Skip to comments.Anger over immigration plan surprises GOP senators

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In his speech Tuesday on immigration reform, President Bush was trying to provide political cover for members of Congress to support the legislation. That could be tough.
Republicans are getting an earful on immigration. "I have learned some new words from some of my constituents," Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Arizona, said.
The angry response comes as a shock. "The level of intensity and volume is, I think, surprising,'' CNN contributor and radio talk show host Bill Bennett said. "We've talked to a number of Republican senators, and they confessed to being surprised by the reaction."
There's a big difference in intensity. Among those who favor a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, 28 percent say the issue is extremely important to them, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll. Those who oppose a path to citizenship feel much more strongly about the issue. Forty-seven percent say it's extremely important.
President Bush said the legislation puts enforcement first. "If you're serious about securing our borders, it makes sense to support legislation that makes enforcement our highest priority," Bush said Tuesday.
Conservative critics responded with a scathing indictment. Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said, "The folks out there in America who, when they see Washington saying we have this wonderful plan, they say 'Yeah right. We saw what you did with Katrina, we saw what you did with corruption, we saw what you have done in terms of managing the war. So when you tell us you fixed immigration, we are not buying.' "
President Bush used equally harsh language to assail his critics. "If you want to kill the bill, if you don't want to do what's right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it. You can use it to frighten people,'' Bush said.

Must be nice. I have yet to hear anything from either of my senators (rino & a democrap), nor do I expect to.
George. You and I have parted ways. You are an office holder, not my moral compass.
I want to kill the bill and have you damn functionaries go back to just enforcing and then funding what is already on the books.
Got it George? You had the choice between statesmanship and pandering and you choose pandering.
Bush’s immigration reform will be viewed the same way as Hillary’s health care reform. It’s going down in flames.
Proves the point that most of these guys live in a bubble. Something in the water up there transforms good people into DC elites.
“You have seriously and deeply misread the American people on this issue, causing us to think that we have perhaps seriously and deeply misread you.”
Not clueless. They know and they know well...they simply CHOOSE to ignore us.
Surprised? They’re surprised that some people (1) actually pay attention when their country is being sold down the river and (2)do not buy a pig-in-a-poke and their empty promises.
Repeal the 17th Amendment! Make these poseurs answerable to their state legislatures.
I do not trust my own government on immigration. 1986 was a hard lesson. Unfortunately, Bush is, yes, I hate to but I’m going to say it...too stupid to learn.
Well Mr President, just where is the enforecement in this bill? It says a fence will be built and security stepped up, subject to availability of funding. C'mon! It's an effing joke, and I can't for the life understand why the President is advocating a piece of legislation which will destroy the GOP as well as have far-reaching negative impacts on the nation as a whole.
Gawd-damn, this is the most desirable nation in the world in which to live, we have the luxury of being able to pick and choose our immigrants, and yet we are acting to legalize millions of day laborers. It defies reason.
Here’s a better title - “GOP Senators Totally Out of Touch, Clueless.”
They are surprised!!!
HEY!!! WAIT TILL NEXT NOVEMBER YOU DUNDERHEADS!!!
Go ahead, pass this [expletive deleted]...Watch what happens...
Should fire every single one of these knuckleheads!
Some of them could use a new hobby, or learn a new word anyway...It’s called “unemployment”...
OK, I’m off the box now...hehehe
(I'd bet he'd be surprised by what passes for "courts" nowadays.)
“President Bush used equally harsh language to assail his critics. “If you want to kill the bill, if you don’t want to do what’s right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it. You can use it to frighten people,’’ Bush said.”
“Do what’s right”
This is a guilt trip. Shame on you, Mr. President. You know your farce of an amnesty is under attack, and this is all you have to defend it. Have you no shame, no honor?
There is no “surprise” over the anger - that’s textbook CYA all the way. They *knew* we would be mad, we’ve been mad every time he’s floated amnesty trial balloons, and had his hat handed to him afterwards.
They knew there was going to be anger. They were spinning this before the full text was even done being written - and that’s all you need to know.
I’m done with our political system. This is a bi-partisan bill, and shows us what both sides stand for. Enough. No more. I will never ever support or contribute to the GOP or Democrats ever again.
Granted, if this passes, I’ll be too busy sending all my money to Washington to pay for this farce, and won’t have any extra for donations anyway.
I think the Boston Harbor could definitely use a few bales of tea...
Legalizing 20 million plus uneducated invaders and bringing in their extended families is a”one little aspect”? Senior Jorge must really think the voting public is a bunch of drooling idiots.
FRiend, the time has come for Constitutionalists to make certain our politicians represent America and not some special interest group that betrays hardworking Americans and *legal* immigrants for the sake of the almighty dollar or some other perk.
Yep, what they’re really ‘surprised’ over is that Americans just won’t roll over and take it like ‘bad tasting medicine’ and go back to sleep like good little sheep.
The Senate looks across the border to Mexico and wants what they see there a political system based on graft and curroption. A system of Lords who rather than elected are chosen by birth out of a ruling class and then forced upon the people in curropt elections. The politicos like what they see mexican politicians who are Royalty and above the common people. That is what they want here thats why they are trying so hard to tunr the USA into mexico.
I’ve had enough of this nonsense. Time to clean house in Washington they all need to go.
Let’s make sure this backstabbing amnesty dies a hard death. Keep it alive and make sure people know how we’re being sold out. If we don’t make a stand NOW, I shudder to think how bad the NEXT fight will be.
