky And The Brain"

Yet, in my little corner of it there are responsibilities countless and unseen
Which is why it's most important to get your Humans used to a routine
Over time, My Big and Pretty Ones and I have developed a form of communication

That is so sublimely clever that it barely requires translation
Another perk of ruling with an iron fist inside a velvet paw
Smoothly executed, so that even the Little Ones watching cannot see a flaw

Kind words plus rubs under my chin that slide slowly up around my head
Means that I play with the Little Ones throughout the day and times they're fed
And will stand guard after My Big One carries My Pretty One off to bed
