Pro-Life Group Blasts Philadelphia Inquirer's Anti-Catholic Abortion Cartoon

Philadelphia, PA (LifeNews.com) -- The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper is coming under fire for a cartoon it ran following the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the federal partial-birth abortion ban. The cartoon entitled “Church and State” features the five Catholic members of the high court wearing bishop miters.

Joseph Cella, the head of Fidelis, a leading Catholic pro-life group, says the newspaper, "has breached the line of reasonable editorial commentary. This cartoon is venomous, terribly misleading and, blatantly anti-Catholic."

"We call on the Inquirer to repudiate the cartoon’s anti-Catholic sentiment," Cella told LifeNews.com in a statement.

Cella says the cartoon suggests that the Supreme Court decision to uphold the ban on partial birth abortion was a result of the Catholic Church influencing the votes of the five Catholic Justices on the Supreme Court, who are portrayed as Catholic Bishops.

"The Supreme Court did not ‘follow marching orders’ from the Vatican or the Bishops in the United States. Instead, the Court deferred to deliberative judgment of the people's elected representatives protected by the Constitution,” Cella said.

“By exposing this outrageously intolerant cartoon, we hope to contain future attacks on judges of faith, particularly during any future confirmation hearings which will likely prove to be the most contentious in history," he added.

Cella said the Inquirer's cartoon resembles the attack on Judge Bill Pryor, who was mocked for having “deeply-held” religious beliefs as a Catholic. Pryor faced sharply abusive rhetoric before he was finally confirmed to the federal bench in 2003.

"The Inquirer’s insinuation that a Catholic judge cannot act dispassionately and apply the law is an affront to all judges of faith, and smacks of anti-Catholic bigotry and elitism of the worst kind," he concluded.

If she were nominated, the democrap assassination of her life and sterling character would make the term ‘borking’ become ‘browning’. I don’t get this one. Where you define the beginning of life is a philosophical question, not a religious one. As far as I can tell, the Bible does not address this question, and there are plenty of pro-life athiests.

I don't understand the stance of some pro-choice folks on this issue. What does any religion have to do with banning this procedure? It is barbaric and is nothing more than a way to get a dead baby....retroactive birth control.
Even Dem pro-choice advocates voted to pass this measure in Congress and the Supremes did the right thing by declining to rule on it.
Any human being with an ounce of brain matter and anything close to a conscience should be outraged that such a practice has ever been performed in this country.
Burning at the stake is more humane.

I've just read the dialog, and if there were ever an example of moral relativism, Rosie O'Donnel drips with it.

My goodness... It's all about choice for the mother, and not a single thought given to the life of the boy or girl that is destroyed in the process.

Rosie is so factually wrong on almost everything she says, that one knows hardly where to begin.

She is sick, and really is in trouble in regards to her soul. Apparently though, this too is her choice.

Dick Durbins

A Presbyterian friend called out to Durbin (during a local campaign appearance for Obama in '04) that he should repent because of all the babies he's killed, and that he should stop calling himself a Catholic until he does. The look on Durbin's face and the rage in his voice when he yelled back something about how we shouldn't be judging him...you'd think he'd been accused of child molesting.

You know, the really fun part was before he got there, watching all the local Dems freak out over our "40,000 dead babies--Are you proud?" and "[Picture of a baby] > [picture of a hamster]" signs. My wife still can get me to fall on the floor laughing by doing her impression of the combination Valley Girl/Abortion activist who came up to harass her about the hamster sign. "So, you admit there's never been a a situation where he had to choose between saving a baby and saving a hamster, but you think that sign's fair?" One guy kept coming out of the library (where the Obama campaign speech was going to be) to hit us with "zingers" that were horribly lame and then my wife would smack him down mercilessly. An example:

"Hey, let's all go to the sex club like Jack Ryan!"

"No, you go on ahead, sir. We're not into that."

A number of the dems came past and answer the "Proud Yet?" sign by saying they were indeed proud that their party protected the right to choose. I told them that being proud to be murderers was a pretty sad place to be. Some of them were already ticked because they had walked past my Presbyterian friend to get there, and he was asking each person who came by him if they knew how a PBA is performed.

All in all, it was some of the best Freeping I've ever done...even better than the time I was out in front of Dem HQ with a Kerry sign and a Viet Cong costume. And I guarantee that the folks at the Keyes rally in October had more fun (even though we knew we were losing horribly) than any of these poor Dem clowns.
