That "Bivouac of the Dead" is beautiful, I never saw it before.

Memorial Day

  It was enough to make us weep,
half a dozen veterans of the last great war
looking like fading away,
followed by the high school band,
booming bravely into adulthood.
Next a squad in Civil War uniform,
harking back to the source of the holiday,
a fratricide that seems today
almost as if it occurred in another country,
not just another century.
Then making up in creativity
what our town lacks in size
a retired Humvee
with a small girl in back
wearing a grunt style cap
and waving mechanically;
vintage cars,
big ones from a century ago
with wooden spokes
and other vestiges of their carriage genes,
still boxy ones from the 20s,
the streamlined 30s,
the fishtailed 50s,
a couple of Mustangs, an early Corvette;
then the fire engines, big and bigger,
like armor-plated rhinos,
our town’s brigade riding old fashioned red,
others yellow,
sage green from a well-heeled nearby town;
delegations of Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies,
one scout troop with a five-piece band
trying like twenty-five;
a motorcycle club,
plenty of paunch and gray hair,
and, though some ponytails,
suburban angels rather than Hell’s.
Finally a platoon of kids
all safely helmeted,
one tireless on a pogo stick
others on scooters and bikes
and even a few on tricycles,
training for future wars.

Richard Greene

Am starting to feel better, thanks. You reminded me I need to wash our back porch down which is coated with pollen and mildew. Will need to use clorox on the mildew and dread that since it's so hard on my sinuses.

Do you have a picture of the Memorial Rose?

You don’t wanna miss it. Everything was in early growth when it’s lime green, as time goes on the green gets darker. It’s a very special time in that area when the earth comes back to life. Be sure to go in May.

Here's a photo. The pictures don't do it justice. It's neat how the buds are such a dark color to what the rose opens to. The contrast of buds with flowers is very nice. It's really hardy too. I had it in my last yard and just loved it.

Sometimes when the pollen is this bad, I get bronchitis. Maybe we should wear a mask when cleaning it. Do you think that could really help. I don't look forward to cleaning it up either.

That's such a lovely soft pink.

Don't think the mask would help, I usually have to take an antibiotic after cleaning up outdoors, only problem is I just finished taking one for a cold.

She didn’t like the leash, she wanted to go hunting. There is wildlife all over that area. The deer are like pets there, you can walk up and feed them, it’s a protected area.

The Scorpion’s Sting

Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? —Proverbs 6:27

Aesop tells the ancient story of a boy hunting for locusts. The lad had caught quite a few when he saw a scorpion. Mistaking it for a locust, he reached out his hand to take it. The scorpion showed his stinger and said, “If you had but touched me, my friend, you would have lost me, and all your locusts too!”

There are some things you cannot embrace without losing what you have in the process.

King Solomon used a word picture of fire instead of a scorpion as he warned his son against the dangers of sexual sin (Prov. 6:27-29). As a wise father, he wanted his son to know that in this wonderful, dangerous world there are not only flowers and songbirds but also scorpions and fires.

Solomon’s warnings in the Proverbs were not just about sexual immorality. Together with the rest of the Bible, such insights help us to understand the wisdom of an eternal God who loves us far more than our own mothers and fathers do. His Word also points us to the One who can help us even if we have “grabbed a scorpion” or “built a fire in our lap.”

Life offers us choices. Christ graciously offers us forgiveness for what is past, and wisdom for what yet lies ahead.

Search out in me all hidden sin,
And may Thy purity within
So cleanse my life that it may be
A temple wholly fit for Thee. —Smith

The lessons of life are best learned when Christ is your teacher.
