Ron Paul, the Real Republican?
Tuesday, February 20, 2007
By Radley Balko
When you read about a vote in Congress that goes something like 412-1, odds are pretty good that the sole "nay" came from Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. He so consistently votes against widely popular bills, in fact, that the Washington Post recently gave him the moniker "Congressman 'No.'"
Paul isn't a reflexive contrarian--he doesn't oppose just to oppose. Rather, he has a core set of principles that guide him. They happen to be the same principles envisioned by the framers of the U.S. Constitution: limited government, federalism, free trade and commerce -- with a premium on peace.
When most members of Congress see a bill for the first time, they immediately judge the bill on its merits, or if you're more cynical, they determine what the political interests that support them will think of it, or how it might benefit their constituents.
For Paul, the vast majority of bills don't get that far. He first asks, "Does the Constitution authorize Congress to pass this law?" Most of the time, the answer to that question is "no." And so Paul votes accordingly.
This hasn't won him many friends in Congress, or, for that matter, his own party. It hasn't won him influential committee assignments or powerful chairmanships, either. Those are generally handed out to the party animals who vote as they're told. An incorruptible man of principle in a corrupt body almost utterly devoid of principle, Paul is often a caucus of one.
Paul recently announced his intentions to run for president in 2008. For the few of us who still care about limited government, individual rights, and a sensible foreign policy, Paul's candidacy is terrific news....Continue reading

So you SUPPORT spending hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of American Lives to provide military and financial support to a Government dominated by convicted Islamic Terrorists who attacked our Embassies and murdered hundreds of United States Marines in cold blood.
I'm glad we cleared that up.
"Ron Paul would get us killed."
And every Jew in Israel.
And every Kurd in Iraq.
And anyone else who ever put their trust in the USA.
He's advocacy of cut-and-run in Lebanon (he's part of the cabal that pressured Reagan to retreat) is still causing the death of Christians there, as the Islamists take over.
(1) I have no idea what their stand on Kosovo was or is. I know exactly what Ron Paul's stand is.
(2) Hannity and Rush are just entertainers - Ron Paul is a Congressman. He actually has power to influence outcomes. I'm not sure what Hannity and Rush have ever actually done to be traitors - I know exactly what actions Ron Paul has actually undertaken to betray his country's armed forces.
I'm getting confused. Who are our enemies, the secular Ba'athists who hate both Iran and the Saudi Wahhabists, or the Islamic fundamentalist Shi'ite majority, who are Iranian allies? The Bush administration rode into this war with staunch Iranian ally Ahmed Chalabi, and after deposing the Saddam regime, handed power to the Shi'ites. It now seems that policy is coming back to bite them.
The solution would appear to be allowing Kurdistan to complete its secession process and installing a Sunni Ba'athist strongman in Baghdad to keep a lid on the Shia and be a counterweight to Iranian attempts to dominate the region. Unfortunately, the best candidate for the job was recently executed.
It is a complicated matter, and putting more boots on the ground to kick in doors and play roadside bomb-lottery is one-dimensional thinking.
I understand your position, but the elected Iraqi Government is now a Government dominated by convicted Islamic Terrorists who attacked our Embassies and murdered hundreds of United States Marines in cold blood.
"Democracies" who elect mass-murdering Terrorists to Majority Government Power are not worthy of our continued support.
the Real Republican?
Yes those are the right questions.
Ron Paul would abandon the many Iraqis like this one;
Do you agree, yes or no?
OrthodoxPresbyterian, watch the clip before you answer and then explain how you can say yes.
Ron is a nutty politician. Most people in Teas would not support him for PRez.
You have not. Answer the Question.
You continually repeat this lie without documenting your claim.
Ron Paul turned his backs on our troops. I will therefore turn my back on him.
The politics are complex, and I would favor a much stronger approach from the start.
I do know, however, that the cut-and-run, let's publically show lack of resolve to the the terrorists, helps no one but the terrorists.
Such differences should be resolved behind closed doors.
I also make a point of highlighting some of the other issues (guns, taxes, marriage, life, etc.) that many seem to have forgotten about lately.
"Democracies" who elect mass-murdering Terrorists to Majority Government Power are not worthy of our continued support.
I hope you'll consider that question, and hopefully we can work together for Ron Paul's nomination in the future!
Your question is a false premises, much as "When did you stop beating your wife."?
Are you David Gregory, maybe?
So becasue he didn't term limit himself he is now specifically "able to be corrupted?"
I'm not convinced.
PAUL / TANCREDO in 2008
You claimed that convicted terrorists dominate the Iraqi government.
Again, name the names of these convicted terrorists, state their position in Iraq's government, and list the crimes of which they were convicted.
If you are going to make a claim that serious, give us some substance to go on.
"..if the Islamists were marching down Pennsylvania Avenue."
They may not be marching down Penn Ave in the visible sense but the're marching all over the US without anyone doing anything about it. They have become a privileged component in our society.
"I understand your position, but the elected Iraqi Government is now a Government dominated by convicted Islamic Terrorists who attacked our Embassies and murdered hundreds of United States Marines in cold blood."
Are you sure you are not thinking of Iran??
How about some proof of this?
You really don't get it, do you.
If we don't defeat the terrorists who are trying to topple that government, the end result will be ever worse with more terrorists taking over the country. If you think it's bad now, think about what would happened if we were to cut and run.
There would be a terrorist-sponsored dictator (just like Saddam) just as soon as the last American soldier leaves.
In other words, you won't the answer the question. Hannity and Rush repeatedly opposed the Kosovo war and a majority of Republicans, yes a majority, actually voted to cut off the bombing and even threatened to cut off funds. Did the heat get to much for you? I can tell you one thing. Ron Paul wouldn't cut and run or disemble if asked a direct question like that! He holds his friends and enemies to the same standard!
