Does the sun cause global warming?
Fox News.com / Live Science ^ | March 12, 2007 | Ker Than

Earth is heating up lately, but so are Mars, Pluto and other worlds in our solar system, leading some scientists to speculate that a change in the sun's activity is the common thread linking all these baking events. Others argue that such claims are misleading and create the false impression that rapid global warming, such as Earth is experiencing, is a natural phenomenon. While evidence suggests fluctuations in solar activity can affect climate on Earth, and that it has done so in the past, the majority of climate scientists and astrophysicists agree that the sun is not to blame for the current and historically sudden uptick in global temperatures on Earth, which seems to be mostly a mess created by our own species.

"Global warming on Neptune's moon Triton as well as Jupiter and Pluto, and now Mars has some [scientists] scratching their heads over what could possibly be in common with the warming of all these planets ... Could there be something in common with all the planets in our solar system that might cause them all to warm at the same time?"

NO!!! It's man and his evil hummers!! LOL

You know, blaming man for changes in global climate is like blaming the potatos for making the water in the pot boil.

The sun?? No kidding!!

With these kind of skills of observation, maybe these scientists should join the WOT and help us figure out what all those young male middle-Eastern Muslim terrorists have in common.

You know--I'd forgotten that Jupiter was developing a new storm spot. I wonder how we humans are managing that?

It's certainly possible that some coincidence has caused all these warmings at the same time, but it does sound like they're merely speculating on some of them, because they don't want it to be sun irradiance. Further, blaming the mars warming on its Milankovitch cycles seems far-fetched to me. For earth, at least, Milankovitch cycles run 20,000 years and longer (probably most notable at around 100,000 years, the periodicity of the last 4 ice ages). And since mars is farther from the sun and has much smaller moons, I would expect its Milankovitch cycles to be even slower. (I welcome a correction or any links on mars's Milankovitch cycles.)

It does in Wyoming.

When the sun goes down it starts cooling off.

It keeps getting colder all night.

When the sun comes up the next morning, it starts warming.

That continues all day.

I think that shows that there is a connection between the sun and the temperature.

We must stop this threat immediately. After all, who ever trusted the sun beside Galileo and Newton, anyway? We must send Al Gore as our ambassador to the sun to make it run it's business properly or else we'll really get mad!

The people on Mars and the other planets should get rid of their Hummers and other SUV's.

That piece reads like a Global Warmers' fearful reaction to the "sun" theory. Even gives wiggle room for the idea, "yes, the sun is cause, BUT only partial."

An excellent video on the subject. You may have seen it on Drudge. About an hour long.

I predict that by 2012 all predictions will have been changed; by 2097, nobody will remember why.

What is the zip code for Mars so I can send in my "global warming credits"?

You can throw this article right in the trash can.....the emminent scientist Michael Mann is quote, thus making anything in the article suspect. he is the creator of the famous 'hockey stick' graph used by the IPCC in their 2001 report to show man made global warming. When asked to show the formulas he used, he refused. Since then, the graph was shown to be such a piece of sh!t that the IPCC does not even mention it in their current 2007 report about the imminent threat of global warming...........

Michael Mann is a well-known climatologist, author of more than 80 peer-reviewed ... Mother Jones, 18 April 2005, "The Man Behind the Hockey Stick" - interview ...

need I say more? I am surprised any reputable publication would even look this phony up for a quote. He could be considered one of Pope Al 'global' Gore's primary cardinals.

I guess the theory of the sun causing global warming would kinda messes up their plans to redistribute the wealth of America to third-world countries.

correction, was the 1995 report by the IPCC that had the hocley stick.Dr Michael Mann of the Department of Geosciences, University of Massachusetts was the primary author of the GRL paper, and in one scientific coup overturned the whole of climate history [16].

Using tree rings as a basis for assessing past temperature changes back to the year 1,000 AD, supplemented by other proxies from more recent centuries, Mann completely redrew the history, turning the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age into non-events, consigned to a kind of Orwellian `memory hole' [22]. Fig.4 shows Mann's revision of the climatic history of the last millennium.
