Gun Remark Kills Outdoorsman's Career (WP)
The Washington Post ^ | 24 FEB 07 | Blaine Harden

SEATTLE - Modern hunters rarely become more famous than Jim Zumbo. A mustachioed, barrel-chested outdoors entrepreneur who lives in a log cabin near Yellowstone National Park, he has spent much of his life writing for prominent outdoors magazines, delivering lectures across the country and starring in cable TV shows about big-game hunting in the West.

Zumbo's fame, however, has turned to black-bordered infamy within America's gun culture -- and his multimedia success has come undone. It all happened in the past week, after he publicly criticized the use of military-style assault rifles by hunters, especially those gunning for prairie dogs.

That's quite a varmint rifle!

Seriously though, the second amendment has nothing to do with hunting.

I'm happy to see so many folks here that understand that.

This is a sad day, though, none the less. (Head in hands)

For all intents and purposes the 2nd Amendment today is about hunting weapons.

Hope you have your asbestos undies handy 'cuz you're gonna need them. I'll be right back after my popcorn comes out of the microwave...;-)

Actually, a guy named Petzal at Field and Stream did the same thing in 1993, and got away with it (at least until today---it appears the back-blast from Zumbo has recalled him to the active memory of the "black guns" community, and a similar ****storm is going on at HIS blog.

Belated, but well deserved.

Rush was a relative newcomer

I still remember being infuriated with Rush on the day they voted on the AW ban. He started off his show talking about something really important happening in the House that day, and then went off about some BS bill I had never heard of, when I knew they were voting on the AW ban that day. He could have prevented that ban single-handedly if he had simply mentioned it on his show.

Why do people seem to be down on "select-fire" weapons here?

That was the great RKBA division of '34, I believe. That was the last time there was real success at spalling off one group of firearms owners and declaring their arms a 'device of evil'.

The 2nd amendment prohibits the federal government from making laws relating to arms - period.

Yes, but the hit parade of infringements just keeps coming and coming.

As long as people are too stupid or historically challenged to realize the founders (who had just wrested control from a tyrannical government) wanted the people to be armed to guard themselves against tyranny, the infringements will continue.

Hunting was viewed as a 'right' in need of protection about as much as we would seek to protect the right to go grocery shopping today.

Agreed, which is why I used assault rifle and not assault weapon.

Yup. But AnAmericanMother mentioned "assault weapons", so...

Also, there are often lurkers on these threads, including some who don't know a whole lot about firearms.

I try to keep that in mind, when posting to threads like this. I hope it doesn't make me sound too much like a broken record.

I think that will be the case for a long time. The sheeple seem to like being house slaves. It is pretty sad what happened to this country.

Now the anti's are going after .22's and shotguns along with semiautomatics.

They won't stop until they get the guns designed to project the dangerous chemical dihydrogen monoxide. (did you know that even small children can legally buy them - with no background check?)

By the way, that was quick work and quite appropiate too.

I can't take credit for it. I found it over at AR15.COM

I've got a couple, maybe three more I found there, and elsewhere, if anyone wants a chuckle.

Just trying to square the document with reality. Somewhere along the line we lost our rights to bear whatever arms we need to overthrow our government. Even the NRA doesn't seem interested in allowing that. So if the intent of the 2nd amendment was to keep government at bay through the threat of force and a bloody revolution every 200 years, how is that possible today?

...chemical dihydrogen monoxide.

That stuff can kill you! It should be banned for the children. They should make that a controlled substance to save the children from accidental poisoning.

Obviously, Mr. Harden has been drinking the Brady Campaign Kool-Aid.

The Washington Post one published anti-gun articles or Editorials over 300 days in a row. Don't expect truth from them. They are the "running dog lackys" of the forces of tyranny. The best thing about the Compost is that its circulation is declining like all other urban marxist rags

I should have said, "originally designed for" special forces = Sturmgewehr.

My personal opinion is that the battle rifle should be brought back for regular troops. "Spray and pray" has been no substitute for good marksmanship.

"What Zumbo said was stupid and wrong but it amazes me how vicious we on the right become..."

Last time I checked STUPID and WRONG were not qualities we on the right looked for in our leaders. As a business owner STUPID and WRONG is not even something I look for in my least critical employee. If we were to gladly put up with leadership types and talking heads who were prone to be STUPID and WRONG how would we be able to tell ourselves from the democrats?

Although I never knew this Zumbo, I'm glad we live in a free market society where nobody has the right to piss on his customers with impunity.
Quite frankly I believe that not only does Mr. Zumbo not understand the original intent of our second amendment but he also arrogantly fails to grasp what hunting originally was. A desperate attempt to feed one's self and family by capturing and/or killing unowned wildlife in the most expeditious way possible.
If a hungry Daniel Boone, or Kit Carson had been given an "assault rifle" I guarantee you they'd have pitched their flintlock in a heartbeat and hunted with the best firepower they could bring to bear on those tasty animals. Leave it to some latter-day windbag to pompously declare that hunting is only hunting when done per his preferred tradition.
