MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - A woman denied a teaching degree on the eve of graduation because of a MySpace photo has sued the university.

Millersville University instead granted Stacy Snyder a degree in English last year after learning of her Web-published picture, which bore the caption “Drunken Pirate.”

“I dreamed about being a teacher for a long time,” said Snyder, 27, who now works as a nanny. Story continues below ↓advertisement

The photo, taken at a 2005 Halloween party, shows Snyder wearing a pirate hat while drinking from a plastic “Mr. Goodbar” cup. It was posted on her own MySpace site.

Although Snyder apologized, she learned the day before graduation that she would not be awarded an education degree or teaching certificate.

Jane S. Bray, dean of the School of Education, accused Snyder of promoting underage drinking, the suit states.

Um, this is vaguely disturbing. She was participating in legal drinking activities, and her MySpace picture shows her doing so - she lost her teaching certificate for this?

And she was 26 at the time. Its not like she was 18 and doing jager bombs off another girls stomach.

This would be disturbing if true but I want to hear the whole story.

This sounds like a story planted by her lawyer on the trial lawyer channel (NBC). Remember that they had that story about exploding gas tanks (only they had to fake the explosion for good TV footage).

If her picture resembles this...she's not guilty.

I’m not going to discuss the “ethics” of it, but college students better wake up. They are leaving a “profile” on many online sites, i.e. MySpace, Facebook, gaming forums, etc, and employers are checking the sites before they consider hiring them. Then the kid wonders why he didn’t get the job.

If colleges didn’t award degrees to people who acted like idiots in public and did embarrassing things, we wouldn’t have any graduates (including me). Now I think people are making a big mistake with My Space. I have friends and family that are so desperate for attention that they are willing to show everyone who will watch how they behave at their worst (like you might behind closed doors with your close friends).

So you don’t have the good sense to know that everyone in the world isn’t your friend. OK, not grounds for being denied a degree you otherwise earned. Maybe grounds for not being eventually hired, but that’s for employers to decide.

If this party was two years ago, she was 25. Old enough to drink. I’d sure like to hear the schools side of this story.

OK, so she gets photographed drinking legally. (she was 25 or 26 at the time)

How is this promoting underage drinking?????

I know i am blonde, but I am definitely missing something here.

This will only go on for a few more years, until the realization that if you eliminate everyone with an embarassing picture or statement on-line, there's nobody left in the country and people won't care anymore.

..“I dreamed about being a teacher for a long time,”

You have taught a very important lesson. Don't post pictures of yourself being a fool when you want a job setting an example for children.

Although Snyder apologized...

Not quite sure why she needed to apologize. But then again, I was born in a time when we had more freedom.

My nephew is a student a Millersville. The university warned them that if they so much as received a DUI conviction that they wouldn’t receive their teacher’s certificates. This story is entirely believable based on that.
