U.S. Attorney Letter To Bloomberg A Significant Victory, Says SAF

NEWS RELEASE

U.S. ATTORNEY LETTER TO BLOOMBERG ‘A SIGNIFICANT VICTORY,’ SAYS SAF

BELLEVUE, WA – A letter to the office of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg from the U.S. Department of Justice scolding the mayor’s infamous 2006 gun sting operation and advising that Bloomberg’s administration could face “potential legal liabilities” over such stings was called a “significant victory” against the Big Apple mayor’s anti-gun antics by the Second Amendment Foundation.

Earlier this week, SAF was advised by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) that the agency is investigating Bloomberg’s multi-state sting operation “in order to determine if violations of Federal firearms laws have occurred.”

“This new development,” said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb, “adds insult to injury for Bloomberg. We were adamant early on that this vigilante attack on gun dealers by Bloomberg and his posse of private investigators went way beyond his legal authority. Now it appears the Justice Department believes likewise.”

The New York Daily News reported Thursday that Michael Battle, director of the executive office for United States Attorneys at the Department of Justice, sent the letter warning Bloomberg’s administration that it could face “potential legal liabilities” if such sting operations continue. Battle also said the Justice Department will not be filing criminal charges against any of the 15 gun dealers targeted by Bloomberg’s 2006 lawsuits over alleged “straw man” purchases. Such operations lack “proper law enforcement authority,” Battle’s letter stated.

“Bloomberg’s house of cards is starting to crumble,” Gottlieb stated. “This underscores why SAF called upon Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to investigate Bloomberg’s rogue operation last August, and why we were delighted to learn earlier this week that ATF is conducting a thorough investigation of this enterprise.

“It is both sad and revealing,” Gottlieb added, “that more than 150 mayors around the country have been drawn into Bloomberg’s folly by joining his anti-gun mayors’ coalition. That group’s launching pad was this bogus gun sting, which is now imploding. Every one of these city leaders is now linked to this misadventure. These mayors let their anti-gun bias, rather than good sense, lull them into joining and supporting what is becoming a colossal blunder, and now might be a good time to reconsider that participation.”

IIRC, two of these gun dealers settled with Bloomberg and are allowing some kind of inspection or oversight of their operations. They should tell Bloomberg to go screw himself and refuse to cooperate with any further inspections. And then sue his sorry ass.

Bloomberg should be prosecuted criminally for this stunt, but since he's one of the "People Who Matter", there will be no consequences for him. Maybe one of his "investigative agents" will be thrown under the bus, but even that's not real likely.

The headline, tho word for word, is really misleading. It sounds like Bloomburg got an attaboy from the justice department or SAF.

Not your fault, Ed. You did well.

Bloomberg and his little private army of Gestapo investigators should all be in Federal custody - NOW. If we did what Bloomie did, we'd get more than a nasty letter, that's for sure.

Wow, what a concept. The Constitution finally being followed.

Government protects its own turf. If anyone is going to be running spurious sting programs on otherwise lawful businesses, it's gonna be the Feds, and ONLY the Feds.

Amazing, isn't it?

Every one of those 15 gun dealers ought to sue Bloomberg and his little band of thugs. I'd love to see some jail time thrown in as well, but I doubt that will happen.

Perhaps. However, I wonder how many people actually consider him to be one of the 'People Who Matter.' Maybe there are a few folks in high places who'd be willing to throw him under the bus as well.

What we need to do is flood the DOJ with letters demanding that Bloomberg and every one of his minions be prosecuted. I'll be working on my letter this weekend.

Exactly. Bloomberg and his investigators need to be prosecuted for making straw purchases.

There's an article in the NY Sun today: Despite DOJ Decision, Gun Cases Will Go Forward. I don't remember if we can link or post content from the NY Sun, but you can access the article's link via the NRA-ILA's website: www.nraila.org/News/Read/InTheNews.aspx?ID=8886.

You bet. That's been one of my b*tches since day one.

And that's on the Federal level. Undoubtedly they broke countless state and local laws too with these illegal straw purchases.

They need to sue that Socialist pig! People who think you should do something because 'they want it their way,' make me sick. I'm glad they are going after him, and I hope the gun dealers who have been harmed because of him, sue him too. This is definitely good news! :o)

Is there a compiled list of those mayors who have joined Bloomberg's little cabal? It might be a fitting touch for Freeper's that are under the specter of these mayors to do a little 'informational mailing' of this to make sure they are current on the events.

Thanks to the NRA-ILA, yes there is:

Source: NRA-ILA Grassroots Alert Vol. 14, No. 5 02/02/07

MORE TOOLS TO COMBAT ANTI-GUN MAYORS

In recent issues of the Grassroots Alert, we have been documenting anti-gun New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's coalition efforts to impose New York City-style gun laws across the nation. In addition to compiling an updated listing of the mayors that sign on to Bloomberg's efforts, NRA-ILA has added a new tool for you to fight against this blatantly anti-gun coalition.

By visiting www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=2533 not only will you find the list of mayors who are cahoots with Bloomberg, but also some sample letters for you to send to your mayor. One letter urges those mayors who have joined the anti-gun coalition, to remove themselves. The other sample letter encourages those mayors who have so far resisted pressure to join, to remain resolute. In addition to the sample letters, we have also posted a link to our "Tips for Communicating with Your Elected Officials" page that will provide you additional guidance when contacting your mayors.

Please visit www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=2533 today to take action yourself, and share this link with your family, friends, and fellow firearm owners and encourage them to do the same!

NRA-ILA Action Alerts are archived here: www.nraila.org/GrassrootsAlerts/read.aspx. You can also sign up on the NRA-ILA web site to have Action Alerts emailed to you.

Indeed. If I had enough money, I'd hire attorneys for all of the shops affected by Bloomberg's bogus suits.

Agreed. However, the fact that he is being investigated and the information is being made public puts it in Bloomberg's face. He s@*t all over the law abiding citizens who owned and operated these shops and I want his damn nose rubbed in it. Ditto for his so-called investigators.

Bloomberg is a coward and an enemy of the Constitution.

Let's hope it turns out that he already has. He and his investigators broke federal law by planning and then actually making straw purchases. If there's any justice, he'll be prosecuted.
