GOP: Churchill harms higher-education funds

Lawmakers cite embattled prof as example of poor accountability.

Leading Republican lawmakers Tuesday said taxpayers will likely be leery of approving tax increases to fund higher education, partly because of the Ward Churchill debacle playing out at the state's flagship university.

Senate Republicans say that if there are any pitches for higher taxes, they would likely fall on deaf ears until school leaders can demonstrate greater accountability with the money they already have.

Sen. Andy McElhany, R-Colorado Springs, said the Churchill dismissal case is eroding the public's confidence in higher education. He expressed frustration that the tenured professor has not yet been fired and instead remains on paid suspension.

"Years into this controversy, his lawyer still has the system tied up in knots," McElhany said. "The public must be wondering just what it takes to fire somebody in higher education."

Churchill invented facts, plagiarized entire works and misrepresented the authorship of articles.

"If the regents suspend him, we will go to court," Lane said. "If the regents fire him, we will go to court. Short of a written apology by the regents, we will go to court."

Good news.

Maybe Churchill will force the college to lay off large numbers of leftwing profs like him.

The parents and alumni could change this in a few months if they really stopped sending their children and donations.

I know alumni who have stopped sending money and even wrote a letter to CU explaining why.

It is good to make the left feel the heat of enabling Ward and this left wing agenda.

Years ago, some Freepers funded a billboard in SW Oregon just off I5 north of Medford blaming the enviral whackos for the terrible fire season Oregon and N Cal had that summer.

Alumni at CU should do something similiar around the university re no more money/donations as long as the criminal Churchill is a professor.

Billboards with that message would have local, state and national impact on the left wingers in charge of the university.

Ward lawyered up and has support of fellow alleged professors :

The conclusion one must draw from such examples isn’t that every institution has its bad apples but rather that, at least in the liberal arts in America, moral turpitude and political hucksterism pervades higher education.

Radical criminals with questionable academic credentials flourish in a milieu that bristles with hostility toward real scholars who don’t toe the party line—witness the case of former Harvard President Lawrence Summers.

Individuals with prison records or FBI rap sheets don’t get into major educational institutions because they fudge their resumes.

They get in because they share the political dogmas of those who hire them—and they flourish for the same reason.

Both the alumni cutting off funds and the billboards would be a good idea to shake up the powers that be at CU. The people have to get their attention and hitting them in the pocketbook and bringing out the inept way this is being handled would be effective, IMO.

As for Rubin and Overaker, it wouldn’t surprise me if Churchill was hiding them out. I’ll bet they both appeal to him physically and psychologically. lol

Thanks for the ping, George.

...but other than that, what has he really done to warrant his firing? /sarc

The Lawmakers are correct.

The only way to deal with the travesty of what is deemed "higher" education is to cut off the pursestrings.

I would go further.

I would call for the privatization of all higher education.

That was a GREAT billboard, and it was very effective.
It drove home the point very well, and many, many folks saw it.

The idea has merit but it seems Colorado has more problems now than ever before. Judging from what I read and hear about what Hickenlooper wants to do in Denver, and Ritter statewide, we are in for a huge battle with the left.

This is not about one issue or another. The whole political philosophy of left versus right is emerging. To be honest, I welcome it. It’s about time Democrats explain just what they want to do and then let voters decide.

Ward Churchill is the cancer, spawned from the sickness. The real problem is liberal socialism associated with Democrats. This isn’t going to change until conservative Republicans replace liberal Democrats. We need to remind ourselves how serious this all is and starting fighting Democrats the same way we would fight communists or despots in rogue regimes around the world.

I hold my nose to vote for a RINO, but I’ll take that small victory over a Democrat. In the meantime I will actively support CONSERVATIVE Republicans.

(Sorry for the vent.)

Thanks for the vent. My turn ?

We are in for a rough time ahead; maybe a decade or two ?

I was hoping that leaders like Hank Brown would be more active. With all the illegal immigrants and newbie liberals voting the wrong way, the statewide dynamics have changed for the worse.

We will never return to the good old days. Taxes and spending will go way up. The freezing of TABOR mils for school property taxes without voter approval is just the beginning.

There will be a constant stream of expensive new studies ( like a train study to run in the shoulder next to I-70 ) and crazy tax schemes like Hick just tried. Some of these will eventually pass.

Public access to public lands will really decrease. Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, ranching, grazing, farming, mining, logging... will be limited to the elites with deep pockets. The middle class will finally be run off.

Health care will be ‘free.’ Many small businesses will close their doors. Customers will only have limited and expensive choices. The commercial tax rates are massive already...wait until they double again.

Thanks.
