(CBS) NEW YORK Several candidates for president are on a fast pace for fundraising. Democrat Hillary Clinton has set a record and Republican Rudy Giuliani isn't far behind.
But it's what Giuliani said Monday that will likely steal the headlines.
The former New York City mayor is fending off increased media scrutiny of his third wife -- the former Judith Nathan. Rudy is now asking the media to back off.
"Attack me all you want," Giuliani said. "There's plenty to attack me about. Please do it. But maybe, you know, show a little decency."
That's a tough sell for a man who suggested he might invite his wife into cabinet meetings.
As for the fundraising race -- we're still waiting on figures from Sen. John McCain -- but this is looking like a new era in money politics. A total of four candidates -- Sen. Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama, Giuliani and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have broken the old record for this point in a presidential campaign.
The New Yorkers in the 2008 presidential race apparently know where the money is. Both Rudy and Hillary are raking in big bucks although Hillary is clearly in the lead money-wise.
New York's junior senator pulled in $26 million in her first quarter of fundraising, nearly tripling the previous record set by Al Gore in 1999.
Giuliani said Monday he knows what he's up against. One of his Republican rivals -- Romney has shaken up the GOP field by reporting a Hillary-like war chest of $23 million. Rudy on the other hand has raised $15 million, but insists he has the GOP momentum.
"We raised almost all of it in March and what that says if we can keep doing March that way we'll have over $100 million," Giuliani said.
Clinton was in New Jersey Monday to pick up the endorsement of Gov. Jon Corzine.
"I'm running for president because I want to get back to setting goals for our country," Clinton said during her first campaign appearance in the Garden State.
Hillary has one eye on Democratic rival Obama, who is thought to be close on her fundraising heels.
Lay off his wife? Guiliani is the one that brought her up by saying she would attend cabinet meetings.
Why are so many people laying on his wife?
He posed with her on the cover of the New York post, with her sitting on his lap, while they smooched for the cameras.
It seemed like he wanted all this attention on her.
May I remind you this is a CBS article. Or is CBS now the sender of all correct information to you.
We don’t want this jerk for President!
He was asked informally, and he said it offhanded as would probably any candidate if asked that in the manner he was. But I like Guiliani is fighting back against the media so early. It’s going to be a tough year.
I dunno, she seems like a nice person - except for that Vagina Monologues thing and all:
Oops! Wrong wife. Sorry. That was wife #2, or was she #3?
Anyway, here is the current Mrs. Giuliani.
Decency?! Decency?!
Talking to the media?!
Oh Rudy, so late the chivalry!
Like any other liberal, he wants it BOTH ways when it is to HIS advatage.
GO away Rudy!
Make your goal a FOURTH wife.
We don’t WANT your values or way of life.
Hey, See BS is a crummy organization, but there wasn't much for them to "spin" in this article. They even have a video of Rudy at the link saying exactly what they printed that he said.
You can blame the MSM for a lot of things. This isn't one of them.
It’s almost clintonesque. Go on with babwa wawa friday night in front of the whole nation with your wife. 3 days later, say “leave my wife out of this!!!”
WTH???
Which one?
Damn! I wanted to be the first to ask that.
I was responding to the article. How you arrive at the conclusion that I believe “CBS is now the sender of all correct information” is frankly bizarre.
ROFL! Thin-skinned Rudy, who wants her in on cabinet meetings, says she can’t be discussed! What a pathetic puss!
Ah, rudy, just let her go kill some more dogs while hittin the sauce, two of her favorite things.
I didn’t realize Lou Young was running for President, but you are right=we don’t want him