His word means nothing.
About Radley Balko - Weblog of a libertarian writer living in Arlington, Va, and publisher of The Agitator.com.
Radley in his own words I'm a 31-year-old writer and editor living in Alexandria, VA -- just outside Washington, D.C. I live with my wonderful girlfriend and our dogs, a Sharpei/Lab mix named Harper (after Harper Lee) and a bulldog-terrier mix named Isabel (after Isabel Paterson) ..I'm a classical liberal, or libertarian. I like to write. I'm a music buff, a sports nut and a political junkie. One day, I'll teach one of my dogs to retrieve a beer from the refrigerator on command.
This is so stupid on it's own. It is the job of a Soldier or Marine to be in harm's way. It's what they do. I've been there and even got a green teeshirt. This man is an idiot with an idiotic following.
Feh. As if it were possible for me to be more certain that Duncan Hunter will get my vote.
The links are provided right there in the article.
I suggest you read up a bit on the mass murderer, Al-Hakim and his Badr Brigade (now key elements in the Iraqi government).
If you are an American, then your concern should be solely for American interests. In that regard, Israel has no oil and is a net consumer of US tax dollars. The Arabs, by contrast, have all the oil and will obligingly mop up billions of our inflation-soaked dollars in exchange.
US interests in the region are predicated on an alliance with the Arabs, 95% of whom are not terrorists, and who will gladly help us root out the 5% that are. The Assad family in Syria, for example, has killed thousands of members of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood organization.
See the Links in my commentary to the article regarding the SCIRI and Al Dawa Parties.
"Islamic Terrorists who attacked our Embassies and murdered hundreds of United States Marines in cold blood"
I presume this is a reference to the Hezbollah attack on the Marine barracks.
Ironic, as Ron Paul doesn't support Israel in its fight against Hezbollah, and pressured Ronald Reagan into retreat from Lebanon, instead of killing Hezbollah members.
It is well-established Hezbollah was formed under the auspices of the Iranian government, was completely reliant on Iran in 1983 and assisted Iranian Ministry of Information and Security agents in carrying out the operation.
And it is to THAT same Iranian goverment Ron Paul seeeks to surrender Iraq.
So, yes, your question is based on a lie.
Or anti-semetism. One of the two.
The ADL opines Ron Paul is an anti-semite. I generally think the ADL is nutty. But maybe not here.
Now THERE's a Ticket.
Both fine ideas. I say we do both. :-)
Ron Paul is a cut and run coward. He voted against the surge to help win the war. He will never get my vote. To hell with him and I will work to defeat him if he runs for president.
"Israel has no oil and is a net consumer of US tax dollars. The Arabs, by contrast, have all the oil and will obligingly mop up billions of our inflation-soaked dollars in exchange."
So basically, we should abandon good people who just want to live and let live because they are not as strong and profitable to us as the bad people who want to kill the good people.
Oh, I see.
Can you name for me which US combat units were deployed on the ground in Kosovo?
Where exactly in Kosovo were these units stationed?
Which units of the Serbian armed forces did they do battle with?
If Hannity and Rush betrayed American units that were in harm's way in the middle of a combat zone, they should definitely be held to account.
Ron Paul wouldn't cut and run or disemble if asked a direct question like that!
LOL! Unless it was about term limits. Then you'd get a pretty convoluted story.
I watched the clip. It doesn't change the fact that the Ruling Government of Iraq is made up of the Terrorist Al Dawa and SCIRI Parties, who attacked our Embassy in Kuwait (one Iraqi MP is under an in absentia Death Sentence for doing so!) and mass-murdered our Marines in Beirut.
These American-murdering Terrorist Parties are the majority Government in Iraq -- and are unworthy of our continued support.
That is the reason I will not support him.
Ron Paul had my vote, not anymore.
Yes, or No?
Ron Paul - Leader of the White Feather RepublicRATs.
Don't you see? Reniging on term limits is a bedrock libertarian principle.
Bedrock libertarian principles are, of course, whatever Ron Paul wants. They are like reeds in the wind. Like Mohammed's favorite wife once said to him, "It's amazing how God always tells you what you want to hear."
Now that Saddam Hussein is DEAD, do you believe that the Federal Government should spend hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of American Lives to provide military and financial support to a Government dominated by convicted Islamic Terrorists who attacked our Embassies and murdered hundreds of United States Marines in cold blood?
Do you think Saddam should still be in power and alive? If Ron had his way, he would be. Ron is not deserving to lead this country. He is a coward and abandoned our troops on the battlefield.
Ron Paul wanted to hire pirates after 9/11 to respond to al-Qaida on our behalf.
I am embarrassed to admit that he's my congressman, and I'm looking forward to his retirement. I hope he resigns from congress in his futile quest for the Presidency.
And you would have us cut and run and allow the country to be taken over by those nice Iranians....and that is somehow better?
Your arguments, just like your candidate are going nowhere.
Yes, or No?
Nations do not have friends. They only have interests.
What I have proposed is a good imperial solution. But since the US is an anti-imperial institution, it is structurally incapable of doing what is necessary. Therefore, the best option at this point is for the troops to withdraw to Kuwait and Qatar and let the Shia and Sunnis sort things out for themselves.
The link you provided in your article, the one regarding Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his link to the Iraqi Dawn party, is interesting in that it contains sidebar links to all kinds of leftist blogs. I didn't see one conservative blog I recognized.
This tells me something of your agenda. All I can say for those motivated to sign up for your ping list is "buyer beware".
Ron Paul... Surrender monkey.
