Fred Thompson Seeks $4.6 Million
NewsMax ^ | June 6, 2007

Supporters of Fred Thompson are seeking to raise $4.6 million to help launch the former senator and "Law & Order” star’s expected run for president in 2008.

A group called the First-Day Founders got the ball rolling when all 100 members each donated the primary maximum of $2,300 on June 1, the day Thompson’s exploratory committee filed with the Tennessee secretary of state, allowing the committee to begin fundraising.

If the First-Day Founders come through with their fundraising efforts, "Thompson presumably would start off with $4.6 million in ‘seed money,’” The Hill newspaper reported.

"Speculation has been rampant as of late that the former senator is all but in the race … and such aggressive fundraising efforts seem to support that notion.”

Some analysts believe that Thompson will not announce his candidacy before the end of the second filing period because he might appear financially weak compared to candidates who have had more time to raise money, according to The Hill.

In addition to the First-Day Founders, several Web sites that were formed to urge a Thompson run have been raising money as well. GrassrootsVoter.com claims it has signed 17,000 volunteers from all 50 states, and www.Fred08.com is also asking for donations.

With the Rats in control of Congress, there needs to be a counterbalance in the White House

It is my hope that there will be conservatives who see the groundswell for Fred Thompson, and who will be willing to contend for the Democrat and even RINO seats in the House and Senate. If Fred is the nominee, and the swell continues for him, he could carry a LOT of Repubs. into Congress on his coat-tails. That would be SCHWEET!

Actually I want someone with the manhood to stand on the stage and answer tough questions.

After he announces, he'll likely be invited to the Repub. debates and you can watch him for yourself. I haven't bothered watching any of the debates; they are artificial, and you never learn anything of substance from them. I get my information by hearing the speeches of the candidates and reading their commentaries, unfiltered by the media, and unconstrained by two minute response times.

Fred Thompson = Lazy? That’s the rep.

Nope, that's the slur his detractors wish folks would BELIEVE about him. According to the folks with whom he works at NBC, and his former Senate staffers, he is NOT lazy.

Hate to rain on that parade there, but Fred was also a prosecutor, Assistant US Atty, in fact (just like Rudy, only not in NY).

Thompson has flip-flopped on McCain-Feingold.

Nope, he didn't agree with all of it to begin with, voting against some parts of it, but there was nothing else at the time that would help attain his goal of getting some of the big, corrupt, or foreign money out of campaigns. He has spoken out against some of the loopholes provided ever since it was passed, and has said, for several years, that it needs to be severely changed, or even scrapped. He didn't just change his mind when he decided to run for President.

I just found this from an older article by John Fund:

“Indeed, it is his need to wake up at 5 a.m. the next morning, so he can tape three Harvey segments before returning to the “Law and Order” set for a long day of shooting, that prompts Mr. Thompson to close out our chat. “With my current schedule I might have more time to myself if I gave all this up and did start a campaign,” he says as he dons a sports coat and heads for his car.”

Yeah, that’s a lazy man, all right.

No crap, Dick Tracy.

My comment was in reference to someone putting "ronaldreagan" as one of the keywords on this thread about Fred Thompson.

Fred Thompson is not Ronald Reagan.

Absolutely correct. However, Thompson has clearly studied Reagan and how Reagan was able to both challenge conventional wisdom and appeal to conservative Democrats. As such, there will be enough similarities in style that the comparisons between the two men are inevitable.

I hope they will soon give an address, and phone number where donations can be made by those who cannot, or prefer not to donate online.

Go to FriendsOfFredThompson.org (unofficial site) and click on the link to in the fundraiser letter -- it will bring up a form to fill out that includes the address. If you postmark it by Monday and date the check June 4, you'll be counted as a "first day" contributor.

From another thread, this comment was made about FDT:

That is why the comparison with Ronald Reagan is so often made. Sure, both were actors and involved in politics, but it is the chords they strike with the electorate that makes them soul brothers.

It’s ridiculous to keep promoting the idea that Fred Thompson is Ronald Reagan, or some political reincarnation of him.

He's the only major candidate since Reagan to openly remind us what federalism is... that's close enough for me.