Bingo. They simply do not respect conservatives.
I think what irritates me most about the politicians, and the media for that matter, is that when it comes to the war and its handling, they use poll numbers like they are infallible. They use them like they are the Gospel. But when the polls clearly and overwhelmingly go against what the pols and media wants, they don’t even acknowledge them as important.
I truly, truly hate being treated as so stupid that I wouldn’t notice this. It’s like the time I went out to the car to get the remainder of my groceries and came in to find one of my dogs up on top of the table trying to eat what I had already brought in. When I walked in and caught him, he froze. He had this look on his face that said “Maybe if I don’t look over there, and I stay very still, they won’t see me trying to steal this steak.” They are wrong, we know they are wrong, they know we know they are wrong, and yet they keep hoping if they pretend nothing is wrong, no one will really do anything about it.
1986 US Congress gives amnesty to millions of illegal felons, promising Americans that if they go along with this amnesty, the US Government promises to secure our borders.
2007 Americans are being told that if we swallow the new amnesty bill, that gives 12-40 million illegal felons amnesty, then and only then, the borders will be secured! This time the US Government promises all Americans this time!
stay on that box ... we have to ...
Its been made pretty clear that most Americans want border enforcement first...
I never believed the President lied about Iraq.
If he tells me this bill will close our borders . He is lying his ass off.
Pardon the two Border patrol agents and let the others do their job. Maybe then I will make an effort at belief.
Oud Borders are not secure Mr. President ,and this giveaway of America will make them less so.
This is the beginning of the end of the GOP unless the GOP presidential candidates start coming out against Bush just as Gingrich did yesterday.
Proof they all need to get away from the Beltway a bit more often....totally out of touch.
They are looking at it purely from a political perspective. To oppose amnesty will destroy the GOP forever simply becasue they will lose support from the hispanic community and the democrats will gain support. THe GOP senators who support amnesty are worried about re-election. Without pandering to the illegal supporters, they will not get enough votes for re-election. However, with the current outcry, they fear a lot of conservative and traditional GOP voters will stay home like they did in '06. No matter how they vote on anmesty, either decision will fracture the support they need to win. Either they drive hispanics to the dems, or they alienate their base. It's lose-lose for them. In the long run, the GOP will lose more seats because of this, regardless of the outcome.
"He voted against it before he voted for it!" Sorry, color me skeptical! DC where the flip-floppers are alive and well! I don't trust our party's politicians anymore...:( We've been burned too many times!
I now question the President's sanity....and his actual objectives....
I have lost faith in him....he is done and is washing the party into the sewer.....
He signed a bill to build 800 miles of fence 2 years ago. They built two miles partially. Now he wants to sign a bill to REDUCE it to 350. It’s the utter disrespect for our intelligence that makes me mad.
I think that's because revenue bills are supposed to originate in the House (remember a Bob Dole bill?), and the reason Bush & Co. wanted it out is that the Pubbies could use that as a reason to hold it up in the House.
My OWN Senator, Sam Brownback, is being “forced” to “rethink his position” on the immmigration issue....as reported in today’s Kansas City Star.
Columnist Rod Dreher asked an immigration lawyer what he thought of the bill. The reply: "If an ICE agent apprehends aliens.........the agent cannot detain them. Instead, ICE must provide them the opportunity to apply for the Z visa."
Ergo, instead of initiating removal proceedings, ICE will be initiating amnesty applications.
This is the equivalent of turning the Drug Enforcement Agency into a needle distribution network.
I believe they are shocked. They keep making the same obvious mistakes over and over. Why else would they do that? Because they ARE clueless.
Term limits! Otherwise they will burrow in like ticks and spend their lives doing increasing damage, concerned only by their own thirst.
“Hispanics”, illegal ones, anyways, aren’t supposed to vote. There is no reason to pander to them. If they’re worried about ‘em, they need to work on vote fraud, in addition to border enforcement.
Legal “Hispanics” (aka Americans) are mostly in favor of enforcement, like most of us.
What is really happening, is that Americans are being sold out by an elite that is looking to import a new slave class.
I’d vote for clueless (although I have only one vote to spread among the lot of them).
They’re clueless b/c when I dialed my senators’ offices about the 1-800-882-2005 direct Spanish access line, the both of them claimed no knowledge of it. I expressed clearly to both it speaks very poorly of their national security awareness that any foreign entity would have access to the Senate’s communications network without them having knowledge of such.
One aide even had the audacity to tell me the regular lines were so tied up from persons calling in about immigration reform that I’d just have to keep calling until I got through and when I told him I got through TWICE without wait using the access #, he seemed totally dumbfounded, thanked me for my call, and hung up. I wonder where he thought he was while I was speaking to him?
This is a link to sign an online petition to Bush to STFU about this amnesty.
I also sent letters to Hutchison and Cornyn, who along with 21 other Senators voted from jumpstreet to trash the bill.
Yes this whole thing is a smokescreen and the American people know it. We’re wise to this thing and we don’t believe the lies no often how much they repeat it.
That repeating the lie over and over ain’t gonna work this time.
Teddy Kennedy is betraying the Democrats too, by rewarding illegal labor, cheating low-income American families and *legal* immigrants. And that’s not right in anyone’s playbook.
Obviously, they do not deem it to be a mistake. No, they are not truly shocked, that’s a scam.
I should have kept and posted the MANY letters sent to me by Rep. Gonzales, who has consistently written to me of his ‘concern’ for ‘would-be Americans’ fair treatment.
You’d be furious, as I was/am.
