letters to the editor of the Globe about Deval
AS AN early supporter of Deval Patrick and a delegate for him at the nominating convention last year, I am disappointed and bewildered by his performance as governor. Anyone can make rookie mistakes, but serial stupidity does not fit into that category and is inexcusable ("Patrick says he erred in call to firm: Effort to aid lender shakes supporters," Page A1, March 7).
Making good decisions consistently should be the real challenge; avoiding doing stupid things regularly shouldn't even be on the radar screen.
The Globe has a reputation, at least among my conservative friends, as being an apologist for liberal causes and Democratic politicians. Your coverage of the Patrick administration has been fair, informative, and appropriate in its unflattering objectivity. I hope that he will start doing his job as well as you are doing yours.
DAVID R. CLARRIDGE
Newburyport
I AM still driving around with the blue and white Deval Patrick sticker on the back of my car, but I am getting worried. In his campaign Patrick appealed to our sense of commonwealth, our collective responsibility for "broken roads" and "broken neighbors," and I loved it. But what is he doing -- the Cadillac, the chief of staff for his wife (obviously an underpaid partner at Ropes and Gray), the expensive office redecoration plans, the call to Robert Rubin at Citigroup on behalf of Ameriquest, one of Patrick's less-than-sterling corporate affiliations?
Apologists call this inexperience. That's too generous. These things, singly and combined, are stupid, and Patrick, inexperienced maybe, is not stupid. So what's going on? I don't know, but I am worried that he might be just another elitist, entitled politician. I really hope not.

WHY IS everyone missing the obvious message Patrick is sending? Like his mentor William Jefferson Clinton, once elected, he is above the law. Now settle back and let him do his thing, even if it is "politics as usual." He's no rookie. He learned from a master.
ARTHUR MATTOS
South Boston
DURING HIS campaign , Deval Patrick described himself as an "outsider . . . who didn't grow up in the Beacon Hill culture." But now that's he's in office, he needs to understand Beacon Hill culture enough to know that it will not tolerate a governor who leases a flashy Cadillac, spends $27,000 on interior decorating, and does favors for private mortgage companies. My advice to Governor Patrick is: Hire a few of those Beacon Hill insiders as advisers, to help you avoid committing any more blunders like these.

I used to get haircuts at a place in Reading that had a bunch of those old signs--actually recreations of them--on the wall
including the Ted for Moxie and Ted's Root Beer signs.

Now, I still keep a copy of MS Word97 installed just to print out envelopes and labels.
I can keep a word doc of just addresses and print them out easily, whether envelopes or labels.
No db needed with a doc file. Great for keeping track of rebates, semi-frequent addresses, etc. with a minimum of fuss.
Otherwise, I generally use OO2.1.
For me, a typewriter would just be a piece of clutter, given that a lot of forms are enterable PDF's now a days.

We warned people...now they see just how bad their dream guy can be. Don't blame me, I voted for Muffy (saw a car with that sticker just off Cabot St in Beverly the other day)

I was wondering the same thing.

Did you see any shootings, muggings, former mayors buying coke, or Arabs handing Congresscritters bags of cash?
How about any pimps or madams hawking the names of clients?

My father liked Moxie -- he used to mix it with milk, which I guess was kind of common.
It was a brown tonic (note the New England usage!), not nearly sweet enough for kids to like it -- maybe something like sarsparilla (if I'm spelling that right and which I don't remember that well!) without all the sugar.
I vaguely recall hearing that it was a favorite with people trying to stop drinking.
