Young Russian nationalist confesses to killing 37

14:40 | 28/ 05/ 2007

MOSCOW, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - A young nationalist suspected of killing an Armenian businessman confessed to killing 37 people together with his friend, a popular Russian daily said Monday.

Vremya Novostei reported that Artur Ryno, a student at an icon painting school, detained in mid-April on suspicion of killing Karen Abramyan, an Armenian, told investigators that he has "since school hated people from the Caucasus who come to Moscow, unite and oppress Russians," and added that he suddenly realized "the city needed to be cleaned."

Ryno said he and his friend Pavel Skachevsky, both aged 18, attacked and killed dark-skinned people in Moscow's suburbs. They did not confess to the Armenian's murder until a videotape from surveillance cameras installed at the building's entrance where Abramyan lived was shown to them.

Prosecutors said Ryno and Skachevsky were detained after an eyewitness called the police and said the two people who stabbed Abramyan 20 times escaped in a streetcar. Police stopped the streetcar and arrested the two students whose clothes and a knife found on them were covered in blood.

A police source said: "At first we doubted whether what Ryno said was true - he mentioned too many details and boasted about what he had done, but at the same time the dates and crime scenes named were not precise. But the investigations we have carried out confirm that everything he says is true." However, Ryno's accomplice, Skachevsky has denied attacking anyone.

Vremya Novostei wrote that the teenagers carried out their first killing August 21, 2006, which coincided with an explosion carried out by skinheads at Moscow's Cherkizovsky market, where many traders from the North Caucasus region, former Central Asian Soviet republics, as well as Vietnam and China worked. The explosion left 11 people dead and at least 49 injured.

Ryno said when they were attacking people, bystanders did not interfere, preferring to leave the crime scene as quickly as possible.

Routine attacks by skinheads and young gangs on foreigners and people with non-Slavic features have been reported across Russia in recent years. But authorities have been generally reluctant to treat the attacks as race-hate crimes, portraying them instead as acts of hooliganism.

The guys a serial killer, and a scum-bag, and should be executed, but how does labeling what he did a race-hate crime change any of that? The penalty for stabbing someone to death should be the same no matter how you label it.

Sounds like Moscow needs some Grossman-style sheepdogs. Or is this a symptom of the repression that breeds apathy? I guess the two aren’t mutually exclusive...

You’re obviously an angry white male who is in dire need of diversity training. Me too. I wonder what enforcing the laws already on the books would do for our problems here in the US?

Thoughtful Memorial Day, everyone.

It is ironic since the original Nazis thought of the Russians as inferior people to be worked to death as slaves. You would think something like that would be discredited for all time but I guess stupid people like the criminals in this story just substitute who is the "master race" and who is "inferior." An "ideology" like that can provide thugs and serial killers with all sorts of rationalizations.

It was noted in the early 1980’s that Russians were beginning to blame their problems on certain despised ethnic minorities within the USSR. Any hatred for the U.S.A. was an acquired taste, and paled in comparison.

In today’s Russia, international communism is being gradually replaced by “National Bolshevism” (as in national socialism). Now, the black hammer and sickle inside a white circle on a red banner is seen as often as the traditional red flag.

Goes? More like GONE. The only difference between the two is the Nazis didn't pretend to return power to the masses anytime soon.

There has always been a strong resentment among ethnic Russians of the various foreigners who are in their midst. Back in the time of the USSR, the Communist leaders claimed to be “international,” and brought in African nationalists to be trained in ideology and trouble making. But Russian youts hated them, and sometimes killed them.

What these “skinheads” don’t realize is that their fellow ethnic Russians are aborting themselves into extinction. Instead of idling on the streets and going around stabbing people who are coming in to fill the vacuum caused by the birth dearth, they might do better to straighten out, go to work, have families, and raise children.

But Putin is doing nothing to move things in that direction. Rather the opposite. As Steyn points out, Russians are committing demographic suicide, and are well on their way to self destruction.

Putin is only good at cynical manipulation of human mind. Instilling family values? Not likely. It does not help that Russians took in a lot of toxic pollutants in their body over many decades. On top of that, there is booze problem.

Yes, Steyn says that the average Russian male dies at age 55. The country is sick, and Putin is leading the country in the wrong direction.

Have you ever noticed that all former Eastern European nations and those of the FSU have experienced this? This form of ultranationalism was unnaturally oppressed by the communists. This was part of the theory of creating a "new man, free from the constraints of the past".

