WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration and key congressional Democrats and Republicans stepped up their efforts to sell a broad immigration compromise Thursday as lawmakers braced for a public backlash at home.
"Many Americans are rightly skeptical about immigration reform," President Bush said in a Rose Garden news conference. "This bill provides the best chance to reform our immigration system and help us make certain we know who's in our country and where they are."

Read my lips, NO NEW TAXES.
That sound you hear is the National Democrats popping champaign corks.
You are so right. I keep hearing how people are going to take out Senator Graham in the next election and I practically laugh out of my seat because I don’t think they realize how difficult it is to do unless you want a Democrat in there.
It doesn’t grant amnesty, but immediately allows lawbreakers to stay in the country.
I agree with this and the admin should understand that nothing will work until the borders are secure. However, tax amnesty is a deal breaker too.
Oh I know. I just can’t believe two Republican Presidents in the history of the U.S. are bringing this up. In 1986 it was President Reagan and now President Bush....Makes you wonder about those eight year terms...if we had one six year term both President Reagan and Bush would not be able to do this. Makes ya go hum...
The American people have found they can no longer trust either the President or any of their congress critters.
I have thirty silver coins that I will donate.
“What is wrong with our presidents.”
They only pay attention to us when they run for office.
“One doesnt know the meaning of is.
Another cant see a pig in a poke to save his reputation.”
Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenberg, Ronald Reagan and perhaps Harry Truman were the only great Presidents in the 20th Century up to the present. They had their faults - no one is perfect. But their hearts and minds were in the right place - which is NOT what you can say for the rest of of them, including the current incumbent.
Check out this web site, heard the site owner on KFI640am last night:
>>Pardon me, stakeholders.
They will be the extralegal enforcers of all the splendid laws our Demopublican rulers have in store for us.
“As I have said from time to time and stand by my statement. Presidents should ONLY be elected for one six year term.”
I agree. President 6, Congress 4 and that’s it.

What is he smoking? Why do supposedly serious, educated, responsible people believe that persons already demonstrated to be scofflaws will suddenly have a change of heart and voluntarily put their collective neck in a noose?
The policy itself is almost an afterthough compared to the obviously unworkable structure and methods used to "administrate" the lawless. If the WH launched a program to count the number of leaves on every tree it would stand an equal chance of failure.
Visions of Minitrue.
Look ahead. Has anyone remarked about where legalizing these non-amnesty’d folks will lead. Let me suggest the next fight will be universal health care. And then we become a socialized third world nanny state.
I realize that technically, amnesty means to grant a pardon and of course no politician would be so foolish as to use the word "pardon" in this case.
But ... here's how the American people have decided if it is amnesty or not:
Does it reward or punish people for breaking the law?
If the answer is "reward" (and how can it be anything else), it is amnesty.
So let's stop with the semantics and parsing. We used to have a president who spent a lot of time parsing his statements and actions. We didn't like him very much.
McLame is the WORST. He was on Hannity yesterday, and I was yelling at the radio. (luckily I was alone in my car).
McLame was pointing at the [unenforceable, and will NOT be enforced] “punishments” to say that this bill was not amnesty for illegals.
After I had finished I asked her if their phones were busy,if a large percentage of the calls she's gotten are about amnesty and if a large percentage were for or against the bill. She said that she's not at liberty to be specific but she assured me that "you're not alone" in opposition to this bill.

