This really irritates me.

It costs less than .50 cents to verify a Social Security Number provided by any job applicant. It takes less than thirty seconds to do so via any of over 700 employment screening companies nationally.

This ‘we can’t hold employers responsible for hiring them unknowningly’ stuff is pure unadulterated horse hockey.

My company is one of those with the capability to do this, btw. I know what I’m talking about here.

And I strongly suspect the spokesperson’s for the administration know it as well.

You are so correct. My wife checked applicants via online services all the time. It ain’t that hard to do.

And I will say again to the Bush administration, demonstrate you are enforcing the law now and for a substantial period of time before coming back with your proposal.

Trust must be earned. You haven’t earned it.

100% agree with you. As President of a company with 375 employees, I know WE have the capability to verify and comply with the law in this respect. If we can do it, so can the construction contractors, hoteliers and meat packers. THEY JUST DON’T WANT TO.

Kudos

Give me someone’s phone number and I can tell you within 20 minutes what kind of car they drive, their criminal background, where they work, if they are married, how many times and to whom, and a butt load of other info and it won’t cost me a dime. Any citizen can do it. You can find it out if you want to. These employers don’t WANT to. It’s all a load of crap and the administration is protecting them. Let’s just call it what it is.

I agree completely. Further to your point, ignorance of the law isn’t an exculpable consideration.

If an employer, “in good faith”, accidentally hires an illegal, it should only be due to the fact that he’s hired an identity thief, and not because they didn’t know to run the check.

And I strongly suspect the spokesperson’s for the administration know it as well. You can bet your arse that they do. The Administration's lackeys are hoping you and I aren't smart enough to know the difference.

Can you explain for those of us who have never verified a SSN of a job applicant, what it takes to do so?

OK, but explain why is it my (being an employer myself) responsibility to detect illegal aliens?

Is it also my job to detect spies? Is it also my job to detect drug traffickers? Child Molesters? Jaywalkers? Traffic Violators? Drunk Drivers? Moonshiners? Enemies of the State? Little Green Men from outer space?

Now if a guy who wants his lawn mowed hires someone to do it and later we find out the person who mowed his lawn is an illegal does he get fined?

Anyone see a problem here?

How about instead we have the Law enforcement officials gather up the bad guys and let the rest of us concentrate on doing our chosen lines of work. I didn't get into business to do the government's work for them but as time passes even supposed conservatives and limited government types see no problem with burdening private business with more and more hoops to jump through.

And then everyone wonders why all these factories head to other countries. Gee maybe they are tired of crap like this.

Add to that the fact that most Employers do a background/criminal check, plus a credit check. So there are multiple levels before hiring that a fake or stolen SSN become quite obvious. The bigger the Corporation, the bigger that lie becomes. Blackbird.

To: Badeye; All

I work for an assisted living facility. Our license REQUIRES US TO DO THE FOLLOWING: drug screen; fingerprint with a subsequent DOJ report on those fingerprints.

And .. this costs us $25 for the physical and drug screen, plus $86 for the fingerprints. We charge the employee for the fingerprints, but after 90 days, we reimburse them.

If any red flag comes up - WE CANNOT HIRE THE EMPLOYEE. And .. we do have red flags and we DO NOT hire those people.

MY QUESTION: WHY IS THIS PRACTICE NOT A STANDARD EMPLOYMENT PRACTICE ..??

ANSWER: Cheap wages and probably no benefits.

While the press tries to imply these employees keep consumer prices down .. but the PRICE TO THE TAXPAYER KEEPS GOING UP IN REGARD TO WELFARE, FOOD STAMPS, FREE MEDICAL, TAX BREAKS, etc., from our taxes - which always seem to be going up.

What these cheaper wages also mean is MORE PROFIT TO THE BUSINESS OWNER. I’m all for a business making a profit .. but not at the expense of the sovereignty of America.
