Are Imus Remarks Any Worse Than Some Rappers?

Some context: Imus was correct. A lot of hip-hop artists have said worse things. It was only last week that we saw Snoop Dogg being praised for criticizing conservative pundit Bill O'Reilly on a popular Netherlands TV talk show.

What got lost amid the applause was Snoop's referring to his former female lawyer, Lauren Lake, who had appeared on "The O'Reilly Factor," as a "ho who was doing the bidding of her pimp" (meaning Snoop).

see these lyrics:

BTW, Chris Rock joked about them in one of his shows as being really offensive and awful, but he still joked about it.

I would say the difference is rappers do not have MSM elite types regularly sucking up to them on their albums. This line of reasoning seems like a lame attempt to put the onus back on Blacks for what was nothing more than a pure insult to some people who clearly didn’t deserve it. Imus should have called the Duke false accuser a nappy-headed ho. At least that would have been factually accurate.

If Chris Rock had a show on Comedy Central called the “Nappy Headed Ho Show” nobody would say a word to him.

of course they're not... as a white person he can't make remarks about race. It's an anvil that's held over every white person. But they can demean themselves and their race and seemingly get away with it.

I was in LA during the Watts riots of 1965 (that date is close).
I remember driving down the freeway with some friends and 2 highways cruisers pulled up next to us and saw we weren't black and continued on. Farther up the freeway we passed a line of parked cars on the side of the freeway and black men and women being loaded into school buses... all black people in LA (all of LA) were under curfew... if out they were arrested.

I am 62 years old (probably close to Imus' age) and have seen terrible things done against that race of people. We need to remember where we came from and what we were and how they were treated. They (the blacks) need to stop calling themselves names (per Bill Cosby) and improve their lives thru education.

This is about the left sacrificing one of their own and then proceeding down the list of many other radio talk show hosts.

Himmler would be proud.

I still think the joke was taken out of context as a reference to the 1988 Spike Lee movie 'School Daze' (Wanna-bees vs. Jiggaboos dance off number) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlxI3-8BVKQ

It's almost bordering on laughable how out of touch Jackson and Sharpton are, or maybe they are purposely so...

Mike Greenberg, of the "Mike & Mike in the Morning" sports talk show, made an analogy to the character in the movie "Animal House" who says, "No one can treat our pledges like that. Only we can treat our pledges like that."

It’s all about the money. Imus’ bosses don’t want to risk losing ad dollars, so he’s toast. Doesn’t matter what’s right or wrong, just what brings in the dollars. Rappers make millions for the record companies BECAUSE they talk the way they do, so they’re not in trouble. Capitalism rocks.

The left is again exploiting an issue for their own ends. They are only interested in victims if it suits their goals.

I’m such a film nerd that I got that reference. I think the other problem with Imus’ remarks is that they just weren’t that witty or amusing. I remember one time Howard Stern had a Jeopardy parody contest to determine who was “really smarter” blacks or whites. THe white contestant had an Ivy League degree and the black contestant was a homeless bum. But all the questions were about street knowledge type stuff like dope and pimping so the black guy won easily. It was racially offensive as hell, but at least it was funny. Imus is just a mumbling drug addict.

It goes deeper than just educating themselves. What they said they wanted was EQUALITY...what they really wanted was SUPERIORITY...and judging from today’s double standard, they have gotten that. Making racial comments, whether its coming from a white person or a black person, doesnt matter.

This clip changes the meaning of the jogaboos vs. the wannabes comment made on Imus show. It’s a cultural reference.

I believe Rush did call her a “ho” when the scandal broke and there was a bit of a dust up. But the scandal died down when people realized that if a low rent stripper/hooker aint a ho, the word has no meaning.

Imus was simply attempting to compliment the Rutger's team in their own language of Ebonics. Aren' we told that this language is beautiful, and as relevant as any of the classic languages? Is it not taught in our colleges? If the team had been Spanish, would they have been offended if he said "Muy Bueno?"

The best I can figure is that Ebonics is beautiful if spoken by rappers and other hip-hop types, but should not be spoken by white people, as speaking to someone in the language they themselves have proclaimed to be beautiful and worthy of rigorous academic treatment is offensive. Go figure.

Ironically, Ebonics is taught at Rutgers.

I, as a young white woman, was in L A at the same time period. I was also one who supported the civil rights movement.

However, the reverse racism is really getting offensive.

It is the cracker so many persons of color disrespect who helped push the movement toward real results for everyone and the European Judeo-Christian mentality carried the principles by which it all came about.

It is time for respect to go both ways, but when it does not the response should be a little thicker skinned. We have to realize that people have a right to say almost anything in this country. I do not think we want to lose that becasue if we do, we lose our people power for everyone.

My take on this whole thing is the English language is NOW being split according to race.