Does not even matter to them because on Hagel is up for reelection in 2008. That is the biggest shame. They are going to get away with this because by the time they are up for election, this will probably be a dead issue or long forgotten and I am not talking about FREEPERS because we have a great way of keeping up with “bad” things that they do but the SHEEPLE don’t pay attention or remmber.
I just sent Senator Lugar an e-mail: “No! Bad senator!”
If I wanted a `knuckle-head’ for a senator, I’d move to (the great state of) Massachusetts . . .
>>Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenberg, Ronald Reagan and

You must be joking.
I would have picked Coolidge, Harding, and Reagan.
Teddy Roosevelt: federal reserve board, income taxation, popular election of senators .....don't believe he was great at all. In fact, he goes on the top 10 worst presidents list.
This is awful. Why does he continue to insult conservatives?
TR created BIG government Republicanism .... Harry Truman was a New Deal/Fair Deal liberal who ran from office .... Reagan was great .... Ike was near great. Outside of Silent Cal --- Calvin Coolidge -- the rest of the 20th century Presidents weren't good leaders.
Dubya is deadwrong on his support for liberal immigration reform. The process allows illegals to become legal and thats amnesty.
Btw, its Dwight Eisenhower, not Dwight Eisenberg. ;^)

“how difficult it is to do unless you want a Democrat in there.”
I have long been a straight ticket Republican (ever since Reagan).
If a Democrat is against this amnesty, he gets my vote.
Am-nes-ty: the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals.
It gives them TAX AMNESTY! That alone is enough to make me FURIOUS. I dont want to get started on all the other things about it that are sickening
I haven’t heard that part of it...can’t you explain?
Lets assume the sellout passes and Bush signs it. Sure there will be millions of newly legalized “citizens”, but what’s going to stop them from coming on in the way they are now? I doubt a small partial fence is going to get the job done.
Am I also expected to believe that if an illegal doesn’t qualify for the amnesty they are just going to pack up and go back home? I don’t see it happening.
No, it doesn't.
The "best chance to reform our immigration system" is for you to do your *^@$#)@ job, and enforce the law.
And together, they do NOT = enough of a reason to back this Bill who's fence first provisions will end up just being another law that insists on a fence that'll never be built.
compromising with criminals. Giving them rights, medical care, hud housing, welfare benes, and a free education isn’t good enough. They want us to hand the country over to them and disappear from te planet.
pig + lipstick = pig
“I havent heard that part of it...cant you explain?”

Gotta part with the big guy on this one. For everything he has gotten right, he is taking the wrong approach on illegal immigration.
The millions of poor, Mexican illegal aliens provide an excellent way to measure how well your immigration enforcement is working. If they are unable to support themselves in the USA and move back to Mexico, the enforcement is working. And since they will move back home on their own, their is no need to deport the majority of them. In this light, granting them legal status makes no sense. In fact, it places no part in “comprehensive” reform.
“This bill provides the best chance to reform our immigration system and help us make certain we know who’s in our country and where they are.”
This Bill has nothing to do with immigration...and everything to do with giving amnesty to illegal aliens who are NOT immigrants but worse than burglars..
If the provision of this Bill is intended to “help us make certain we know who’s in our country and where they are” why are illegal aliens being rewarded for being found and identified?
Would it not behoove the government to penalize the illegal aliens and not celebrate them?
What message does this send to those REAL immigrants who have applied to enter our country the correct way...by asking permission and fulfilling all the requirements?
Could it be..You are not important? you are not welcome? You are just a stupid chump? Wait in line longer..you know how to do that?
As an immigrant, I have not answers for the injustice that is wrapped up in this fallacy of an Amnesty Bill...
For more the past week I’ve felt like the senators pushing this are kicking me in the guts...
Ann Coulter brought this up on Hannity last night (Hannity was not happy.) She said, "I would love to be an illegal so I can stop paying taxes, too." It may not be an exact quote, but close.
Funny you should use that picture, because he granted amnesty to that turkey. It seems the president loves to grant amnesty!
Well, much more of this and you’ll see conservatives driving around with the same damned bumper sticker that the peaceniks came up with: “Bush lied, people died.” What a sad business.
Bush says that it’s not amnesty because they have to pay for it—maybe $1,000, maybe $5,000.
What he forgets to say is that they are excused all their taxes, they are excused their crimes, and the government will predictably come up with the money to pay their amnesty fees for them when the time comes.
Also, they get full social security, medicare, medicaid, etc., without having put anything into it.
