It must have cancelled spelling, too.

Yep--they close both.

Most schools around here (NE PA) are closed. Temps were around zero at the start of the school day. They claim they close schools because of the difficulty of heating them, but I know it's all about liability.

Do you folks have this no-school-today-because-its-too-cold?

That's a good question. Let me find out for you.

"Honey, a fellow Freeper wants to know if we are closing our school today because of the cold!"

"What's that! I can't here you over the kids. They've got the Abeka DVD program too loud!"

"Oh, O.K."

"She said yes, we are open today. Then she called me an idiot."

Livonia's haven't closed either. Why, oh why, didn't I move to the Plymouth/Livonia area? LOL

In my 13 years of public school in Nova Scotia, school was closed because of extreme cold once, when the high for the day, including wind chill, was -50°. Now, of course, out on the prairies, or in northern Quebec or Ontario temperatures close to that without the windchill are not so unusual, but then people who live there are equipped for and used to dealing with it. In NS -20° was an extreme cold snap.

Schools were regularly closed for snow, however, where I lived out in Halifax County - maybe 2 to 4 times a winter. Most kids were bussed to most schools and I guess they didn't want to take the chance of running the busses in bad conditions.

Myself, I was thinking that here in Indy they were using it as an excuse for a late start because of the Colts' win! LOL!

The two-hour delay is because Hobbit Lass got her birthday wish. With a two-hour delay, she got to sleep in and yet doesn't have to make up for a lost day at the end of the year. ;^)

Now, tell the truth - our schools close when it rains too hard.

I remember my older sisters walking to school in Detroit after we had gotten close to a foot of snow. (at least it seemed that much to me!) They got to school, were told it was closed, walked home, and were told on the radio, that the schools were open! This was years ago, of course, before Detroit had any buses and no one had to walk more than a mile to school.

My weather memory was trying to walk to school with sidewalks that were sheets of ice. I made it all the way to school without falling, over half a mile, only to slip on the front walk of the school.

"They canceled last night."

It must be a real downer missing the entire evening due to cancellation. BTW, Indy won the Super Bowl.

I'm not sure if it's a law here in Ohio, but our district's policy is to close if it is -5 or less windchill.

We also closed Thur. and Friday for illness, in Marion County. We had two days off before Christmas for the same reason.

My daughter has now had as many school closings in four months in Tennessee than she had in 7 years in Colorado.

Indy schools closed Due to SUPERBOWL

Well for IPS, technically, it was because too many bus drivers called in sick...from celebrating the Superbowl. LOL.

Us too, my kids have never had a snow day in their lives. Except last week when my wife took them sledding a noon on a Tuesday. Made the kids in the government school next to the sledding hill pretty jealous.

My daughter had to actually buy a new coat because her school locker is too small for her heavy winter coat.

Yup. Same thing here. We live in Central Wisconsin & my son's locker is too small for his winter jacket and we're not talking about a down parka, either. It's a Columbia with Thinsulate.

Schools up here in the northern panhandle of WV are closed today. Damn global warming!!!

Our schools allow for so many snow days of which we had none so far. I think since it was a weekend many busses probably had freezeups.

No, but when it is -10°F or colder, they don't let them play outside for recess.
