Is Global Warming a Sin?

[from the May 14, 2007 issue]

In a couple of hundred years historians will be comparing the frenzies over our supposed human contribution to global warming to the tumults at the latter end of the tenth century as the Christian millennium approached. Then as now, the doomsters identified human sinfulness as the propulsive factor in the planet's rapid downward slide. Then as now, a buoyant market throve on fear. The Roman Catholic Church sold indulgences like checks. The sinners established a line of credit against bad behavior and could go on sinning. Today a world market in "carbon credits" is in formation. Those whose "carbon footprint" is small can sell their surplus carbon credits to others less virtuous than themselves.

The modern trade is as fantastical as the medieval one. There is still zero empirical evidence that anthropogenic production of carbon dioxide is making any measurable contribution to the world's present warming trend. The greenhouse fearmongers rely on unverified, crudely oversimplified models to finger mankind's sinful contribution--and carbon trafficking, just like the old indulgences, is powered by guilt, credulity, cynicism and greed.

Wow. Cockburn is about as far left as they come, and he’s crying “The Emperor Has No Clothes!”

Could the tide be turning against this Global Warming fraud?

It’s a Sin to tell a lie. So, yes.

The best part was mention of the 30% drop in CO2 emissions due to the Great Depression that didn’t even make a dent in the rise of atmospheric CO2.

As the new global religion gains strength, The Goracle will advance to a higher plain of existance. I wonder who the saints of this new faith will be? Will they have Bingo and pot luck dinners?

I'm noticing the same phenomenon. GW has taken off like no one expected. Perhaps some semi-sane lefties are realizing that they may have overstepped on this one.

This appeared in The Nation? What next, an appreciation of The Wealth of Nations? A fawning profile of G.W. Bush? A vicious critique of Marxism?

If the GOP congress and president had offered the US a reasonable energy policy the GW movement would not be quite where it is. Even people who are very skeptical realize that it would be a darn good idea to use less imported Arab oil. So they go along.

I realize that many experts believe that global warming caused by human activity is a fact.
Whenever I read or hear the opinions of experts, I am reminded of a quote attributed to Robert Cecil, 3rd Marquis of Salisbury, the last peer to be Prime Minister of Great Britain, which illustrates the dangers of relying on expert opinion.
“If one listens to physicians, nothing is healthy. If one listens to soldiers, nothing is safe. If one listens to clergymen, nothing is innocent.”

Is Global Warming a Sin?

No, but expelling warm air onto the pews in church might be.

The left did proclaim after their Gore could not steal an election they had religion tooooooo. Now it seems to be Thou shalt not drive or Thou shalt not use more than one square per privy stop, unless you stop in a Gorism ticket booth to purchase your your pollution ticket.

Wonder what ‘global heaven’ is like????

Over the top belief in Global Warming is definitely a religion to the left. We should continue to promote that fact of it being a religion to them....

Then let the other shoe drop and say that we must maintain separation of church and state.
We cannot allow government mandate in any form or fashion the ‘participation’ in this religion by forcing titheing, i.e., taxes. And no forced penance, i.e., penalties etc.

Yeah, seeing Cockburn's name on the by-line surprised me too. Maybe old-time leftists saved their credulity for Socialism and Communism, while modern leftists prefer to express their desire for control over other people through Environmentalism.

What a damning article!

The earth isn’t getting warmer because of increased CO2, the earth has increased CO2 because the earth is getting warmer.
