McCain: Global warming is fact, must be addressed [hurl alert]
Quad City Times ^ | May 7, 2007 | Ed Tibbetts

Posted on 05/07/2007 4:22:06 PM PDT by jdm

Republican presidential candidate John McCain said today that global climate change is real and Americans must deal with its effects.

"Climate change is a fact," the Arizona senator told a crowd this morning gathered under a large tent outside the Iowa Machine Shed restaurant in Davenport.

McCain argued for a system that would cap emissions but allow individual companies to trade credits, within that cap, to put greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. A similar type of arrangement took place in the 1990s to battle acid rain. Several Democratic presidential candidates also approve of such an approach.

"We can have an ongoing debate, and should, about how serious is it, but it's happening," McCain said.

McCain, who has been most noted in this presidential campaign for his steadfast support of the Iraq War, made climate change a prominent part of his stump speech. He said the country should reduce its dependence on foreign oil and move toward renewable energy sources, as well as nuclear power.

His unequivocal embrace of the belief that global warming is occurring is striking given there is significant skepticism within his party that it is or that human activities are causing it. In an interview, McCain said, "if you want to ignore the findings of literally every reputable scientific organization in America and the world, that's your privilege."

As many as 250 people grouped under a tent outside the Machine Shed to hear McCain, who was making his second trip to the Quad-Cities this year.

The senator continued to take a forceful approach to Iraq, arguing that while the war was "very, very badly" mishandled there is a new general and a "good strategy" now in place.

He warned that if Americans withdraw from Iraq precipitously, terrorists "will follow us home."

McCain also dismissed the idea of a short-term funding proposal for the war. In the wake of President Bush's veto of Congress' war spending bill last month, Democrats are considering a new measure that would fund the war, but only through the summer, when they can get a report from the top general in Iraq, Gen. David Patraeus, about whether the surge in troops is having an impact.

"It's a gross distortion of the powers of the Congress of the United States," McCain said.

McCain also was making a trip to Muscatine today to campaign there.

Oh my goodness. McQueeg must've bought a lot of trade credits given how many brain farts he's releasing into the atmosphere.

Put aside for a moment the issue of who or what causes global warming. Questions arise.

Q: If sea levels rise and threaten Eastern towns, what should we do?
A: Push them into the sea faster

Q: If sea levels rise in the SW, what should we do?
A: Pump the sea water into the desert. Half of it will evaporate into cloud cover and rain that keeps the desert alive. Half the water will percolate into the deep aquifer and be de-salinized in the process. The fresh water can then be pumped to Phoenix.

Q:
A: This could be fun. Why does this issue have to be so serious?

He is a true believer.

He doesn’t hide the carbon credits angle,

Democrat pres. candidates know that that’s a scam,

And it’s in their bills,

And they talk of clean air, etc., but not the carbon trading,

There is only one other fool, a true believer, who thinks this can pass muster in open debate,

And that is John Kerry.

That’s because they don’t have the guts to go out and speak about real problems that real people have. You can bet none of these guys in Washington really give a darn about global warming, hoax, that’s why they are so concerned about it,it’s a non-issue. Secure the border people! Help to find a way so that people in this country do not have to choose between food and medicine and I am NOT talking about illegal aliens! I wish this country would try to have as much concern with their citizens who have real problems. For heavens sake why can’t Mexico take care of their own people. And how many billions of dollars go to Muslim countries that hate our guts.

Now, as for you're presidential aspirations.......

Would you just shut you're pie-hole. You, sir, are mentally unbalanced.

Now STFU, and go away. You ARE NOT a republican, quit lying to yourself and us.

Do yourself a big favor, Sen. - retire, now.

It's embarrassing to watch, Sen. McCain.

No doubt about it. McCain talked about “climate change” at the Conservative Party conference in the UK last year when he spoke there.

He fully embraced the idea of doing something about it. Of course we the people get to pay for the folly.

Why thank you John, I think I will take you up on your kind offer, particularly since I have read and understand the phony science behind the 'carbon dioxide is killing us' hoax and it appears that you haven't.

McStain lost my vote a long time ago because of his support for amnesty. That said, I would like to see a candidate talk about climate change with an open mind and consider what ALL of the scientists have to say instead of asking us to buy Goracle credits to assuage our 'guilt'.

Climate change is a fact. The notion that it is caused by human energy use is at best surmise based on computer models of a chaotic dynamical system (a worthless enterprise) and at worst anti-capitalist propaganda. The notion that it is certain to be a continued warming trend is flat silly.

The correct response to climate change is to funnel research dollars into developing food crops that will grow in hotter wetter climates, hotter drier climates, colder wetter climates and colder drier climates than we now grow food in, development of irrigation systems to move water into areas which seem to be developing persistent droughts, and doing advance planning to deal with coastline changes and refugees (whether from desertifying areas or glaciers). Of course none of these ideas destroy capitalism or empower the government to interfere in everyone’s daily life like mandating compact flourescent light bulbs or taxing SUV’s or whatever the lastest enthusiasm on the left proposes as a ‘global warming’ cure.

GW MAY be a reality. But THE question is whether it is from manmade causes — or (far more likely since the Martian icecap seems to ALSO be shrinking and I don’t think there are any men on mars) is it from increased SOLAR ACTIVITY?

If the latter is the case, just what in the hell can Algore and his sycophants do about it?
