The frail coalition that is shepherding an immigration bill toward final passage in the Senate withstood another attack on its compromise language Wednesday, fighting off a possible poison pill amendment from Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).
The amendment would have restricted the number of illegal immigrants eligible to remain in the country. It was defeated 51-46 when Republican Sens. Larry Craig (Idaho), Pete Domenici (N.M.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Chuck Hagel (Neb.), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Richard Lugar (Ind.), Mel Martinez (Fla.), John McCain (Ariz.), Arlen Specter (Pa.) and George Voinovich (Ohio) voted with the majority of Democrats to defeat the language.
Instead, the Senate passed a similar, narrower amendment that would prevent some criminals, including sex offenders and some gang members, from becoming legal residents.
The odor coming from the Seante is getting stronger.
Hey RNC......not another damn dime!
No mention that the “ineligibles” were felons. Cute.
How about give the dimes to those who are doing the right thing.. it isn't enough to complain to those who are pushing this bill.. we should also reward those who are opposing this or trying to do the right thing, like Cornyn. When the RNC sees where the money is going, it may impact the overall party policy.
Funny, they kept the poison in the bill. Let the felons stay, the Senate affirmed! sheesh.
Yeah, real cure that they didn't mention that it would have "restricted the number" by preventing felons from staying in the country.
So the following senators just voted to allow illegal aliens who have committed felonies from staying in the country for an unlimited length of time: Larry Craig (Idaho) Pete Domenici (N.M.) Lindsey Graham (S.C.) Chuck Hagel (Neb.) Jon Kyl (Ariz.) Richard Lugar (Ind.) Mel Martinez (Fla.) John McCain (Ariz.) Arlen Specter (Pa.) George Voinovich (Ohio)
Dang, just dang!
The are really fighting hard to drag this traitorous legislation over the finish line.
The Senate GOP illegal-lovers should just pack up and move to Mexico City. At least their anti-Americanism will be more welcome there
In fact, the article intentionally gives the impression that the Cornyn amendment wouldn't have prevented *any* criminals from becoming legal.
The real brilliance to what Cornyn was trying to do was that this is tied with a big push to crack down on identity theft.. the fact is that many (if not most) illegals are able to stay in the country because they have committed felonies like identity theft or tax fraud.. The Cornyn amendment would automatically make most ineligible.. Smart move.. to bad the McLame/Hagels of the world have gone off the deep end..
These guys are definitely voting to reinstute a system of slavery and peonage in the United States.
It's pretty obvious that Reconstruction didn't quite do the job. Maybe we should restart it in South Carolina and Arizona ~
At least chambliss and isackson weren’t on the list. I’m sure it must have been my calls everyday. LOL
I will do whatever I can to prevent them from being reelected, regardless who their opponents are.
I detest my remaining RINO senator. However, unless we get someone worth having running against him in the primary, we might have to vote between really bad and even worse like we did when Brown beat Dewine.
“Some criminals”, and “some gang members” won’t be allowed to become citizens. Isn’t that special. They can live here, get a z visa, and be allowed to continue their criminal enterprises unmolested, but we ain’t gonna let ‘em become citizens. Boy, those senators sure are tough bargainers.
Every time one of these illegal aliens commits a violent crime a senator or congressman should be thrown in prison for life, their families thrown out onto the street, and all of their assests seized and given to the victim’s family.
Did they get permission from La Raza to exclude the worst of the worst or are these brave souls just taking a political risk by standing up to them? < / sarcasm >
Amazingly, Lott voted against the Kennedy amendment and for the Cornyn amendment. I predict he will vote for the bill itself though.
Blood on their hands, every one of them.
WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!
Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.
At least my Senators from Georgia did not vote with the RATS
As I sit here at the library computer reading this, a young Hispanic guy is sitting next to me looking at his 18th Street Gang website and blogging. He’s close to me so I can sneak peeks and read what’s on the screen. Lovely.
and evil in their heart. For fear of being suspended, I cannot write what I truly feel about the utter scum, vile, traitorous, anti-American, anti Liberty, contemptuous, deviant, money grubbing, power hungry, elitist, wholly evil trash senators voting for this Destroy America Bill. /rant
The raping of America by the Senate!...thanks alot you bastards!
