The Birth of the ‘Breck Girl’ Story Line
The New York Times ^ | April 23, 2007 | ADAM NAGOURNEY

The tale of John Edwards’ $400 haircuts may have ended – or at least his campaign hopes it ended – when Mr. Edwards told Iowans on Friday that he was embarrassed by the episode. It arguably began four years ago this weekend with a story in The New York Times about the White House’s strategy for dealing with prospective Democratic challengers to President Bush.

In the last paragraph of that story, which I wrote with a colleague, Richard W. Stevenson, an unnamed “Bush associate” was quoted as referring to Mr. Edwards as “the Breck Girl of politics.” Another Bush adviser, again unnamed, was quoted as saying of Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, “he looks French.”

In both instances, we were attempting to flesh out for readers the White House’s plans for discrediting prospective Democratic opponents. Both people quoted were at the senior levels of the Bush political operation. And in both cases – as Mr. Kerry and Mr. Edwards could certainly attest by

The term, “Breck Girl” has been used by Rush often and may have been invented by him.

Actually, left-wing columnist Molly Ivins used that epithet on Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison more than 15 years ago, back when Kay was put on trial by Ronnie Earle (the DA who took down Tom DeLay) for the same "offense" Clinton's people pooh-poohed when Al Gore was accused of making political phone calls on a White House phone. Kay's staff were accused of using her state office phones on her senatorial campaigns -- so Earle indicted Kay. (Someone needs to make him go "crunch.")

Ivins sneered that the people of Texas would never find guilty any woman who wore "Breck hair and Peter Pan collars."

Keep in mind that Adam, the reporter on this story for the Times, is the same guy that Bush referred to as an *sshole," and Cheney replied, "Big Time." Note that the reporter apparently does not read his own newspaper.

Hate to correct you, Congressman, sir... But the "*sshole/Big Time" comment was directed at Adam Clymer.

"The term, “Breck Girl” has been used by Rush often and may have been invented by him."

That was the first I ever heard it used.

My memory is that the "A-hole/Big Time" incident was directed at Adam Clymer, not this Adam. For months on FReep, the name "Clymer" was substituted for the word "A-hole" and everyone knew the deal.

“Was that a mistake on our part? Perhaps.”

What a piece of NYtTimes arrogance.

Those epithets were around way before the NYTimes reported them, here, on talk radio, etc.

In NYTimes world, everything revolves around them.

Start with the question of why they would lie about this particular point, and you may get at the truth,....

That's an old CIA maxim about dealing with political propaganda, particularly Communist propaganda, and political statements in general.

It is depressingly revealing of what The New York Times has become, that nowadays it has to be read like Pravda was in the 1950's. It is now completely a tool, dominated by Alinskyite politickers and agitators.

Jay Leno put Sir Lovely's coif into perspective a couple of nights ago. According to Jay,

"I talked about this last night. John Edwards got a $400 haircut. Now the latest is, Hillary Clinton may have spent $200 getting her back waxed."

“Start with the question of why they would lie about this particular point”

Like the closed system of Marxism which can only see all events revolving around itself, NYTimesism is much the same.

1. They believe they were the conduit, the origin of the “Breck Girl” meme.

2. They believe if it wasn’t for themselves, the Breck Girl meme would have died.

Yep, y’all are right and I’m wrong. I had my Adam-*ssholes mixed up. This one probably is one also, but Bush and Cheney did not say so.

A thousand pardons.

This guy is also a “Clymer” but that “a-hole” incident did indeed involve the original “Clymer” who gave birth to the synonym for “MSM vapid leftist a-hole” which is to say “a real CLYMER”........... two different Adams, one DBM leftist mentality of dishonest propaganda.

Disraeli wasn't the only one.

Trollope got after him too.

He looks fairly soapy to me . . . but that's part of the occupational qualification for a bishop. At least an Anglican one.

The photo is by "Lewis Carroll" (C.L. Dodgson)

Obviously another congressional investigation is warranted. *eyeroll*

A lot of people get embarrassed when they are caught.

That picture has been around for quite awhile. Would anyone care to tell me if it’s real or photoshop?

The most disturbing part is that it COULD be real!
