Girl Scout Cookies Boycott Called by National Action Against Obesity
National Action Against Obesity ^ | February 19, 2007

New York, NY (PRWeb) February 19, 2007 -- www.actionagainstobesity.com -- As America's child and adult obesity figures rise, National Action Against Obesity (NAAO), calls for a boycott of the reported $700 million in Girl Scout Cookies sold annually.

Profiting off cookies -- it's the wrong message, the wrong product and the wrong era. Girl Scouts have an economic, medical and moral imperative to dump junk food as their $700 million fundraising source. NAAO would like the Girl Scouts to commit to a 5-year plan transitioning away from junk food as the organization's primary fundraiser "Girl Scout Cookies are high-calorie, high-sugar, high in saturated fat and nearly devoid of nutrition. Using young girls as a front to push millions of cookies onto an already bloated population further exacerbates an alarming crisis, no matter how cute the uniforms are," said NAAO President MeMe Roth. "The Girl Scouts sell up to 200 million boxes yearly -- that's about one box for every overweight American."

Girl Scouts of the USA have a flawed business model in direct conflict with their posted mission statement -- 'Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.' "Profiting off cookies -- it's the wrong message, the wrong product and the wrong era. Girl Scouts have an economic, medical and moral imperative to dump junk food as their $700 million fundraising source. NAAO would like the Girl Scouts to commit to a 5-year plan transitioning away from junk food as the organization's primary fundraiser," continued Roth.

NAAO suggests Girl Scouts look to Boy Scouts as a model -- they're known for community service, unlike Girl Scouts singularly identified with baked goods. "Do your good deed -- while Girl Scout Cookies are on sale through March, smile at the children, offer a donation, but leave those cookies behind."

Look for a MeMe, Girl Scout approved, exercize video soon.
$19.99 retail - $0.01 of proceeds to go to the GS.
The 'Thin Mints' will now be a Pilates position.

Title: "Look at ME - Look at MEMEMEME"
It'll be a win-win /s

You get the Blue Ribbon this morning for that observation, Mo1.

It would be interesting to look into the funding sources for NAAO.

If you remember the troop number you can go to the GSUSA website and there will be contact info to lodge a complaint.

No, but if you could use those same girls as a front to push your fascist ideology onto an increasingly assaulted and gullible population, if you could use them to push the homosexual agenda, the free sex agenda, the global warming agenda,, if you had the power to break their will, drain their minds, make them your own personal, private little army of girl activists complete with cute little black uniforms,, that would be just fine, wouldn't it!

"Girl Scout Cookies are high-calorie, high-sugar, high in saturated fat and nearly devoid of nutrition.

I could say that this story is a fake based on the fact that anything that's high calorie, high sugar, high fat is nutritionally dense, not devoid of nutrition, but these kinds of people say stuff like this all the time.

What makes me think this is fake is that they hold up the Boy Scouts as a good example. Food wackos, in the mode of Center for Science in the Public Interest types, are usually politically left and, therefore, would be against the Boy Scouts.

Why are you adressing your reply #127 to me?

I neither posted the article nor said what you have within quotation marks.

You do, in fact, manage the grocery store, and had I been accosted by obnoxious adults and children, I would have gone to see the Manager of the chain and reminded him/her of his/her duties to his/her customers. No one has the right to demand anything. I'm just saying that our experience was in the "traditional" sense of the endeavor to raise troop monies. I and my husband are suckers for well-behaved, attractive children, supervised by equally attractive, respectful adults selling "Thin Mints" or Innsbrook wrapping papers, etc. The big baby of the household has a weakness for "Thin Mints" and finds blonde, blue-eyed angelic faces irresistable (or so he told me when we were dating).

I'm sorry for the abuse you suffered at the hands of the cookie monsters and feel your pain. Note to yourself: AVOID grocery store in future during spring/fall, depending on your area's scouting cookie sales. Otherwise, complain to the manager about the infidels accosting you in the aisles.

Just a guess here but wouldn't that be the same as when people post Scrappleface stories? If so where's the problem if it's a vanity thread?

Good Lord, is there no end to the joylessness and hand-wringing?

It's too bad our manufacturing base is so small now, or these people would be working worthwhile jobs in shoe shops or textile mills.

Yes, I am serious. You can verify with Melanie Morgan or Move America Forward directly. They started sending a different kind of cookies because of it.

I just sent them an e-mail, asking who funds them.

If they answer, I'll share their response with everyone.

Good for them, but I bet if you checked with the national office of the Girl Scouts, they would tell you not to do so. That is what happened to Move America Forward. They purchased thousands of dollars worth of cookies from a local chapter in California. They advertised it all over the radio station that Melanie Morgan works for. When the Girl Scouts of America found out, they sent the letter to Move America Forward to stop using their cookies and their name.
