This is a topical thread, considering our discussion over on the NC board.

I’m normally a fast driver, but if I saw that in my mirror, my response would be to flash my 38.

I am definitely not in favor of banning cell phone use in cars, as a number of states have done, but some people (**cough** women) have to wise up about how they use them.

Really, and honestly, do you move over and let the faster vehicle pass or do you think to yourself that you’re going fast enough and the lunatic behind you should either slow down, or find his own way around you?

You move over. A little courtesy won't kill you, and it's the right thing to do. If you're not passing anyone, and you're not in stop-and-go traffic, you have no business being in the far left lane.

I think everyone should slow down to 55 miles per hour and stop burning fuel at a rate we all can’t afford. The savings in fuel would necessitate a drop in price.

If we are buying gas, we "can" afford the price, by definition. If we couldn't afford it we couldn't, thus wouldn't, buy it.

p.s. The modest reduction in demand that would result from everyone in the U.S.A. driving 55mph would make virtually zero dent in the world price of oil, thus zero dent in the price of gasoline. You may have heard of other large nations. China and India for example. Well it may interest you to learn that oil is a commodity, and those other nations purchase oil too.

OMG...

Please tell me how much I need to contribute to become a *GOLD* member! I’d also like to sit on the board.

If there was ever one good thing about France, it’s that cops there frequently pull drivers over for slowpoking in the left lane...it’s a moving violation of ‘obstructing traffic flow’.

Not sure about the rest of Europe, but I know they enforce it en Francais.

Unless and until this becomes law, rather than a recommendation, and drivers are ticketed for slowing down the Fast Lane, the practice will continue unabated.

It is the law in many states. So is the failure of lane change signalling and not using turn signals in general. The cops no longer enforce the law.

And why should they? We don't arrest illegal aliens either.

That's the way it works in Germany. You can drive in just the middle lane of a deserted three-lane Autobahn and they will ticket you if they catch you. I've seen it.

The rule: You stay in the right lane unless you're passing.

Complementary rule: You cannot pass on the right.

(of course all that goes out the window during a heavy traffic jam)

Of course, technically it’s not the fast lane, it’s the passing lane. But the end result is the same.

That argument was made by those who are in the long haul trucking industry, which continues to have the 55 speed limit imposed on them. Sorry, try again.

Good point. There’s nothing quite like trying to pass a BST (Big Scary Truck) who is squeezing into your lane, while another rig roars up from behind. Maybe it’s the little white pills that makes ‘em mean.

And in actuality I get better gas mileage at 70 than I do at 55

BS

That would make more sense if it said:

There you are trapped by a solid double yellow line to your right, a concrete wall to your left, and a car doing 65 right in front of you. Meanwhile, traffic in the other lanes is zippin by at 80-85.

Let’s say you are going 15 MPH over the speed limit in the left lane, there is no one ahead of you. In your rear view mirror you see someone rapidly approaching. Really, and honestly, do you move over and let the faster vehicle pass or do you think to yourself that you’re going fast enough and the lunatic behind you should either slow down, or find his own way around you?

I move over and let the faster vehicle pass me, if at all possible.

Rule of thumb: If someone is behind you, and going faster than you, or prevented from going faster than you ONLY because you are in front of them, then you are in the wrong lane and need to move to the right. (if traffic allows, of course)

In my experience, those that complain the most about slower drivers in the left lane are also the least likely to cede the lane when faster traffic comes up behind them.

Well consider me a counterexample.

I was driving behind a pickup on the way home a few weeks ago, and thought the driver was DUI. The road is full of curves(I think they followed a snake trail when they built the road) and this guy was over the lane dividing stripes one minute and then almost in the ditch.

I followed him for over five miles and was afraid to pass, as were the other drivers. I wasn’t in that big a hurry to have a crash with him, so I just followed at a safe distance. As we came into a small town, he hung up his cell phone. After that, he drove normally.
