Immigration bill's demise suggests many are OK with status quo
San Francisco Chronicle | June 9, 2007 | Carolyn Lochhead

Posted on 06/09/2007 4:30:11 AM PDT by Baladas

The collapse of the giant immigration overhaul in the Senate might demonstrate that the dreaded status quo -- 12 million people living in the country illegally and more arriving each day -- is not really so dreadful after all.

The multitude of interests involved in the immigration debate -- business groups, ethnic lobbies, politicians in both parties and the American public -- in the end proved unwilling to yield enough to support the bipartisan compromise.

As California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat who helped negotiate the failed deal, said, the current immigrant situation in the United States is a de facto amnesty. Even the most ardent advocates of a border crackdown concede that it will be impossible to apprehend and deport 12 million people living here illegally.

But as much as everyone complains about the situation, the enormous black market in labor operating openly in the United States serves the interests of many involved, however imperfectly. It is an amnesty without amnesty.

[snip]

The Senate might yet resurrect the bill. Feinstein and other supporters vowed Friday to press forward. President Bush is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Republican senators at the Capitol.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened to attach the immigration overhaul to bills naming a post office if it comes to that. "We are not giving up; we are not giving in," said Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, the top Democratic sponsor.

So now they're trying to claim NOT granting amnesty is granting amnesty.

Graham actually said that?

Is that what it really means, Carolyn. Is that what it really means inside your your teeny, tiny, brain-damaged head?

In other words, a country is being invaded. The leadership comes up with a plan that totally ignores the invasion and promises to do something completely unrelated to stopping the invasion.

In response to that stupid plan, the people say, "your plan stinks".

Therefore, according to the brilliant reasoning of Carolyn, the people don't mind being invaded at all!

Wow. Someone give Carolyn a Big Huge Brain Award. She can put it up there on the mantle with all her other cool trophies.

Yep. They simply refuse to enforce the laws on the books so as to claim we can do nothing about it and getting amnesty written into law. Their argument is like saying that if we don't catch every murderer, rapist or child molester, we should stop enforcing those laws. No one makes such a ridiculous argument in those kinds of cases. But we're supposed to be convinced that because we haven't enforced our immigration laws, that we should us give up. Our elite would like to give up and they're annoyed we want to keep America alive.

No it doesn't Carolyn! Anything but!

I does however STRONGLY indicate that the VAST majority of the American people can recognize a BAD deal - one which would make things WORSE rather than better - when they see one!

We also do not want a 108-page bill passed that nobody knows what's in!

"Immigration bill's demise suggests many are OK with status quo..."

Yeah, about 13-million of them, and they all speak Spanish.

That headline is about the most ridiculous "leap of faith" assumption I have heard yet from the MSM. We all know that most people get their newspaper "news" from headlines and photo/captions.

It's like claiming "Not all Americans play the Lotto, so those Americans obviously prefer being poor".

Absolutely. All we want is that this administration and state and local authorities ENFORCE THE LAW. Of course, the real sticking point is that there is no $$ to be made in enforcing immigration law, unlike speed laws, etc.

Lets see how much of the fence is built which they are mandated to do. F*** Washington DC. They are traitors if they won’t build more of the fence to at least show some good faith.

If the double layer fence is built and we start deporting those 600,000 who have defied deportation orders, then I’m willing to think about some kind of amnesty but never citizenship. But the simple fact is the rats in DC have so much contempt for Americans they won’t even take thee two steps.

One more time for Carolyn. Just to help her understand.

You have a leak in a pipe in an upstairs bathroom.

A plumber comes and offers to punch a hole in a pipe in your basement, so that less water will get up to the bathroom to leak.

You say: “stupid idea!”

Your husband says: “Carolyn, that means you LIKE the leak in your bathroom!”

Now, Carolyn, can you see where the husband might be not be using the brains that god gave a gnat?

Can you apply this reasoning to the larger picture? Can you try to measure up to gnat-brain-power? (It’s not hard. Just try.)

Because believe you me, the other side is not giving up.
My co-worker listens to the dang spanish radio and they were on there yesterday coaching people to call in.

In fact, I don't think most people realize how much advocacy goes on to help the illegals. There are people on that station pretty much every day teaching them how to work the system. And, several of them are obviously not native spanish-speakers.

reporters stupid?

Most of them anyway....but this article does make a good point.

We've got millions NOW pouring across our border, the are illegally voting, driving, and sucking down social services. They are NOW taking jobs that Americans WILL fill. They are depressing wages of other Americans by taking jobs at 2 to 4 dollars an hour. They are committing crimes, clogging our jails, and jamming our emergency rooms.

That's what we've got NOW.

And no one's doing anything about it, and everyone's happy as a lark about that, apparently.

So, for the dems and the rino's this past week was a win/win. They either got a bill that gave them more of what they like, or they got the status quo which they like.

Conservatives on the other hand are back-slappin' and high fivin' after getting diddly squat.

They hate the current situation (Plan A) and they rightfully hated the McCain/Kennedy Illegal Amnesty Bill (Plan B), and now they're left with Plan A and not a single solitary gleam of light at the end of the tunnel. What they've got is about 40 or 50 senators willing to look good with conservatives by keeping Plan A...and grinning all the while with their fingers crossed behind their backs.

In short, they've got nothing. The reality of our system is that forty or fifty senators can't pass nothing; and, if these clowns had to, they wouldn't.

Conservatives did not "win" this past week.

I like that analogy. :)

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that this amnesty plan would only reduce illegal immigration by 25%. In light of that, how can Blockhead expect anyone to take her statement seriously? She's saying we want the status quo. Good grief! This amnesty plan guarantees it!

According to the Talking Heads, the WHY
you ask about is based on BIG MONEY being
made on the backs of immigrant workers.
But there’s a lot more to it.
a. The HIRERS are leary of the citizenship
grant because that means the laborers would
start chiming in with the UNIONS (pay raises!)
as the NEW flock of immigrants under the WORK
PROGRAM arrive each year.
b. The UNIONS are eager to revive their
power as a political entity through added
millions to their rolls. Added bodies mean
added VOTES dictated by the Union! They long
for the good old days even as their former
members are dying off of old age and retirement.
c. Illegals have become comfortable in their
status and by the buck they wield at Walmart
and fast food businesses. They’re living
better than they did 10 years ago and STILL
manage to send megabucks back to Mexico.
Divide that huge loss of US revenue by the
estimated number of illegals in this country
and you reealize the number of illegals is a
helluva lot MORE than the 12-15 million stated
by the Congress. Another one of the MANY dirty
little secrets we’re not supposed to know about.
d. If the GOP does NOT stand up against this
movement to socialize America, as a party it
will be defunct. The Democrats have only
this issue to stand on and convince citizens
the Old USA way of life is better gone by the
wayside of other governments. They view the
methods used by Europe as the right one, viz.
allow aliens carte blanche to western civiliza-
tion as a means of convincing them to JOIN
the free world socially, economically, and
ethically. (AIN’T gonna work!)
