WASHINGTON At a gathering of Hispanic Christian and community leaders on Friday, President Bush pushed for support for an immigration bill that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants, highlighting the compassion behind the bill.
Hispanic men and women were praised by Bush for making the United States more vibrant in fields ranging from art to business to religion, and for helping to change America for the better.
The president gave as example success stories of immigrants in the White House and government. He pointed to Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) who is originally from the communist island of Cuba but is now a member of the United States Senate. He also spoke about a Hispanic American coast guard he recently met who graduated at the top of his class who shared in his speech about his migrant grandfather.
Isnt it a fabulous country where a migrant grandfather can come and have a dream and work hard, and theres his grandson talking about the promise of America in front of the president of the Untied States and his classmates, Bush said. Thats the beauty of America.
However, Bush did not neglect to mention the countrys responsibility to enforce the border, create a lawful way for foreign workers to fill vacant jobs, and resolve the status of illegal immigrants in the country without amnesty and without animosity.

A POS for helping the poor? What would you have said about Jesus Christ?
Jesus Christ would have exhorted them to go, and sin no more, AngieGOP.
My compassion meter hit empty today and I BURNED my Bush-Cheney 04’ yard sign. Do I need carbon credits for that?
Plastic burns hot and dirty .
The poor isn’t who he is helping. He is turning his back on we the people and his plan will cost taxpayers trillions of dollars and maybe bankrupt the country, as well as destroy the Republican party.
Yes, for what he is doing he is a POS
Doing the ‘right thing’ is a Christian directive for INDIVIDUALS to pursue.
Helping the sick with other people’s money is Christian? This lie has to be put to rest. Extortion from one to give to another is not Christian.
I wonder if he’ll show as much compassion to me when I kick down the door of my neighbors house, walk in and start making a sandwich.
It is one thing to praise another people's culture. I have no problem with that. But the comparison, here, implies that America needed to change--or was improved by the change--and that is not acceptable.
I have no problem with mutual respect. Indeed, that was once a cornerstone of our foreign policy. I have a great problem with the idea of changing America "for the better," by making her more like other lands. The President of the United States should be about preserving, not changing the heritage of America.
Some of these concepts are discussed in my letter, this morning to Senator Lindsey Graham: Letter To Lindsey Graham.
CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!
WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!
Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.
This is not the issue.
Taking from one, to provide "charity" for another, while refusing to recognize that the beneficiaries of such "charity" continue to live in sin, no less. This sort of nonsense is what you'd expect of Jim Wallis and the Sojourners, socialist wolves in sheep's clothing.
and Mr. president...we can point to all the illegals who are not here to do good. That’s a silly argument and you know it Mr. president.
He’s just robbing Peter to pay Paul...sorry I’m mad as h^ll and won’t take it anymore. The US Treasury bought with sweat and blood is not to be given away for political purposes.
Hell, yeah. “Angie” should go down to Mexico and do some missionary work since she wants to “help”. Now THAT would be Christian.
Bush needs to start drinking again.
But forcing others to do so through taxation is not. Each Christian is free to decide how best for them to serve Christ. It is not Christian to force others to pay for your definition of Christianity - it is tyranny, all wrapped up in a flag of charity.
