Fred Thompson Quotes

"Every foreign policy of every major nation involves reason, common sense, carrots and sticks. You can't have all carrots and no sticks."

"You can't buy peace by just wishing it and avoiding the challenges that other nations present to you."

"The problem is that agencies sometimes lose sight of common sense as they create regulations."

"After two years in Washington, I often long for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood."

"Is it really in our country’s best interest to signal to the enemy that they probably only have to wait us out a little longer because congressional determination to defeat them is crumbling? Doesn’t such a resolution further diminish our chances for success at the very time our soldiers are preparing to go into battle? And finally, regardless of our politics is this the time to announce to the world that our president is 'on his own'?"

"I think Roe vs. Wade was bad law and bad medical science. And the way to address that is through good judges."

"I think that we ought to be a tolerant nation. I think we ought to be tolerant people. But we shouldn't set up special categories for anybody."

"You know, marriage is between a man and a woman, and I don't believe judges ought to come along and change that."

"I'm against gun control generally. You know, you check my record. You'll find I'm pretty consistent on that issue."

"The court [by overturning the D.C. gun ban] basically said the Constitution means what it says, and I agree with that."

"We've got a situation where people could give politicians huge sums of money, which is the soft money situation at that time, and then come before those same politicians and ask them to pass legislation for them. I mean, you get thrown in jail for stuff like that in the real world."

"I'm concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million [illegal immigrants]. So that's why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary."

"If Saddam Hussein was still around today with his sons looking at Iran developing a nuclear capability, he undoubtedly would have reconstituted his nuclear capability. Things would be worse than what they are today."

"Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify things. I think we're doing that now."

"I'd do it [pardon Scooter Libby] now. This is a trial that never would have been brought in any other part of the world. This is a miscarriage of justice."

"We've got an entitlement program that's bankrupting us. We've got things going on in Thailand, in Indonesia, in places that nobody ever talks about anymore that could impact on us."

"They're [the Red Chinese] still a totalitarian government that is building up their military tremendously and has 200 missiles pointed toward Taiwan."

"I'm going to give it [running for president] serious consideration."

Wow, so moving! The great communicator. My president. Thank you.
It was with a humble honor that I can say I voted twice for him.

For me right now it's a tough call between writing in Fred Thompson's name and writing in Haley Barbour's.

I'm leaning towards Haley but if Fred is on ballot he has my vote.

realism and sincerity of Hollywood

All I need to know, and nothing Reaganesque about him.

I believe Fred intended for us to file that under "Self Deprecating Humor", not under "Deeply Held Principle."

I don't subscribe to the Evans Novak Report, but from this thread:
"The hype over former Sen. Fred Thompson has some substance to it, as the actor-politician has already begun approaching experienced campaign hands in key states," according to the latest Evans-Novak Political Report.

"Thompson effectively embraced the Republican right when he ran for and entered the U.S. Senate. From the perspective of the Republican Party's conservative base, he stacks up well against each of the "Big Three" leading Republican candidates. His voting record (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 86%) in the Senate is more conservative than that of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain (lifetime ACU rating: 82%), none of his position-switches are nearly as bad or as recent as those of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), and nothing in his background is as negative as that of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R)."

"Given enough money, Thompson could make a good run at it by tearing down the conservative credentials of the 'Big Three' and then building himself up as a tax-cutting, pro-life former senator. His acting role on Law & Order does not hurt, either."

The Evans Novak Political Report is just an email newsletter, so that may be all that was said.

It was a joke, LOL! Some people have no sense of humor...

Sure it was. He refuses to identify Hollywood as a bastion of liberial elites. Those people are his friends. Remember when Orin Hatch said Ted Kenney was his best friend, then gave us Ginsburg.

Thompson was saying that D.C. is a surreal, insincere place - even when compared to Hollywood (the benchmark for comparing things that are surreal or insincere).

It was a joke, a insult of the Washington culture by saying the phoniness of Hollywood is even better by comparison.

I really don't think Sen. Thompson has ever refused to identify Hollywood for what it really is. This comment, and the sarcasm it is wrapped is a good example of his feelings.

And as far as them being his "friends" seen any new Fred Thompson movies lately or his face on E magazine or anything...

"I'm against gun control generally. You know, you check my record. You'll find I'm pretty consistent on that issue."

I'm sure there are some of my brethren here who will take great exception to his qualification of "generally" but I think he's close enough to the mark to allow him the courtesy of enough time to make his full position clear.

It's my understanding that he's pretty unambiguously on our side.
