NAACP Downsizes After Declining Donations in Wake of Abortion Flip-Flop

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The nation's largest organization representing black Americans is cutting staff and closing down some of its regional locations in the face of declining donations. The moves come on the heels of a flip-flop on abortion and some black leaders saying abortion is distracting from civil rights issues.

The NAACP took an official position in favor of abortion in early 2004, a stance it quietly rescinded months later after significant backlash.

A poll conducted by Black Enterprise Magazine found that 60% of African Americans disapproved of the decision.

Then, last year, the Revs. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Joseph Lowery kicked off a three day event in Dallas and said abortion has been used too much to block discussion of issues like voting rights and affirmative action.

Now, the NAACP is cutting its staff of 119 down to 70 and with close some of the offices around the nation that it operates.

"We are right-sizing our organization to meet present circumstances," interim President and CEO Dennis Hayes told The Baltimore Sun.

NAACP communications director Richard McIntyre told the newspaper that "All our bills are paid, and there's money in the bank" but said the organization has used about $10 million in reserve funds to pay bills and debts because of a downturn in donations.

"It's the same type of situation where if you find yourself going to your savings more than you would like to, you're going to make changes," McIntyre said.

Mychal Massie, chairman of the black conservative group Project 21, told the Cybercast News Service that the NAACP's financial woes are no surprise because it ignores the real plight of black Americans on issues such as abortion.

"[T]hey're not addressing the very real ills in the black community" such as "out-of-control abortion, which amounts to nothing more than black genocide."

In fact, abortion has adversely affected the African-American community and Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., notes that abortion has disproportionately affected black Americans.

While black women constitute about 13% of the childbearing population, they have over one-third of the abortions. The abortion rate of black women is three times higher than that of white women and 60% of African-American women who become pregnant will have an abortion.

More than 14 million abortions have been done on black women and abortion businesses are frequently located in minority communities.

"I join the voices of thousands across America who can no longer sit idly by and allow this horrible spirit of murder to cut down," King says. "If the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is to live, our babies must live."

Meanwhile, polls show black Americans are pro-life and supporting pro-life candidates in greater margins than before.

In an August 2004 survey sponsored by Pace University and Rock the Vote, 54 percent of all Americans declared themselves pro-life while just 44 percent said they supported legal abortion. However, African-American voters took a pro-life position by a larger 59 to 42 percent margin.

Can you say - we have been so far left for so long we can not come back to the middle where the money is.

Bottom line - the NAACP has lost the middle and we must now get Congress to stop giving it our tax dollars.

The NACCP has long since outlived its place in America and needs to be replaced by something else - an empty trash can comes to mind right now.

I don't know what polls are showing but I can tell you that election returns -- the only polls that count -- are definitely NOT showing blacks supporting pro-life candidates!

Not really on topic, but has anyone ever explained why Blacks are apparently okay with having the term “colored” in this organization’s name?

Rich Little once did an impersonation of Lyndon Johnson saying:

"When ah was growin' up, ah was told to call y'all 'colored'.
Then y'all said y'all wanted to be called 'negro'.
Then y'all said y'all wanted to be called 'black'.
Then y'all said y'all wanted to be called 'Afro-American'.
When y'all get together, can you make up yore damn minds and get back to me. Thank yewww."

From the moment the leaders of Civil Rights allowed the movement to be aligned with the Feminists and Gay Rights Movements, everything our forefathers fought, bled, and died for in this country became utterly meaningless.

...I do not recall any time in history of (sheltered and wealthy Liberal) White women or Homosexuals having ever endured the injurious and hostile treatment Blacks suffered at the hands of the Democrat Party sanctioned Ku Klux Klan and monsters like Bull Connor and Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, whom Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a DEMOCRAT the last time I checked, nominated for the Bench back in 1936 or 1937.

...As I told a friend of mine the other day, many Americans in the United States, specifically Blacks, suffer from what I call Historical Amnesia. No thanks in part to the lack of scruples found among our Educrats and their NEA and ATF enablers. So as far as I, a Black Conservative Woman, am concerned, the NAALCP is getting its just desserts.

I remember “Afro-American” in the 1970’s. As George Carlin said, “that lasted about 3 weeks”. LOL

Yes, run that through the “disgronificator” and that’s what you get.

Abortion is destroying the black community, along with all the other liberal social programs. Blacks make up 12% of the population, but they account for 35% of all abortions. The family in the black community is destroyed, as 70-80% of their children are born outside of wedlock. Oftentimes, the breakdown of the family leads the kids to involvement in sleeping with multiple partners, drugs, and other crime. The cycle then starts again with the next generation. Check out this link on crime:

Affirmative action offered to color people simply implies that they aren’t able to stand on their own two feet without the help of whites. That is just not true. Black people are just as capable as you or I.

