Third body found in Guatemala sinkhole

February 25, 2007

GUATEMALA CITY -- Emergency crews Saturday found a third body in a 330-foot-deep sinkhole that had swallowed a dozen homes and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood.

The body of Domingo Soyos, 53, was carried out of the enormous fissure and identified by family members, medical crews said.

Soyos was the father of teenagers Irma and David Soyos, whose bodies were found floating in a river of sewage soon after the sinkhole opened Friday.

Residents said there were other people unaccounted for, but emergency crews could not confirm that.

Officials blamed recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main for the tragedy. The pit emitted foul odors, loud noises and tremors, shaking the surrounding ground. A rush of water could be heard from its depths, and authorities feared it could widen or other sinkholes could open.

Police evacuated nearby homes and cordoned off a 500-yard perimeter around the crater. Security officials were on guard for possible looters and curious onlookers.

Maybe someone needs to step off the distance to make sure, but if that's 500 yards, then it looks like I can hit a nine iron about 500 yards in Guatemala.

Hey look! France!

Oops, nevermind.
I just remembered that France is an above-ground hole.

Yeah, but a hole like that does wonders for anyone's short game.

You know, that's all I'm asking for is a golf course with cups THAT size. I could probably get down in three from off the green that way.

On the courses I play, imagine how big that would make the fiberglass windmill!

Ruptured main? 330 feet deep? C'mon, even if they ran the main 33' deep, it's not going to erode 300' deep. Besides, where is the broken pipe sticking out of the sides of the hole? Looks to me like they unwittingly built the town over an underground chasm and the roof finally gave out.

No, it's from eroding limestone underneath the ground, usually along the path of an underground river. You can tell by the smooth sides . . .

My aunt was an archaeologist in the Yucatan, and these naturally occurring sinkholes are all over the place. They're called cenotes. The ancient inhabitants used to throw maidens into them as sacrifices.

There have been several articles in National Geographic from the 1960s forward. A recent one showed photographs of a cenote that's connected with the ocean by underground passages. Some (really brave and really stupid) scuba divers actually went through.
