Former Gov. Mitt Romney yesterday turned the tables on the Rev. Al Sharpton yesterday, lambasting him as an example of bigotry in America after the controversial cleric insulted Mormonism by saying Romneys White House bid will be defeated by voters who really believe in God.
Romney responded to the remark with uncharacteristic anger, firing off a series of heated statements accusing Sharpton of perpetuating the bigotry he so often rails against. Sharpton most recently led the charge to fire radio host Don Imus for racist remarks.
Al Sharpton made a bigoted comment, Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said yesterday. It is not at all consistent with the principles of religious tolerance and religious freedom that we all cherish as Americans.
Romney, who has faced repeated questions and criticism over his Mormon faith, also attacked Sharptons comments during an appearance on MSNBC. I can only, hearing that statement, wonder whether there is not bigotry that still remains in America, he said. Thats an extraordinary thing for someone to say.
Sharpton made the controversial remark during a debate Monday with atheist author Christopher Hitchens in New York. According to a tape of the event, Sharpton said, As for the one Mormon running for office, those that really believe in God will defeat him anyway, so dont worry about that. Thats a temporary situation.

I think that the “Reverend” Al is about to experience something unique: A white politician that won’t back down to a race-baiting scam artist phony “preacher” that incites riots & solicits shakedowns. Governor Romney has nothing to lose, really. Liberals and blacks who are aghast at his words to Sharpton weren’t going to vote for a republican, anyway.
Can't happen soon enough!
Now that would be a unique situation wouldnt it. Of course Romney right now has only accused Sharpton of a religious bigotry, when Sharpton is also a racial bigot and not the only famous one at that.
I wonder where we find religious tolerance in the BIble?
We can love and minister to anyone, regardless of their beliefs. We can even provide their practical needs, even when they won't agree with us or convert.
But tolerating religion, today, means saying all religions are equal.
Not gonna do it.
Sounds like “The” reverund got a hearty bitc# slap.
Sharpton has already pulled his race card. This will all blow over in less that a day.
Yep. It’s the media reaction that drives the outrage.
For Sharpton they’d dance.
This...they’ll drop.
Sharpton’s supporters, like Alan Colmes, says Sharpton was referring to a comment by Hitchens. I did not hear what Hitchens had to say. Anyone?
You said: But tolerating religion, today, means saying all religions are equal.

That is a liberal bastardization of the term “tolerance,” arising from the gay rights movement. Tolerance doesn’t mean condonation or agreement with that which is tolerated. Tolerance to me infers disagreement while co-existing. I know liberals view it differently, but they are simply wrong...again.
Good. What goes around, comes around. It’s about time sharpton got bit by his own constant accusations.
Sharpton should be fired!!!!! :-)
Sharptom manages to claim center stage, again. Should tell us a lot about the warped definition of news by a sensationalist press.
