Posted on 06/14/2007 1:10:36 PM PDT by Baladas
Details of the immigration compromise remain to be finalized, but top Democratic sources say Reid has closely monitored the behind-the-scenes dickering over policy changes and a finite list of amendments due for consideration. Based on the latest updates on the policy and amendments, Reid will approve the compromise and move late Thursday to put the bill back on the calendar for Senate consideration in the middle of next week.
"He's going to bless it and he's going to get the Senate back in the business of dealing with immigration," said a source in the Democratic Senate leadership.
The principal change to the bipartisan immigration compromise that Reid shelved last week is the addition of $4.4 billion in added border security spending. That money will be added to the base bill to return to the floor. Any other changes to the immigration bill will have to be made through the amendment process.
The base immigration bill seeks to tighten border security, put an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants on a path to permanent residency and create a temporary worker program.
Republican leaders have promised to produce enough votes to curtail debate on the bill and proceed to final passage. Last week's impasse arose after Reid twice failed to collect the 60 votes necessary to limit debate and move toward final passage.
With the GOP votes in hand and a finite list of amendments to be offered by 11 Democratic and 11 Republican senators, Democratic sources said Reid is now determined to see whether the legislation can survive the amendment process intact. If it does, the Senate could vote on final passage of the bill by next Friday, Democratic sources said.

Amazingly, Reid undercuts Bush every chance he gets, except for this amnesty.
This thing must die. Please call your Senators!
If they thought all hell broke loose before, they ain't seen nothing yet.
Well that's it then. The divorce is final.
Well, no not quite yet. The bill hasn't been signed and until it is I'm putting all my energy into defeating it. The divorce papers won't be signed until the President signs the bill.
Welcome to your global dictatorship.......
Of the people, by the people, for the people... my arse.
They think they can give amnesty to 20 million for a promise of 4 billion dollars in border funds?
Whisky Tango Foxtrot?!?
And the Repubs are assuring enough votes for it to get past cloture?
Whisky Tango Foxtrot?!?
Man, oh, man, oh, man. I want to go to a demonstration or a rally or something.
“Reid and Bush are trying to bore us to death so they can pass this.”
They’re hoping to slip it in under the radar screen... Reid shelved it, and the media proclaimed it “dead” specificially in the hopes we would forget about it.
Quite the contrary, if there is a compromise in the works, we now have to fight harder than ever.
HELLO INFIDELS!!!! >>>>>IMMIGRATION BILL<<<<<< >>>PING<<<
“The principal change to the bipartisan immigration compromise that Reid shelved last week is the addition of $4.4 billion in added border security spending.”
If Chambliss, Isakson, and Kyl think this inclusion will salve the critics - as I think they think - they are very, very wrong. Just because they read the NYTimes which echos their thinking doesn’t make it reality.
Either a new Republican party (actually an old party...the party of Reagan, PLUS some Democrats...minus the OPPORTUNISTS and the LIARS)...will emerge...or a new Conservative party will be born.
At some point this country will have a new third party to contend with...the Latino Nationalist / Socialist Party...(or something like that)
Wont all these bipartisan ‘strategerists’ be surprised....
Recently large demonstrations have taken place
across the country protesting the fact that Congress
is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
Certain people are angry that
the US might protect its own
borders; might make it harder
to sneak into this country and,
once here, to stay indefinitely.
Let me see if I correctly understand
the thinking behind these protests.
Lets say I break into your house.
Lets say that when you discover
me in your house, you insist that I leave.
But I say, Ive made all
the beds and washed the
dishes and did the laundry
and swept the floors. Ive
done all the things you dont
like to do. Im hard-working
and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters:
You are Required to let me stay in your house
You are Required to add me to your familys insurance plan
You are Required to Educate my kids
You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family
(my husband will do all of your yard work because
he is also hard-working and honest, except for that
breaking in part).
If you try to call the police or force me out,
I will call my friends who will picket your
house carrying signs that proclaim my
RIGHT to be there.
Its only fair, after all, because you have
a nicer house than I do, and Im just
trying to better myself. Im a hard-working
and honest, person, except for well,
you know, I did break into your house
And what a deal it is for me!!!
I live in your house, contributing only a
fraction of the cost of my keep, and
there is nothing you can do about it
without being accused of cold,
uncaring, selfish, prejudice!, and bigoted behavior.
Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn
MY LANGUAGE! so you can communicate with me.
And dont forget to make sure your forms are in MY language - I need to understand them...