I think within 20 years, the GOP has a very good chance of changing the black political allegiance from Dem to conservative GOP.

Good luck with that....I’ve been waitin’ a good 20...i guess another 20 won’t matter.

One of my co-workers put a sign on our recycling bins that said “white paper” and “paper of color”.

Many were not amused.

(Two points)
1 LOL!!!
2 Some people go through life being “Not Amused”, and feel that it’s their calling to make sure no one has any fun.

I find that #2 (some are not amused) is more amusing than #1 (the original, original joke).

Indeed.

Abortion and contraception, as pushed by Margret Sangar, was primarily against blacks and other non Northern European peoples.

the organization is out dated. Predates civil rights movement when there were not very many hispanics here. Colored referred to blacks. The entire organization is become a white elephant.

The current crop of leaders are poor leaders, and pick their fights unwisely. They don’t know what to fight for, and can’t fight if they need to. They literally are left pushing to rename a street “MLKing Blvd” as their only real mission.

The NAACP's biggest failing was the failure to realize when they'd won the war. Instead, they have found smaller and smaller, more and more inconsequential "issues" to take up. It's slowly pushing them into irrelevance.

I don't know what polls are showing but I can tell you that election returns -- the only polls that count -- are definitely NOT showing blacks supporting pro-life candidates!

There's a very, very, simple reason why that is so.

Allow me to explain. I was talking to a black co-worker a couple years ago (I'm white.) I knew she was a conservative, but also knew that she voted Democrat. I asked her a series of questions - her opinion on abortion, the death penalty, gay marriage, entitlements, and even affirmative action (though I will admit to phrasing it as whether or not she thought one group of people should get special consideration due to skin color). In each instance, she responded with the appropriate conservative answer - anti-abortion, pro-death penalty, anti-gay marriage, etc.

Then I told her that I had just outlined the Republican Party's position in a nutshell, and that the Democrats generally believed the opposite on each one. Then I asked, in light of the fact that she obviously agreed with the Republicans, why she would vote Democrat. Her answer stunned me.

"Because Republicans don't like black people."

That one, single sentence is why the Dems have 90% of the black vote. They've convinced the African American community that, regardless of what else blacks and Republicans may agree on, that conservatives don't like black people. When we as conservatives change that perception, blacks will flock to the Republican party in droves.

I agree 100%. I think what they're concerned about is that discussing the issue of abortion as blocked their cash inflow. I also have a problem with this: "'out-of-control abortion, which amounts to nothing more than black genocide'..... abortion has disproportionately affected black Americans .... abortion rate of black women is three times higher than that of white women .... 'I join the voices of thousands across America who can no longer sit idly by and allow this horrible spirit of murder.'"
For decades the Stooges and other so-called leaders of our black fellow citizens have fallen in lockstep with the Democratic Party, warts and all, which included a platform of abortion on demand, tagging along like puppies who only want to be fed and petted. Now that abortion has had an extensive impact on "their people," (as far as I'm concerned, all Americans are my people) with the potential for reducing their future voting bloc and weakening their personal power structure, all of sudden it's "murder" and "genocide?" So, killing babies is okay as long as they're not black babies? Frankly, I see no end to racial animosity in this country unless the Stooges are held accountable for the frauds they are and driven into obscurity. They don't want racial harmony; they'd be out of work and they like their high-dollar living. Only when their followers realize that they are being duped into slavery to the federal government by Democratic Party overseers, and refuse to be a political host for these parasites, will individual American citizens be able to develop relationships without regard to racial background tainted with distrust.

Meanwhile, polls show black Americans are pro-life and supporting pro-life candidates in greater margins than before.

At least they're figuring out that the party of slavery is also the party that intends genocide toward them.

And the Dims are trying to bring in all these illegals. A little-known fact is that Hispanics are committing crimes including murder disproportionately against blacks. So this invasion is not in the interest of blacks. And many blacks, like many working-class whites, are finding it harder to get construction and other blue-collar work when competing against illegals.

I know it's whining but "why can't they see it's in their best interests to vote Republican"? Why won't they at least elect more black Republicans?

When we as conservatives change that perception, blacks will flock to the Republican party in droves.

Which is why I hope Fred picks Michael Steele as his runningmate.

Unless black Americans can see with their own eyes and hear with their own ears --- free from the filter of the race-baiting rats and their allies in the msm --- that Conservatives are not monsters, only then can the Republican party even begin to make inroads. Until then, millions upon millions of black Americans who are Christian, and pro-life, and pro-family, and pro-individual freedom, will continue to vote for a political party which is DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED to all those values.

Can we call whites “decolored”?

How about calling African-Americans off color?
