I agree. You cannot spend all that time in a Viet Cong prison and not be mentally affected. Your brain will just never work the same again after all that pain and stress given over years.
I know this may sound harsh, but being shot down and captured does not make you a hero. Lots of guys had that happen to them in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam etc. The heros were the ones who tried to escape and some made it. I just never saw the hero designation being true simply by virtue of being a POW.
