Did he file off the serial numbers? Without the serial numbers there’s no way to trace the guns to a specific gun dealer and purchaser. What if the guns used in the shooting were obtained illegally and had been used in other crimes before Cho came into their possession? Would law enforcement be able to trace the bullets to previous killings or crimes? Perhaps the package that NBC received documents those other crimes.

He probably used one of the Dremal tools found among his things.

And it is quite easy to recover a ground-off serial number, because the stamping process distorts the metal even below the surface. Most morons just remove enough material until they see flat metal, and stop. One then polishes that surface, smoothing it if needed, and uses acid to reveal the number. If you stipple or stamp the number first to obliterate it with more sever distortion that the numbers were stamped with, then grind away, they probably won’t be able to recover the number.

No way to trace the bullets. Only on TV.

CNN Pipeline just said that he made and mailed the package between the two shootings. Crazy.

I wonder how much of the contents of the package was made that day. Aside from the content that is time specific (ie., a newspaper with that day's date, timestamp on video, writing or talking about the events of that day), how do they determine how old a hand written paper or printed page is.

why did he obliterate the serial numbers on his weapons?

Because he thought of himself as a bad-ass, and thought it would be cool to break that rule, too.

but it will watched by millions. pure evil genius

I am afraid you are right fooman. How many more Cho's are out there and will idolize him once the video/writing is made fully public?

You said — “I want to know what’s in his ramblings. I still think there’s a RoP link somewhere.”

Oh gawwwd! I thought the ROP-ers (for Cho) were finally dead and buried. You mean there is still someone out there looking for the ROP-connection for this totally whacko nutjob?

Un-freakin-believable!

It seems to me that most all of the materials he sent to NBC are probably on his personal computer. If my assumption is correct, the authorities have known since Monday more about the killer than they have disclosed.

Now that NBC has the materials, it will be made public, something I’m not sure I agree with.

“Among the materials are 23 QuickTime video files showing Cho talking directly to the camera, Capus said. He does not name anyone specifically, but he talks at length about religion and his hatred of the wealthy.”

Unless he is part of a terrorist group that can still harm us, I don’t know if I want to see this either. It can’t do anything but give him the attention he wanted and hurt others.

There is no way he went to the USPS Post Office. If he had gone to the Post Office he would have been in line for six hours and never would have had time to do the other killings.

IOW, he didn't go "postal". Oh, wait! He did!

Other reports have said that Cho’s parents did NOT attempt suicide, that that report has no validity.

Another report indicated that at least one of the parents (mother, I think) may have been hospitalized due to the stress.

right. I am just saying we should respect the ability of people like this to do harm and try to prevent it.

But when we are successful at prevention, like bush since 911, people just pooh pooh the success.

And didn’t I read in the news recently that the only job Mary Mapes has managed to get was in the NBC Mail Room working on receiving materials and making copies?

AAAAAAAAAAGGHHHHHH!!!

he talks at length about religion and his hatred of the wealthy.

And no one wants MSM/DNC talking points associated with mass murder.

(Oddly, those who follow history find it easy to draw connections between socialism and mass murder!)

Except for stricter reporting and restriction on the mental illness issue, I wouldn’t worry about it this time.

You asked — “If this is so, why did he obliterate the serial numbers on his weapons?”

Well, just a guess on my part....

If he happened to have the weapons discovered before he carried out the plan, he might be able to say that he didn’t own them and didn’t know where they came from (being that there were other people around who had access to the same area). So, maybe it was from that angle that he was thinking.

It seems that he didn’t know that simply grinding it off wouldn’t do it. I hear that using a punch and obliterating it that way works. He must not have done enough research on the subject. Oh well...

But, nonetheless, he was under the assumption (anyway) that he could disguies the origin of the weapons, so that it wouldn’t be traced back to him. Thus, if they happened to be discovered ahead of time — he would *still* be able to carry off his attack — although at a later time, after things had “cooled down” (at least in his own head, he might have thought that).

And *that* would then fit the descriptions that you’ve been hearing about. He didn’t want to be caught *beforehand* — but rather go out in a blaze of glory after the fact.

Star Traveler

I know nothing about guns, but I thought I heard the comment on TV yesterday that the FBI or other authorities, had a way to raise the serial numbers.

I suppose it's possible if the serial numbers are stamped, which they probably are, as opposed to engraved/etched. Then again, hearing something on TV is probably but a notch or two above hearing something on television. Who knows if the person you heard on TV knows what they are talking about. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will chime in.