Just sent my daily note to Colorado’s Allard & Salazar.
So in other words, they want the fact that they are FOR making a lot of felons legal residents, left in the bill?
Smart. Real smart.
There must be an upside here only recognizable to moonbat “minds”.
This is just all becoming too much. I fear for my children and grandson.
These guys need to look to spending more "time with their families," hopefully.
A couple of days ago, near here in Raleigh, during the morning rush hour, a drunk illegal in a stolen Tahoe crossed a median and slammed head-on into two cars, killing a man. Now think about the laundry list of charges he just racked up. Grand theft auto, vehicular homicide, felony DUI, reckless driving, identity theft, giving police a false name...Lord only knows what else they could stick him with.
It sure sounds to me like that man could apply for a Z-1 visa under this bill so he could stay in the country after he serves his time. For that matter, considering how long it’ll probably take to bring him to trial, if this bill passes, he might be able to apply for a Z-1 from jail while awaiting trial. He’s not a sex offender. Apparently he’s not a “certain” gang member. Yeah, there’s the slight matter of him having been deported twice before from Texas several years ago, but hey, that doesn’t count!
Think about it.
Oh, wait, I was wrong! From another thread:
“Kennedys amendment included elements of the Cornyn amendment that barred immigration benefits to members of terrorist-related organizations, known gang members, sex offenders, alien smugglers who use firearms and felony drunk drivers.”
So it’s all good! He killed a man...that’s fine. Stole a SUV? No problemo, senor. But he drove drunk! No visa for you!
I feel like I’m living in Bizarro World some days.
A sure way to damage this country even more. Our biggest danger come from our own elected officials.
Looks like Kyl did not vote with the Dems, and other stupid Rs...
Even after McCain’s disastrous debate last night, mainly due to his stance on illegal immigration, he still votes the wrong way. I would really love to know what he is thinking.
Just look at the Republican jackasses who voted against this reasonable and sane measure
To keep Teddy from being a legal immigrant?
600,000 of them were ordered to get the heck out of here. They lost their deportation proceedings and defied court order to leave America
This is an unmistakable signal that if this amnesty passes there will be no deportation of those illegal aliens who don't sign up for Z Visas or who otherwise screw up and commit crimes once they get Z Visas
It may be necessary to soon shift gears. I am writing a piece on this. I believe this has to be a bi partisan fight againste the amnesty or we lose. The mainstream media is painting those oposing this sham as stricktly from the right. Yet we all know that 68% of americans oppose this according to every poll taken. We desperately need the independents and democrats in this and we need talking points to convince them they need to get involved.
Newbie here (but I’ve been lurking a loooong time!) I tried calling using a WH number from a MinutemanHQ e-mail and got a really RUDE individual who told me the comment line was closed today and no, he couldn’t give the President a message. I told him, “No wonder nothing ever gets done in Washington” and hung up the phone. I will try on the other line tomorrow, but FYI they aren’t taking messages on one of the numbers given by MHQ: 202-456-1414.
Maybe Republican voters are as dumb as Democrat voters after all.
Kyl would have voted liberal if his vote was needed. He was taking a little cover after the outrage against him by a few conservatives in AZ.
“Instead, the Senate passed a similar, narrower amendment that would prevent some criminals, including sex offenders and some gang members,”
*some* criminals?!?!? *some* gang members?!?!?
*some* of them get to stay in the USA and become citizens!?!?
All the Cornyn Amendment did was demand that *no* criminals with records should have the Z visa amnesty. This bill is an utter travesty!
“This is an unmistakable signal that if this amnesty passes there will be no deportation of those illegal aliens who don’t sign up for Z Visas or who otherwise screw up and commit crimes once they get Z Visas”
Absolutely correct point.
And further, it proves how this bill is not about fixing the immigration system, but ensuring it remains broken and thus we have defacto ‘open borders’.
I don’t think ID has voted out an incumbent senator or governor in the Republican primary since 1966. But it is nice to wish they would. ID people like most others just go with the “friendly” incumbent.
“The real brilliance to what Cornyn was trying to do was that this is tied with a big push to crack down on identity theft.. the fact is that many (if not most) illegals are able to stay in the country because they have committed felonies like identity theft or tax fraud.. I wish Cornyn could bring Kyl back from the dark side.
