Sen. Hillary Clinton declared this weekend, " I'm in to win." Anyone who has watched her remarkable trajectory can have no doubt that she'll do whatever it takes to win the presidency. I wish she felt the same way about the war.
In fairness, Clinton, with her proposal for arbitrary caps on troop levels and hemming and hawing about her vote for the war resolution, has company on both sides of the aisle. Sen. Joseph Lieberman is the only national Democrat showing any courage on this issue. We Republicans -- with help from senators such as Chuck Hagel -- seem ready to race the Democrats to the bottom
I'd like to ask the politicians in both parties who are heading for the hills to stop and reflect on these basic facts:
· We are at war. America faces an existential threat. This is not, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi has claimed, a "situation to be solved." It would be nice if we could wake up tomorrow and say, as Sen. Barack Obama suggested at a Jan. 11 hearing, "Enough is enough." Wishing doesn't make it so. We will have to fight these terrorists to the death somewhere, sometime. We can't negotiate with them or "solve" their jihad. If we quit in Iraq now, we must get ready for a harder, longer, more deadly struggle later.
· Quitting helps the terrorists. Few politicians want to be known as spokesmen for retreat. Instead we hear such words as "redeployment," "drawdown" or "troop cap." Let's be clear: If we restrict the ability of our troops to fight and win this war, we help the terrorists. Don't take my word for it. And what would that be, exactly?
And by "this war," do you simply mean the Iraq War (define "win" precisely, please ...), or do you mean the larger war between militant Islam and all its rivals?
Mrs. Dole is suggesting that she might not seek reelection in North Carolina.
Mrs. Cheney is considerably sharper, imo, but Mrs. Dole has a better haircut.
I agree!!
I also think that the Cheney Couple is THE single most outstanding team in town!! Hats off to Vice President Dick and Lynn Cheney!!!
:-)
I always liked Cheney. He sounds like he could chew Democrats and liberals up into little pieces and spit them out.
I don't approve of her lifestyle, but that's between her and God. He's not responsible for what she does.
That's the other daughter.
I still say Dick Cheney is the only candidate who can beat Clinton in 2008!
And Cheney is the most qualified for the job.
I know, I know...Cheney has repeatedly said he is not a candidate but people do change their minds.
Cheney/Steele in 2008
Has a nice ring to it; don't you think?
She certainly would be better then either of my senators here in Florida.
But then mickey mouse would probably be better.
MOre than his age - his heart.
yep...when you're right...you're right...
but I sure as hell wish he would run!!!
I don't see anyone else out there better.
We need to continue to defeat them.
If we pull out we will have only allowed them to define the terms, and understand that we can't handle conflict over the long haul.
President Bush has always stated that it would be a long conflict, unlike anything we have ever seen.
What's your take?
I agree that pulling out is the wrong course.
However, to "win," we need to define "win." If "winning" means eliminating Al-Qaeda, then we need a plan to do that, and a means of determining when it's been done. If it means to have established a peaceful government in Iraq, then we need to backtrack, hold new elections, because right now we're supporting a Shi'ite Islamist government.
I hope President Bush has a good plan! I think, though, that it's a complicated situation, and we need to determine our objectives carefully and then insist on achieving them.
I am trying to remember who was in Iraq to help set up the Iraqi Government. (Paul?...) He worked with the State Department, and left about a year ago. Of all the people that we have heard from, he had the best grasp of the situation.
I wish he was there now.
Duncam Hunter - the dark horse the media wants America to ignore.
That's who it was.
Morning!
Good morning! How are you?
Saw the SOTIU last night. I thought for the most part it was good.
And you?
Did you see the speech?
No, we watched "Antiques Roadshow"!
