Democrats Operate on a Platform of Hate (Pelosi Smackdown!)
NewsMax ^ | April 4, 2007 | E. Ralph Hostetter

Posted on 04/06/2007 12:09:04 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Like flotsam on a sea of hate, the far left liberal contingency of the U.S. Congress seems to be drifting far from the principles established by the U.S. Constitution.

Having failed, so far, to divide congressional members of the left into numerous commanders in chief to direct America's war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the one and only, self-proclaimed "most powerful woman in the world," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has taken over the U.S. ship of state and floated off to Damascus, Syria, with a crew made up of members of Congress.

The U.S. Constitution confines the U.S. Congress to matters clearly defined as legislative.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Arthur Vandenberg under the administration of President Nixon stated quite emphatically, "politics stops at the water's edge." The U.S. Constitution specifically assigns matters of state, including treaties, to the president of the United States, who, through his secretary of state, deals directly with all foreign powers.

President Bush admonished Pelosi in a Rose Garden question-and-answer session on April 3, calling her trip "counterproductive."

"Going to Syria sends mixed signals, signals in the region and, of course, mixed signals to President Assad," Bush said. "And by that I mean, you know, photo opportunities and/or meetings with President Assad lead the Assad government to believe they're part of the mainstream of the international community, when in fact, they're a state sponsor of terror."

In a most contemptible manner, Speaker Pelosi has refused the request of the president of the United States. Pelosi has undercut the effectiveness of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Payback for 2000 - didn’t I read where the Left would never acknowledge GWB as the president, and disobey him at any turn?

The Justice Department should be directed by President Bush to investigate Pelosi. It is time to take on the RATS.

Pelosi violated the Logan Act and needs to be prosecuted. If you haven’t done so, write your representative. We need to urge congress to remove her from office.

I will certainly call my Reps. and Senators. That being said, I do not expect to hear the two words “Logan Act” on the news anytime....ever.

I got a different perspective from the WSJ today. This is a good article.

The Logan Act makes it a felony and provides for a prison sentence of up to three years for any American, “without authority of the United States,” to communicate with a foreign government in an effort to influence that government’s behavior on any “disputes or controversies with the United States.” Some background on this statute helps to understand why Ms. Pelosi may be in serious trouble.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.”

That’s the Logan Act. There is no exception for members of congress.

Here's the text of the law:

§ 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments.

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

18 U.S.C. § 953 (2004).

“That being said, I do not expect to hear the two words “Logan Act” on the news anytime....ever.”

Actually, I heard them discussing it on Fox News earlier today. I forget who was talking about it, but they pretty much agreed that Pelosi had committed a felony.

There’s no doubt that she committed the crime, it’s just a matter of holding her accountable.

But wait! As soon as Pelosi is back home she will rule on all the current cases before the Supreme Court.

Then we hold a coronation...

The reference to President Nixon is clearly a mistake for FDR—Sen. Arthur H. Vandenberg died in 1951.

Much ado over nothing. The Logan Act has never been used to prosecute anyone in over 200 years, notwithstanding the number of times it's been invoked to threaten people like Ramsey Clark et al. in the last 40 years or so. It's also probably unconstitutionally vague. The WSJ editorialists should save their hot air for some issue on which they'll be more credible.

No, I’ve read it various places, including another forum. Seems to me that the key is whether she was operating with the authority of the US Government. The constitution gives that authority to the President. On the other hand, one could say she is part of the US government, 3rd in line for President. A constitutional question. But really, I don’t know.

I’d love to see her get slapped with a felony. I can dream on....

Okay, but I've also seen posted here and elsewhere that members of Congress are exempt.

I'd like to see something authoritative on this either way.

It’s more pointed than just “never acknowledging GWB” .. it’s more like jealousy that he won 2000 and “stole” their power. GWB was not entitled to win .. therefore he should not be entitled to rule.

It’s all so logical .. don’t you see ..?????

I don’t really need a tag do I ..??

Yes, mine too .. but according to Rich Galen, the Constitution says that only SENATORS have “advise and consent” granted to them, and HOUSE MEMBERS DO NOT - not even the speaker.

If we had anybody in D.C. with a spine, she would have been handcuffed when she landed back in the USA.

But .. don’t worry .. democrats are NEVER HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS - CRIMINAL OR NOT!!

The leftwing media were so quick to denounce Pelosi.

Hmmm....

At whose bidding, I wonder....

This feckless woman screwup isn't good news for missus clinton, (a feckless (woman?) screwup in her own right)....

It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is that they can't see the problem.

G. K. Chesterton

... While America appears not to be ready for a female president under any circumstances, the post-9/11 realities pose special problems for a female presidential candidate. Add to these the problems unique to missus clinton. The reviews make the mistake of focusing on the problems of the generic female presidential candidate running during ordinary times.

These are not ordinary times. America is waging the global War on Terror; the uncharted territory of asymmetric netherworlds is the battlefield; the enemy is brutal, subhuman; the threat of global conflagration is real.

Defeating the enemy isn't sufficient. For America to prevail, she must also defeat a retrograde, misogynous mindset. To successfully prosecute the War on Terror, it is essential that the collective patriarchal islamic culture perceives America as politically and militarily strong. Condi Rice excepted, this requirement presents an insurmountable hurdle for any female presidential candidate, and especially missus clinton, historically antimilitary--(an image, incidentally, that is only enhanced today by her clumsy, termagant parody of Thatcher), forever the pitiful victim, and, according to Dick Morris, "the biggest dove in the clinton administration."

It is ironic that had the clintons not failed utterly to fight terrorism... not failed to take bin Laden from Sudan... not failed repeatedly to decapitate a nascent, still stoppable al Qaeda... the generic female president as a construct would still be viable... missus clinton's obstacles would be limited largely to standard-issue clintonisms: corruption, abuse, malpractice, malfeasance, megalomania, rape and treason... and, in spite of Juanita Broaddrick, or perhaps because of her, Rod Lurie would be reduced to perversely hawking the "First Gentleman" instead of the "Commander-in-Chief."