I posted a comment at one time on this site and used the word "uppity" and immediately I was perceived as black. If "nappy haired ho" is reserved for use by only blacks then I agree that Ann Coulter is correct BUT we need more than a rule book we need many new dictionaries that are race specific.

This has gone waaaaay too far and I am tired of being hi-jacked in undefined ways by minority groups. It is time the white folk (if I can use that word) stand up to this crap.

It is a sad day when American Idol can be hi-jacked by the public for no good reason and when a person's career can be hi-jacked because of ill-chosen words that freedom of speech grants all of us.

This is not about racism--it is about words and who is allowed and who is NOT ALLOWED to use them.

Nothing in speech is as offensive as the racial remarks made by ‘Latino’ leaders, many of them professors on the tax payer dole. Where is the outrage about that?

Go here for audio!

http://www.ccir.net/ra.html

Samples:

# Armando Navarro at U.C. Riverside
“It means a transfer of power......”

# Art Torres’ Outrageous Quotes
...”187 is the last gasp of white America in California.”

# Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo’s Outrageous Remark in Chicago

# ‘Chicano National Guard’s’ Ricky Sierra
“It’s Time to Take Back What Is Ours!”

# ‘Brown Beret’s’ Augustin Cebeda at the July 4, 1996 Rally in Westwood, California
“...if anyone is going to be deported it’s gonna be YOU!”

# Mario Obledo (California Coalition of Hispanic Organizations) on the Tom Leykis Show
“...eventually we are going to take over all the political institutions of California.....”

# Mario Obledo, Co-founder of MALDEF, and Ray Briem
“...well if they don’t like Mexicans they ought to leave. They ought to go back to Europe.”

# Senator Hilda Solis’ - Claims that Illegals are Americans “whether we are legalized or not....”
Senator Solis is sponsoring an outrageous bill, SB-371, that would give illegal aliens the right to be issued drivers’ licenses in California.

# L.A. News Anchor on ‘Hispanic’ Attacks on Caucasian L.A.U.S.D. Teachers

# Jose Pescador-Osuna Claims Mexico is “Practicing Reconquista in California” (2/7/98).
“...even though I’m saying this part serious, part joking, I think we are practicing La Reconquista in California....”
“Reconquista” refers to the re-taking of the U.S. Southwest that Mexico lost in the Mexican-American War. Some Mexicans refer to this territory as “Aztlan”.

Are Imus Remarks Any Worse Than Some Rappers?

I think in today's PC climate, there are certain "rules" you have to follow :

1) It is OK to racially disparage people of your own "race" but not people NOT of your race. Hence using the word --- "Nigga" is fine, BUT ONLY IF YOU'RE BLACK, BUT NOT IF YOU'RE WHITE.

2) If you are to call people Ho's, don't BE SPECIFIC about it. Make it "general" as in --- "women I date are ho's", "women who come on to me are ho's". Imus' PC problem was this -- HE SPECIFICALLY TARGETED IDENTIFIABLE WOMEN. That's a no-no. Being general, tolerable, being specific, NOT ACCEPTABLE.

3) Minorities get more leeway in using racially insensitive terms than those in the majorities. I don't need to even explain why.

4) When you hide behind the word -- PARODY --- somehow, using racial ephithets or insulting words, become OK. Hence, rappers like Ludacris or EminEm can get away with it because they can always say that it's ART and PARODY and we shouldn't take them too seriously ( just as they themselves don't take it seriously).

Understanding this unspoken "rules" of society goes a long way towards explaining why Imus got crucified while rappers and even Al Sharpton get away with their remarks.

The Left has protected classes, people, groups that no one must criticize and all must pander to! The minorities are such and though crime, illegality, immorality is huge in their culture, crime rates, gangs, music and illigitimacy, no one may protest. If one does, that person could be in real danger of life and limb. See how they will now try to destroy Talk Radio.

I agree with you. There is something to be said about decency. However, if its O.K. for rappers to use this kind of language and make millions I see no reason a white person can't use the same language or do the blacks own the words and thus free speech belongs only to them?

Don't get me wrong, Imus should not have said what he did. I don't need to repeat all the indecent things many have said (Rosie O'Donnell comes immediately to mind) including blacks who did not lose their jobs. This is just more hype and more division but I guess if that is what the blacks want it will ruin their rap for them or they will have to admit to a double standard and the desire to not fit in. They can't have it both ways. Free speech is for everyone decent or not.

Whites can (and do) use such language.

But I, for example, cannot use such language ... and keep my job.

My employment (like Imus's, I'm sure) ... and, most likely, yours, ... depends upon my conformance to a variety of behavioural standards, ... including how I dress, speak, and use my time on the job.

There are jobs that I could work where I would have more freedom to use the type of language that some rappers (and Imus) have used ... but I probably would be making a great deal less money.

Jobs come with standards of on-the-job behaviour.

Imus's was no different.
