Will a blood clot force Cheney to step down?

Dick Cheney has been diagnosed with a blood clot in his left leg, leading to speculation he will be forced to resign as U.S. Vice-President.

The 66-year-old has a history of major health problems, including four heart attacks, and has undergone quadruple-bypass surgery.

He is a driving force in both the war in Iraq and the 'war on terror' and his resignation would be a huge loss to George Bush.

The vice-president is the leader of Washington's neo-conservatives and is believed to be a dominant influence on Mr Bush's military and foreign policies.

I hope Cheney will not step down, not at this juncture, anyway.

Of course not. They can use TPA to quickly dissolve the clot, and he can stay on anticoagulant medicine. He's actually lucky that his clot wasn't serious. Many are killed by blood clots. Vice President Cheney should be just fine.

Condi would make a good VP and the Senate would easily confirm her.

No, a new VEEP has to be passed on by Congress. But you're right about Pelosi NOT being the VEEP, is Cheney has to step down, which he most probably won't be.

Is it in the Consitution that the senate must confirm? I don't get that really, the President gets to pick who runs with him without 'approval' why would a appointment for vacany in the VP slot be any different???

25th Amendment. Think about it. The Senate has to approve all of the president's treaties. The Senate confirms his cabinet appointments. And both houses confirm a VP replacement.

Sadly, far too few posters here, now, know even the most basic thing about politics or government and it keeps getting worse.

Like you, I too am fed up with the sudden plethora of really ignorant posts.

I had thought a VP appointment only needed Senate approval. I was too young to pay attention when Richard Nixon appointed Gerald Ford. Thanks for the info. It still won't matter, though - the democrats would kill any nomination that Bush made. Their hatred for him and their lust for power is so overwhelming that they would gladly leave the VP slot vacant for almost two years in a time of war in order to deny George Bush any kind of victory.

BW appoints, senate confirms, as new VP, a la Gerald Ford, among others. Now the dems could refuse to confirm W's choice, which could lead to some interesting issues.

The article is nonsense, of course, but since we're playing the speculation game, if Cheney should decide to resign, he should pull a Sandra Day O'Connor stunt and make his resignation effective only upon the confirmation of his successor. Now THAT would be "interesting". /grin