Unlike in Western Europe, countries within the Soviet sphere of power (either as republics or satellites, and, of course, the former Yugoslavia), never had the opportunity to confront and come to terms with nationalist tendencies. Hence, this is, unfortunately, a natural step of development, its manifestations more or less extreme in different countries.

I lived in the USSR in the early 1980's. I never noted this in the press, or among the populace.

There was resentment of "subsidizing" Eastern Europe and even worse, the "lazy Cubans".

Yes, but is that ethnic Russians? The birthrate in France is up, too, but how much of that is owing to Muslims?

I have heard that Muslims are now almost a majority in the Russian military, and that at some point not too long from now they will be a majority.

I was deployed to Uzbekistan 2003-04. Older Uzbeks told me how Russians regarded them and other Central Asians as inferior. I told them my 1985 thesis on ethnic prejudice in the Soviet Army taught me the word `chernozhopii’ (”black asses”, applied to Uzbeks); how tens of thousands of Uzbeks were killed in the 1916 Karshi draft riots (just down the road from the U.S. base, a place I never dreamed I’d see twenty years later). This made me something of a Marco Polo to them.

Amazingly, Uzbeks still regard Russian culture as their window on the west (!).

Meanwhile, let’s not talk about Russian attitudes toward the Jews. The latest outbreaks in Russia against minorities could be based on the fearful violence of the Chechens and their role in the 2004 Beslan horror. I’m not blaming the Russians for anything; as a people they have survived odds that would have most of us Americans shaking in helpless fear.

But I think the phenomenon of Russian neo-fascism needs to be carefully explored. They still have all those rockets.

Good point. Chechens have the highest birth rate, then Tatars, then non Muslim Russians.

However, I think that what is overlooked is that even today, religion is secondary in Russia. Russians will say they are "Orthodox", but this is more an affinity to culture, rather than religion. That may change, but it is the reality today. A Tatar, for example, may be Muslim, but will usually identify strongly with being "Russian".

This is not dissimilar to the past. Ukrainians within the Russian Empire considered themselves citizens of the Russian Empire. And how about the millions of Germans? Or the Scots who landed in Russia after the Battle of Culloden (Russia's most famous poet had a Scots surname). Or the Irish? (where do you think the name "Korbut" comes from?

You are confusing "Russian" with "Soviet".

Molotov, by the way, who negotiated the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, never wanted to negotiate with the Germans; He didn't trust them, and told Stalin so.

"zhopii" is a Polish word.

I need to get the kids to soccer, so I'm off now, but I'll get back to you. The phenomenom you describe is not unique to Russians in the FSU.

My husband, the most anti communist individual you could ever meet, served in the Soviet navy for three years (a draftee, right of high school, like every Soviet male), and was drafted twice to the army as an adult (illegally - the "punishment" for daring to marry a foreigner). He said he never heard this term. Generally, he says, in the army and the navy nationalilty was never an issue because it breaks discipline. He did say that those from Central Russia viewed themselves as the "skeleton" of the army. The worst, he said were from Western Ukraine. This is understandable, given the ferocity with which the Soviets oppressed them, particularly after WWII (fighting in that region continued until the mid 1950's). He also said that any ethnic slur would immediately be reported to the commander of the political department (on every ship, in every unit), and there would be severe repercussions. One his ship, a Russian called a Ukrainian a "f***ing khokhol". He was stripped of a rank after the entire ship was lined up to watch. After a long speech about how all ethnic groups in the Red Army defeated the Nazis. He was also told by the political deputy that the latter would do everything to get the guy kicked off the ship. Which he eventually did. This ruined the guy's life.

I am an ethnic Ukrainian (from the diaspora, with roots in Western Ukraine). My husband travelled throughout the USSR before so called perestroika, including Uzbekistan. He would tell you that the Soviets tried to delete nationalism because "the working class doesn't need a nationality". This was the reason for the attempt to create a homo sovieticus, a new man, whose roots began in 1917. The funniest thing is that now, the most ardent nationalists were the most vehement commies, who would sell their mother for a kopeck.

I don't know if I posted it on this thread or another, but I believe one of the reasons for these strong nationalist views is the attempt to wipe this out and create a "Soviet" culture.

As for anti Semitism, up until the 1960's, almost all the leading posts in the party were held by Jews. When Jews earned the right to emigrate, they did face discrimination.

Uncle Joe was not a Russian. He was a Georgian. Most of the soldiers and nomenclatura in the CP were not ethnic Russian.

THE single largest group of victims of the Soviets were Russians. The authoritative “Black Book of Communism” estimates the total at 80 to 100 million dead, greater than that caused by all other twentieth century tyrannies combined. Most of these victims were Russians.
