Everybody has to start somewhereOur parish is using Latin once a month for the Mass Ordinaries ... Kyrie ... Gloria ... Credo ... Sanctus ... and Agnus Dei
AnAmericanMother, I'm sure you know the Kyrie isn't Latin, and it just slipped past you, but we wouldn't want to teach Caramelgal something inaccurate. The Kyrie is in Greek - Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison.

Thanks! My wife was baptized episcopal though, but she chose Holy Holy Holy by John Baccus Dykes for other music in the catholic wedding mass (everything else was classical).

OK, very technical . . . but the Latin Mass does include the "Kyrie" even though it is in Greek.

The "Dies Irae" theme has been used by LOTSA folks. Most recently, in a Nike commercial (with rappers in front of the theme !?!?!?) and in the Lion King movie, when papa lion is about to assume room temperature.
In addition, there was a CD released by some Spanish monks in the late '80's which was a mega-hit.
Finally, you'll find the Chant theme "Lumen ad Revelationem" in one of the Christmas albums from Mannheim Steamroller.

Heh.
My #2 kid is getting hitched soon. Program will be a Trumpet Voluntary entrance, Peeters' Wedding Song at Offertory, Franck's Panis at Communion, the CHANT Ave Maria for the side-altar visitation, and Bach's D-major Fugue for recessional.
Worth buying a ticket...

Wow I can't believe the bible puts you to sleep....maybe you should get a paraphrase version like The Message.
To: AnAmericanMother
Your Parish is most certainly NOT using Latin for the Kyrie (Lord Have Mercy).
It's using Greek!
But you already knew that.

Latin Mass is also offered at Old St. Mary's Parish in Washington, DC; St. Lawrence Parish in Alexandria, VA; and St. John the Baptist Parish in Front Royal, VA.

That church fire is so sad... where is/was that?It was in Fort Wayne Indiana. I believe there is a park on the property now, although I have not been back to Fort Wayne in several years.

Thanks, but I'm not the one who needs to know. ravensandricks is the one who was looking for a traditional Latin Mass in the Baltimore area.

You can see several video clips from it on YouTube. On the one hand, these clips are breathtakingly beautiful. OTOH, it's depressing to see how far we've fallen liturgically.

I don't know where or when I first heard them, but I love Gregorian chants.....they're on my top ten....except that they all sound so much alike!! LOLOLOL!!!

As if chanting in a foreign language is going to benefit someone's spirituality! Ha, ha! Now chant repeatedly after me, faster each time: Oh - Wa - Ta - Fu - Li - Yam

And a miserere nobis to you, too!
I could argue that even though in Greek, the Kyrie is a traditional part of the Latin Mass . . .

Catholics were taught that Latin was the universal language and used in our church because people of all languages would be following the same Mass in Latin. We were also required to take Latin in high school because in addition to it's usefulness religion wise, it was a foundation for other languages. I welcome the Pope's efforts to draw Catholics back to the majesty of the Gregorian chant and the Latin/English missal. Now, I hope he will continue with this mode of cleaning up after the 1960's liberals who sank so much of Catholic tradition. Specifically, stop pushing physical contacts, handshakes, hugs, etc on the congregation. Many of us prefer to socialize after Mass and this was a practice inflicted by the liberals who brought about the rest of jazzing up the service.

Unless all of the innovative parishes burned too then it was probably not due to the music.

Wouldn't this be better in the Religion Forum?I suppose so. (sigh)
I posted it in News / Activism because
- The article is being carried in the mainstream press as a general news item, not in their "Religion" sections. The Pope's release of the apostolic exhortation document (from which the points about Gregorian chants emanate) is a major, newsworthy event and is being covered as such, oftentimes on the front page or at least the "A" sections.
- The FR "Culture / Society" subheading is designated as being for the discussion of religion, among other things.
- I was hoping to reach the widest possible audience with this article, in the hope that people who have left the Church or who have become less active in it because of a dissatisfaction with Vatican II "reforms" as well as the various 1960's - era corruptions might see it and consider coming back to the Church. I thought that these folks might be more likely to be browsing the News / Activism areas instead of the Religion section. I thought that the people who are already active in the Church wouldn't be needing such encouragement.
That being said, you are probably right and it should have been posted in "Religion" instead. I'm sorry.
