Would Thomas Jefferson have been more ethical to have children by someone else's slave?
Actually, the "proof" that Jefferson had children by one of his slaves is oral tradition among some of the descendants of Sally Hemings. (Her son Madison Hemings was claiming to be a son of TJ in 1870--on the US census that year the census taker wrote "This man is the son of Thomas Jefferson" on the line with his name.)
There was a lot of hype in 1998 about a DNA study that showed that descendants of one of Sally's sons had a distinctive Jefferson Y-chromosome marker, but that could have been inherited from Jefferson's brother or a number of other relatives who lived reasonably close to Monticello. The reason for saying that Thomas Jefferson rather than another Jefferson was the father is the oral tradition.

B. Hussein Obama
Between that and "Wingnut" I have all the ammo I need. This is better than Teddy the Swimmer calling him Osama Obama.

Since Obama's father was a moslem there is not way I'd ever vote for him. Prejudiced? Politically incorrect? Probably yes but I have the right to be that way. You abosolutely have the right to be that way. It does prove this country has a long way to go to meet its ideals. Someday, maybe people will be judged for themselves and not their ancestry.

His ancestry is questionable. Up until 9/11 I could have cared less about the fact that his family is moslem but not after everything I've learned about islam. Plus, he's a democrat.

Thanks for the ping, PS.
Maybe liberals aren't secret racists expunging vast stores of white guilt by hyperventilating over B. Hussein Obama. Maybe they're just running out of greeting card inscriptions.
Let me know if you'd like to be added to the Ann Coulter ping list.

My point is that being related to someone involved in the slave trade does not make one evil. Being the owner of slave may not make you evil either. I mention Jefferson because he carried on a relationship with a slave as opposed to "forcing" himself on one.
As evidenced by the variations in color of african-americans, then and now, there was some mixing between owners and slaves.
Are we individually judged by the actions of our fore-bearers?

By your own statement, you could never vote for him just on the basis of his ancestry. Oppose him because of his ideas, plans, past actions, and party affiliations. Don't do it because of genetics.

No one gets to pick his or her ancestors, so they shouldn't be considered guilty of things their ancestors may have done wrong. Of course in this country all whites are guilty because they are white, whether or not they had ancestors here before slavery was abolished, let alone whether they are descended from any slaveowner.
There was definitely a lot of mixing--the census in the 19th century listed individuals as "mulatto" if they seemed to be or were known to be of mixed race. Some important "black" Americans like Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington had white fathers. Douglass recalls being referred to as "yellow" because of his lighter complexion.
It may be true that Jefferson slept with slaves, or at least with one slave (Sally Hemings, his deceased wife's half-sister), but it still really depends on the family tradition of Sally's descendants that that happened.

Not to worry...it's easy to forget which ping lists you've asked to be on.
I work late, so I'm not home when the new AC column is posted. It's usually up for hours before I have a chance to do the ping. :)

"What is so audacious about announcing that you're running for president? Any idiot can run for president. Dennis Kucinich is running for president. Until he was imprisoned, Lyndon LaRouche used to run for president constantly. John Kerry ran for president. Today, all you have to do is suggest a date by which U.S. forces in Iraq should surrender, and you're officially a Democratic candidate for president." PWN3D!
