Initially I was a little amused, but then I wondered if I would feel the same way if it were the other way around.

The excuse that "It's an Alabama thing you wouldn't understand and we're proud of it" sounds...well, to be blunt, ignorant and childish.

My dad was born and raised in Alabama.. When he was 75 a man called him a liar (a mechanic over a bad repair). The much younger man ended up with a bloody nose and a black eye. Yes, the police were called, but they believed my Dad..

and, yes, I’m quite proud of him...
