6 People Being Treated After Exposure to Substance

Click Here to Listen to our report at 3

Children's Hospital says its emergency room is back open.  Haz mat crews are at the hospital.  A spokeswoman, Jackie Gauger, says a patient came to the hospital today after coming in contact with an unknown substance.

That patient and their mother were both sick.  Four other people at the hospital are now also being treated.

Gauger wasn't sure exactly why Haz Mat teams responded to the hospital.  There were reports that a substance in a backpack is making people sick.

It appears this case is somehow related to Meonomonee Falls High School, but it's not clear yet how.  Calls to the high school were not immedeately returned.

Stay with Newsradio 620 WTMJ for more as we get it.

What are the odds that mama got sick stressing over her child, and the others got sick because they saw two people get sick at the same time?

Kind of like when a bus gets into an accident we have hundreds of people filing claims (even if the bus was empty at the time).

Presser,

Initial spokesbabe sent packing. Senior female and male now answering questions.

Very very guarded language by

Wauwatosa decontaminating people in the ER.

All efforts being made to decontaminate the ER and -other- areas of the hospital.

“Substance” trying to be indentified by Milwaukee Hazmat.

“Potential” for a contaminant.

High School - don’t know what’s going on.

TV has hazmat moving in wearing full moonsuits.

The initial male child patient is from Menomonee Falls.

“If” a contaminant exists all efforts are being made to contain it.

“Staffers” are being quarantined.

“This is an isolated incident. We don’t know what it is. There is no risk to the public.”

At best, does anyone see a complete failure by the hospital and authorities to effectively communicate what the @#@$@%^ is going on?

WTMJ radio reporting the child had symptoms of naseu and shortness of breath while at school. Mom picked up child and she experienced the same symptoms while driving the child to Children’s Hospital in Wauwatosa.

Menomonee Falls is -nowwhere- near Children’s Hospital. Community Memorial in the Falls and would have been the most logical and closest choice.

We’re talking the difference between 5 and 20 minutes to get the child to a hospital.

You are probably talking the difference between an HMO (no out of network) or PPO insurance plan.

UPDATE!

WTMJ 4 TV reporting new developments,

At 2:45 PM CDT a friend of the initial patient went to the Menomonee Falls High School office reporting a severe illness.

Menomonee Falls High School was evacuated of all remaining personnel.

Hazmat response by Menomonee Falls FD.

All HVAC systems shut down at the school.

Attention being focused on the High School locker room.

Many parents now indignant over the lack of information.

No idea yet what “substance” is involved.

“A bag of dirty diapers??”

That stinks. (Especially in Houston, on a June afternoon.)

...the child had symptoms of naseu and shortness of breath while at school...

I've seen that happen before. The cause turned out to be final exams.

They are trained and work very hard to obfuscate the situation, lots of weasel words, and go to great lengths not to say anything though using lots of words.
